Player From The Rangers' Past
This Week - Charlie Hough It's hard to mention any player from the Rangers past and not think of Charlie Hough. Hough pitched for the Rangers for 11 seasons (1980-1990). He never put up Cy Young numbers, but he was a consistent winner who reached double-figures in victories nine consecutive season. Not only was Hough one of the most likeable players in franchise history, he was also one of the most unique. Hough started with the Dodgers in 1970 and was originally signed as a third baseman. He learned to throw the knuckle ball from Los Angeles scout Goldie Hold, with help from Hoyt Wilhelm, Jim Brewer and Tommy Lasorda. While Hough was with the Dodgers, he was used almost strictly as a middle-innings reliever. He only started one game from 1970 to 1978. The Rangers purchased Charlie's contract from the Dodgers during the 1980 season. In 1982, the club decided to move Hough into the starting rotation, and they were very surprised by the results. Hough won 16 games that year and began a streak of seven consecutive seasons leading the club in wins. In fact, the knuckleballer led Texas in complete games and innings pitched each year from 1982 to 1987. During this same time period, Hough won a higher percentage of his club's victories than any other major league hurler. When Hough finally left the franchise in 1990, he had rewritten the Rangers record book. He became the all time leader in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts, games pitched, losses, and walks. In 1995, The Sporting News named Hough the greatest pitcher in Ranger history. Hough finished his career with the Marlins, and it is only appropriate that he go down in Marlin history as well. Hough was one of the first two free agents signed by the Marlins and won the first game in Marlins history against the Dodgers on April 5, 1993.

National League 2 The Americans threw a Rocket at the Nationals Roger Clemens. With help from Ted Higuera, Charlie Hough, Dave Righetti and Don Aase, he shut down the National League. The AL added power, too. In the second, Lou Whitaker followed a Dave Winfield double with a homer off Dwight Gooden. In the seventh, Frank Brown popped the another off Mike Scott. The NL made it interesting in the bottom of the eighth by roughing up Hough for two runs. In the ninth, the NL had runners at first and third with one out when Aase got Brown to hit a check-swing grounder for a double play. So there seem to be two issues here: 1) what type of pitchers tend to have more errors committed behind them, and 2) what pitchers seem to let up once those errors have been made. To start with the first one, I looked at the play-by-play data from 1980 to 1997 and determined the fielding percentages when each pitcher was on the mound. The Quality Start is a Useful Statistic
By David W. Smith
Spring, 1992 First, let's address the initial question: what is the ERA of pitchers in their quality starts? Table 1 is a summary of the results from all games from 1984-1991, 16831 games total, of which about 52% were quality starts. The information in this table is divided two ways. First, each league is presented individually, and second, the games are separated by quality starts and non-quality starts. Table 1. Summary of Quality Start data from 1984-1991 %QS Starts W L Pct IP ERA IP/Start AL QS 49.3 8935 6184 2749 .692 67370.1 1.93 7.54 AL NQS 9195 2878 6313 .313 44578.1 7.65 4.85 NL QS 54.9 8522 5590 2927 .656 62767.1 1.89 7.37 NL NQS 7010 2170 4833 .309 33171.2 7.28 4.73 ML QS 51.9 17457 11774 5676 .674 130137.2 1.91 7.45 ML NQS 16205 5048 11146 .311 77750.0 7.50 4.80 Totals 33662 16822 16822 .500 207887.2 4.00 6.18 Note 1: The 33662 Starts came in 16831 games, of which 9 were ties. Note 2: There were 989 quality starts in which the pitcher had exactly six innings pitched and allowed 3 earned runs, for a "Klein percentage" of 5.7%. There are three main points to make from this table.
