http://z.lee28.tripod.com/sbnsarchives/id88.html
Home simplybaseballnotebook's archives Meet the Real Rickey Henderson Twelveth in the 'COVER STORY' series. Meet the REAL Rickey Henderson Perception is reality, or so the cliche goes. The perception of Rickey Henderson has too often been that he is arrogant and selfish; he cares more about Rickey than about the team. The reality, however, couldn't be more different.
Simply put, Rickey Henderson is one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He owns the all time records for stolen bases, runs, and walks - all set while he was compiling over 3,000 hits. Henderson has spent the last 24 years doing the little things - the dirty work - all in the name of winnning. Forget everything you've heard about Rickey Henderson; most of it simply isn't true.
Now with Boston, his eighth team, the proud Henderson has had to adjust to a part-time role. "I don't think I'll ever be comfortable (with playing part time), but I know how to deal with it," he explained. "This isn't exactly what I want to do, because I've been an everyday player all of my days. I want to just continue playing a lot, instead of (part time)."
When he looks back at all he's accomplished, the all time record for runs scored is what Henderson takes the most pride in. "I think the runs scored record is going to be the most important to me," the ten time All Star said. "I been known for stealing bases, but I think the runs scored record is the most important. It is a sign of what baseball is all about."

Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.

Perhaps that's because he hasn't really contributed very much in the past couple of seasons, because he spent his best years toiling in the obscurity of Montreal, or because he's spent the majority of his career in the shadow of another similar player. I'm speaking about Tim Raines, of course, who decided to call it quits last week once it was clear he wasn't going to have an Opening Day roster spot with the Yankees. Rather than toil in the minors or try to catch on with another team, Raines walked away on his own terms, having done what he set out to do in the first place prove that he could come back and play baseball after battling lupus last year. While Rickey Henderson was the marquee lead-off man and basestealer in the American League in the 1980s, Raines was doing the same things in the National League. Both players debuted at age 20, just a year apart (Raines in 1980, Henderson in 1979), so it's easy to compare numbers without worrying about era differences. That's "era," not "ERA" as far as I know, neither Raines or Henderson ever pitched in the majors.

I've sat around and told the story of how me and Rick met so many times, it's even beginning to bore me Rickey Henderson's specialty was crossing home plate, so it's fitting that he now owns a gold-plated version. Spring training, '79, I think, and we were sitting in the half-sun/half-shade of the ballpark in Tempe, sitting on pine planks in the dugout and spitting sunflower seed hulls at big blue-green irridescent horseflies. Rook Mariners' pitcher from the Dominican with a jheri-curl was throwing mid-90s gas warming up, and that WHOP! in the catcher's glove was carrying in the dry desert air, and was impressing the hell out of me. Not Rick, though. Rick just knew he was an all-timer. "Hey, Ray, I'mo take him four hundid and fiddy foot," Rick said. "It's Ralph." "Hunh? 'Scuse me." He went to the on-deck circle and started to swing an iron hammer. Sure, rook, I thought. Meaning myself, I suppose.

Rickey Henderson
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Rickey Henley Henderson December 25 -) is a professional baseball player. Many include him among the greatest players of all time. Henderson, was born in Chicago , but grew up in the city of Oakland, California and became friends with Oakland A's owner Charles O. Finley as a boy. Henderson, blessed with speed and explosiveness, was eventually drafted by Oakland in the Major League Baseball draft and worked his way through the minor leagues in just three seasons. He made his big league debut with Oakland on June 24 Henderson batted .274 with 33 stolen bases in little more than half a season and was a strong Rookie of the Year candidate in 1979. He burst into stardom in , when he became one of the few players to ever steal 100 bases in a season, and was an MVP candidate a year later, when he hit .319, fourth in the American League, and again led the league in steals with 56.

The Great Debate, Revisited
by Eddie Epstein
We will undoubtedly take some heat for excluding the 1989-1991 Athletics from the book, so we offer this article, written when those same Athletics were in the book ... Cecil Fielder returned from Japan before the 1990 season and proceeded to become the first major leaguer since 1977 to hit 50 or more home runs. Fielder’s saga is, in itself, an interesting story, but it’s a story for another time. Despite leading the league in home runs and RBI, Fielder was not named AL MVP, finishing a close second to Rickey Henderson. An indignant Fielder went public with his unhappiness about not winning the award (and his unhappiness grew in 1991, when he again led the AL in RBI, and again finished second in the MVP voting), but did he have a case? The BBWAA – they’re the ones who vote for MVP and Cy Young awards – typically overrate RBI, and too often the MVP is simply the player with the most RBI on a first-place team. Of course, by now we’ve convinced you that that the two most important "traditional" statistics are on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Fielder did lead the league in slugging percentage (.592), while Henderson finished first in OBP (.439). Do you know who was second in the league in slugging percentage? Rickey Henderson!
