The Bobby Jones File Jones’ Stats (from MajorLeagueBaseball.com) Until 18-May-1997, there had only been three former Rutherford Little League players to play in Major League Baseball. Their number increased by one that afternoon. Bobby Jones , who played for Park Exxon from 1982 through 1984, made his major league debut that Sunday. Jones, a left-handed pitcher, made his inaugural big-league start for the Colorado Rockies at Shea Stadium against the New York Mets, the team Jones rooted for during his Little League days. He came away with no decision in a 5 1/3-inning appearance in a game the Mets won in the 8th inning. A large contingent of Rutherford fans made the short drive to Flushing Meadow Park (Queens, N.Y.) for the afternoon game, even as his old Little League continued its regular schedule. Five days later, Jones made his first appearance at Coors Field, the Rockies’ home. This time, he came away with his first major-league victory, going 6 2/3 innings as the Rockies defeated the Houston Astros, 8-7. After two more starts in 1997, Jones returned to Colorado Springs for additional seasoning. He made the Rockies’ roster again at the start of the 1998 season, working out of manager Don Baylor’s bullpen, and he raised eyebrows with 6 1/3 innings of one-hit ball in two appearances against the Atlanta Braves in April. On 24-May, he returned as a starter and hurled seven innings, allowing one run on just two hits, in a 3-1 victory over Cincinnati.

New York picked up Steve Reed and Triple-A righthander Jason Middlebrook for Bobby M. Jones and minor leaguers Jason Bay and Josh Reynolds. The sidewinding Reed, a 36-year-old righthander, signed with the Padres for one year and $500,000 as a free agent during the offseason. San Diego picked up Alan Embree on the same terms, and parlayed him into two pitching prospects in a June 23 trade with Boston. In 40 games with San Diego, Reed has gone 2-4 with a 1.98 ERA (the lowest of his 12-season major league career) and a 36-10 strikeout-walk ratio in 41 innings. His out pitch is a sweeping slider, and he also uses a mid-80s fastball and a changeup. He owns a career 40-30, 3.57 record with 18 saves in 647 games.

Last fall, before he began shooting the seventy-million-dollar big-screen version of Steven Pressfield's mythical golf novel, The Legend of Bagger Vance: A Novel of Golf and the Game of Life , Redford learned that his lead dream hunk, Matt Damon, didn't actually play golf. Now, perhaps with a different golf movie or different director, this minor detail would be taken care of with hokey editing and a Damon double. Maybe Stuart Appleby? But Redford, who plays a decent round of golf and looked pretty natural in The Natural , knew that no one in the golf world would take Bagger Vance seriously (it opens in early November) if his stars had golf swings like Charles Barkley on skates. And if you haven't read Pressfield's book, we're not talking about just any epiphanous tale of golf redemption.
