W E L C O M E Welcome to the Shoeless Joe Jackson Virtual Hall of Fame , the Official web site of the Shoeless Joe Jackson Society. This site is devoted to the memory of Shoeless Joe Jackson and the movement to persuade Major League Baseball to remove Joe Jackson from their ineligible list, thereby making him eligible for election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. All that we ask is that you visit our site with an open mind. We have many facts and statistics about Joe within the Virtual Hall . We don't even ask that you take our word for what is within our site, but that you get interested enough in Joe Jackson to go and do the research.........to get the answer for yourself. We feel sure that you will come to the same conclusion we did many years ago. That conclusion is, Joe played his best in the World Series of 1919, he fielded to win, he batted to win, he ran the bases to win. His worst sin....... he had guilty knowledge of the fix, certainly not an offense worthy of banishment past life.

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a baseball camp that included Ted Williams. When the subject of Joe came up, Ted expressed his views that he was one of the greatest players of all time. Joe was admired by Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth who modeled his swing after Joe's. Ted said that Joe was banned for life by Judge Landis and his life is over, so give the man his due place in baseball history. He said this view is held by many hall of fame players and that he and others are pushing to have Joe inducted into the HOF. Thanks for stopping by.

SHOELESS JOE
JACKSON THE QUEST TO GET
SHOELESS JOE JACKSON
INTO THE HALL OF FAME Shoeless Joe Jackson There is no more tragic a figure in the history of baseball than Shoeless Joe Jackson. To understand his dilemma, first we must take a look at . . . The Black Sox Scandal of 1919. In 1919 the Chicago White Sox were the hottest thing in baseball. They won the American League pennant that year with a 88-52 record and were 5-1 favorites to beat the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series. But even before the Series began there were rumors swirling about that a "fix" was on. And when Cincinnati took the best of nine series - 5 games to 3, it didn't sit well with a lot of baseball fans. One year later a Chicago Grand Jury blew the whole thing wide open naming eight Chicago players as having conspired with gamblers to throw the series. As it turned out, Chicago's poorly paid players (Owner Charles Commiskey was one of the stingiest men in baseball) were easy pickings for the gamblers who had offered the eight teammates $100,000 (but were actually only paid $10,000) to loose the series. The most famous of these alleged conspirators was outfielder "Shoeless Joe" Jackson, an illiterate farm boy from South Carolina, whose lifetime batting average of .356 and outstanding running and fielding abilities would have eventually put him in the Hall of Fame, if it hadn't been for this tragedy.

Alternative history by its very nature is completely speculative. But since others have estimated Jackson's career batting totals had he not been banned, I thought it might be interesting to take a closer look. Although Jackson was already 31 by 1920, that year saw the beginning of the lively ball era and the rise of batting averages throughout baseball. Thus, it is not obvious how his lifetime batting average of .356 would have been affected had he remained active. Joe Jackson was born in 1889 according to Total Baseball. I found eight other players born between 1888 and 1890 who had at least 1200 at bats and a .300 average through 1920. Two, Benny Kauff, who himself was banned, and Vin Campbell, a Federal Leaguer who was unable to get back into the majors after the FL folded, never played after 1920. The remaining six are listed below: Batting Averages through 1920 LastName FirstName YoB AB H AVG JACOBSON BABY DOLL McINNIS STUFFY RICE SAM SPEAKER TRIS VEACH BOBBY WHEAT ZACK

http://www.baseballstuff.com/btf/scholars/visiting/articles/jjackson.htm
The Greatest Player not in the Hall of Fame
by Ed Nixon
The following article was published in the Jan/Feb 1996 issue of THE VINTAGE AND CLASSIC BASEBALL COLLECTOR and appears courtesy of Ed Nixon. In the long history of major league baseball, few men have inspired more controversy than Joseph Jefferson Jackson, otherwise known as "Shoeless Joe". Jackson was caught up in the middle of baseball's most infamous scandal, the 1919 World Series, or, as history recalls it, the "Black Sox" scandal. For seventy-six years, people in and out of baseball circles, have argued his guilt or innocence in the throwing of World Series games for money supplied by gamblers. As Jackson pointed out, he did his best to win, and his series record obviously bears out his claim: He batted .375, had 13 hits, (one of which was taken away by one of the scorers), threw out five baserunners, fielded 1000%, and, handled thirty chances in the OF with no errors. Such a performance tells this writer that Jackson did better than any player in that series. In Jay Bennett's fine article in the AMERICAN STATISTICIAN: "DID SHOELESS JOE JACKSON THROW THE 1919 WORLD SERIES, Nov. 1993), Mr. Bennett proves that Joe Jackson contributed more towards winning than most players on both teams. Mr. Bennett maintains that Joe Jackson played to his full potential in the 1919 World Series, and, further, as a batter, contributed more towards winning than any player on both teams.
