Equally important to those diamond denizens will be the guy in the mask behind the plate. For the 1995-96 season, that person again will be A.J. Hinch, who spurned pro offers from the Minnesota Twins this weekdeciding instead to return to Stanford for his senior year. "It was a difficult decision, because I've wanted to play pro baseball all my life," Hinch said Wednesday from Millington, Tenn., were he is training with the USA Baseball National Team. "But, for myself, getting my degree (on time) and having a chance to play in the Olympics simply outweigh pro baseball at this moment. "How many guys in a lifetime get a chance to play on the U.S. National Team four years and play in the Olympics, and perhaps win a gold medal? It was too much to pass up." Hinch told Stanford head coach Mark Marquess of his decision Monday.

Then again, Stanford catcher A.J. Hinch is a rare kind of individualsort of like former Cardinal Ed Sprague. It was Sprague, who in 1988, won his own version of baseball's Triple Crown. First he led Stanford to a second straight NCAA title. Next he won a gold medal at the Seoul Olympics, then signed a pro contract with the Toronto Blue Jays and capped his made-for-TV movie year by winning a World Series championship ring. "I think he's got the best of everything," Hinch said. "In baseball, what more can you have? And all in one year." It's the kind of year Hinch hopes to have in 1996. "Maybe we can make it into some sort of Stanford tradition," said Hinch, who has become good friends with Sprague. In fact, the two had dinner together at a national baseball convention in '95 and Sprague provided some insight on how Hinch can get through his busy year. "He kind of put it in perspective," Hinch explained. "He said it's one of those things you just have to take it as it comes. You can't plan for it.
