Sport Sections NBA Scores NHL Playoffs ... ESPNdeportes Wednesday, February 14 Torre wonders about Knoblauch Associated Press Chuck Knoblauch 's arm. "I think Knoblauch, to me, is the first curiosity," Torre said on Wednesday as the three-time World Series champions opened spring training. "I know he's gone through a tough time. He's No. 1 in my mind," Torre said. "It is just he means so much to this team, and we're much a better team with him here. All he has to do is be himself. He doesn't have to show anything magical." Knoblauch made 15 errors in the first half of the 2000 season, many on throws, and missed much of the second half because of elbow pain. Not trusting the arm of the former Gold Glove second baseman, Torre didn't use Knoblauch in the field during the postseason. "Hopefully, I can try to get back to the player I've been," said Knoblauch, who has been working out for a month at the Yankees minor league complex. "My goal this year is just to get back to playing good baseball."

Second Chance
by Chuck Knoblauch with Jeff Bradley
Standing in leftfield in a game for the first time this spring was like sitting at one end of a basketball court watching plays develop at the other. It's such a different perspective after so many years playing second. I found myself admiring just how easy major leaguers can make the game look. It was fun watching a guy like Luis Sojo , who's out there smiling and pickin' it, throwing the ball across the infield from all angles, over the top, sidearm. He's got such great hands and confidence, he makes playing the infield look like a day at the amusement park. That's something I hope I can do again, to play with that kind of easy, loose confidence. There's this feeling that's hard to describe. You practice to prepare yourself for a game, to condition yourself so your instincts will take over. You're not thinking about what you do if the ball's hit to you. You just react and make the play. That's a feeling every player works for. I'm sure it will happen for me again. I just don't know when. I really think, deep down inside of me, something is going on. Something, somewhere along the line in my life, has affected me, and I don't know what it is. It's frustrating and it's puzzling. I don't ask, "Why me?" because I'm a firm believer that everything in life happens for a reason. But I just have this feeling that, whenever this thing stops, I'll know it without even picking up a baseball and throwing it. When I get to the root of this problem, I'll know I'm better without even walking on a baseball field.

Second Wind Having grown increasingly miserable with the Twins, Chuck Knoblauch joins the Yankees with the hope that he's finally lost that losing feeling
More Flashbacks
by Franz Lidz Issue date: March 9, 1998 Frustration had turned Chuck into a zombie." Lisa Knoblauch is describing her husband's Season of the Living Dead with the 1997 Minnesota Twins. As defeat followed defeat with numbing regularity, the All-Star second baseman was overcome by a melancholy he could never quite shake. After each home loss, he would shuffle through the living room, slump onto the sofa, bury his face in his hands and then stare. And stare. And stare. "Sometimes Chuck would sit in silence for hours," says Lisa. "He was sad, desolate, miserable. He felt stuck in a five-year contract with a team that was sure to get worse. Requesting a trade seemed the only way out."
After Lisa encouraged Chuck to ask for a trade, he began to relax and, says Lisa, "He had hope again."

WHAT'S NEW Very little. The Royals kept very quiet in the offseason. Their only real move was signing Chuck Knoblauch INFIELD Mike Sweeney is a tremendous hitter and is a free agent after this season. He's hit over .300 each of the past three seasons, averaging 27 home runs and 115 RBI. Count on a big year. The team hopes second baseman Carlos Febles will bounce back. He hit 10 home runs and stole 20 bases in '99, but he's had 10 homers and 22 bases in the last two seasons combined. Febles has potential but is a fantasy risk. Third baseman Joe Randa is a mediocre fantasy hitter. He can drive in some runs and hit for average, but he won't hit more than 10-15 home runs. For his career, Randa's average Triple Crown performance is .286-12-86. When he was playing in Coors Field, shortstop

Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.
