Mike Morgan, the Nexus of the Baseball Universe?

by Jonathan Daly for the Visitor's Dugout A few years ago, some college students in Pennsylvania invented a popular game about the actor Kevin Bacon.  The object of the game was to start with an actor or actress and connect them with Bacon in the fewest links possible.  People are linked if they appeared in the same movie.  A “Bacon Number” was assigned to the actor based on the fewest links necessary to connect them with Kevin Bacon.  For instance, Telly Savalas was in “Kelly’s Heroes” with Donald Sutherland.  Sutherland appeared in “Animal House” (and “JFK”) with Bacon.  Therefore Sutherland has a Bacon Number of 1 and Savalas has a Bacon Number of 2. This isn’t an entirely new concept.  Since the 1960s, sociologists have suggested that every person is connected to every other person through an average of six acquaintances.  Paul Erdos, a prolific Hungarian mathematician, invented the Erdos Number.  Every academic who collaborated on a paper with Erdos was assigned an Erdos Number of 1.  Every co-author of these collaborators has an Erdos Number of 2.  And so on, and so on.  The Erdos Number became the forerunner of the Bacon Number. What does this have to do with baseball?  You can connect players to each other by linking them with players who appeared on the same team in the same year.  I’m not counting managers and coaches.   (This eliminates Don Zimmer as a link between everyone from Jackie Robinson to Randy Choate.)  Let’s link Roger Maris to Mark McGwire.  Maris played on the Cardinals along with Mike Torrez.  Torrez was on the ’77 Yanks with Reggie Jackson.  Mr. October finished his career as McGwire's teammate on the A’s.  How about Lou Gerhig to Cal Ripken?  You can link Gerhig to Tommy Heinrich, Heinrich to Yogi Berra, Berra to Tug McGraw, McGraw to Jeff Stone, and Stone to Ripken.  (Thanks to T. Scott Brandon for that one.)

The AL scored five runs in the first three innings - two on back-to-back homers by Bo Jackson of the Royals and Wade Boggs of the Red Sox - before being shut down the rest of the way on three hits. It proved enough for a 5-3 win in Anaheim. Jackson added a rally-killing catch to his home run, and won MVP honors. It was the first back-to-back win by the AL in 31 years.

77. The Encyclopedia Of Minor League Baseball / A Library Of Book Reviews
it took several years for this practice to be accepted by the baseball establishment. Therewas a brief spurt in 1986 (.539) as mike greenwell, Sam Horn, Todd
http://webpages.charter.net/joekuras/encminor.htm
The Encyclopedia of Minor League Baseball, Second Edition
Second Edition
Lloyd Johnson and Miles Wolff, Editors
Baseball America Inc., 1997
An even better version of a great book. In the year-by-year standings, the editors have filled in more detail from the early years managers, team nicknames, attendance, and team affiliation. (In the material that follows, players on the various teams are taken from lists of league leaders and league all-stars. The overall won-lost records were compiled by me, so blame me for any mistakes.) I decided to use this book to investigate a favorite topic: Ed Kenney vs. Baseball America. Several years ago (1989) Red Sox farm director Ed Kenney Sr. told us that whether or not the minor league teams posted winning records was irrelevant to the Red Sox. All that mattered was whether players were produced for the parent club. Mr. Kenney scoffed at Baseball America's annual award for overall winning percentage by a farm system. He believed that some teams stocked their teams with players who could win games at the minor league level but would never advance. The Red Sox only selected players who had a chance to make the majors. Their talent might be more raw in the minors, but they learned to overcome adversity and were better players in the long run. Needless to say, Dan Duquette holds the opposite viewpoint, and since taking over the Red Sox in 1994 he has striven to build winning teams at all levels of the Red Sox farm system. The Baseball America school of thought holds that players should get in the habit of winning as soon as possible. The Milwaukee Brewers and Montreal Expos, Duquette's previous teams, were frequent winners of the award for best winning percentage by a farm system.
