Career Batting Record The left-handed Gwynn, who won four NL batting titles during the 1980s, is best known as a hitter, but he's also a dangerous base stealer and an excellent defensive outfielder who has won five Gold Glove Awards. He joined the NL's San Diego Padres in 1982 season but was on the disabled list for the last month and he also missed the beginning of the 1983 season. In 1984, he stayed healthy and led the league with 213 hits and a .351 batting average. Gwynn led the league in runs with 107 and hits with 211 in 1986. He then won three straight batting titles, hitting .370 in 1987, .313 in 1988, and .336 in 1989. Gwynn won four batting titles in a row, from 1994 through 1997, tying Honus Wagner's National League record of 8. He also led the league in hits seven times. His .394 average in 1994 was the highest in the National League since Bill Terry's .401 in 1930, and it was the best in the majors since Ted Williams' .406 average in 1941. Bothered by knee, hip, and back problems during the last several years of his career, Gwynn announced at the 2001 All-Star Game that he would retire when the season ended. He hit .300 or better in 18 consecutive seasons, a league record.

Audio Associate's All-Star Installation Tony Gwynn Stadium became the new home of the San Diego State University baseball program during the 1997 season. Groundbreaking for the project took place on August 21, 1996. The structure is named in honor of the former Aztec and current Padre 13 time All-Star right fielder, Tony Gwynn. The 38 year old, future Hall-of-Famer, who has hit a remarkable .368 over the last five years, entered the 1998 season with a lifetime batting average of .340, tying him for 15th place on the all-time list with George Sisler and Lou Gehrig. Also, at the start of the 1998 season, the eight-time batting champion was only 220 hits away from the prestigious 3,000-hit plateau - a level only 21 players have attained. Equally impressive are the stats of the stadium that bares his name. The $4 million facility was made possible through the generosity of San Diego Padres owner John Moores and his wife, Becky, who donated the funds to make the dream of a state-of-the-art stadium for SDSU Aztec Coach, Jim Dietz, a reality. The design consultant firm of Helmuth, Obata and Kassbaum, Inc., has been involved in numerous baseball facility projects including Coors Field in Denver, Camden Yards in Baltimore and Jacob's Field in Cleveland, in addition to several minor league parks including the San Diego Padres spring training facility in Peoria, Arizona.

The three-game series marks the first time the two schools have met since 1985 and the first three-game series since 1972 (Feb. 25-26). Since ASU started varsity baseball in 1959, the Devils hold a combined 12-6 record in the all-time series. The weekend series also marks the collegiate head coaching debut for future Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. ASU is coming off a six-game series sweep of the Hawai'i-Hilo Vulcans last weekend as they were the first team in college baseball to take the field. The Devils outscored UHH 85-15 in the six games, averaging 14 runs, 16 hits and six extra base hits per game.

Included among the Hall of Fame's collection of bats are those from the 3,000th career hit of all-time baseball greats such as Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, and Carl Yastrzemski. Now the Collections staff prepares to add Tony Gwynn's bat to this prestigious collection.

Painting the knob of the bat
    Allowing the paint on
the knob of the bat to dry
    Writing the accession number
on the knob of the bat The first step in accessioning Gwynn's bat is to label the artifact with a unique accession number. Rather than affixing the accession number directly on the bat, the number will be written on a protective coating of white acrylic paint. The acrylic paint is generally applied to the knob of the bat. Note that there is already some writing on the knob of the bat: the bat's number, its weight and length, and the player's uniform number (Gwynn wears #19). These markings are used by ballplayers and clubs to help quickly and easily identify a player's bat. Special care is taken so as not to obscure these original markings, as they are considered an integral part of the artifact. After the acrylic paint has dried, the bat's accession number is written on the white background using black printer's ink. This ink is long-lasting and archivally safe.

The cleats worn by Tony Gwynn when
he collected his 3,000th career hit Monday, August 16, 1999 — Tony Gwynn's cleats are accessioned next. The accession number is written on an acid-free paper label and attached to the shoe with string. The cleats are considered one artifact and so they are issued a single accession number. However, since there are two separate parts to the artifact (a left shoe and a right shoe), each is given its own accession label: label "a" and label "b." After each cleat is labeled, information regarding the cleats is entered on the accession form. For instance, Tony Gwynn wrote the number "3000" on the tongue of each his cleats in recognition of his historic accomplishment. This is noted on the accession form. Tony Gwynn's size 11 cleats have the rather cryptic phrase "5.5 Hole" embroidered on the extended shoe tongue. The meaning of the phrase is revealed when one considers that many of Tony Gwynn's base hits go directly in between the third baseman and the shortstop. When scoring a ballgame, the third baseman is denoted with the number "5" and the shortstop is denoted with a "6." Thus, the "hole" halfway between the two positions is 5½, or 5.5.

Taking notes on the accession form As part of the accessioning process, each artifact is photographed. Larger versions of the accession number labels are placed in front of the artifacts to allow for easy identification. These photographs serve as a useful record of the artifacts, allowing the curatorial staff to quickly view an object without having to physically access it, thus eliminating unnecessary handling. The photograph also proves useful as a record of the artifact's condition upon accessioning.
