‘The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg’: the makings of an American Jewish hero
September 27, 2000
by by Michael Gildener-Leapman
director aviva kempner’s latest film The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg explores the life of an American hero during the 1930s and 40s. The film probes Greenberg’s impact as a baseball player, American citizen and Jewish icon during the earlier part of this century and the legacy he left for his fans. The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg is the inspiring account of a lanky Jewish boy’s meteoric rise from Brooklyn to the ranks of baseball’s elite, challenging Babe Ruth’s homerun record while at the same time facing anti-Semitism on and off the field. The film serves as a refreshing tribute to a severely waning American dream through the story of one man’s rise to the rank of “not biblical, but baseball Moses.” Local producer/director Aviva Kempner’s tribute is a nostalgic documentary about an extraordinary baseball player who overcame perhaps the most insurmountable obstacles to rise to become an icon of perseverance. Detroit Tiger’s Hammerin’ Hank’s accomplishments during baseball’s heyday measured up against those of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig and permanently etched his name among baseball’s greatest.

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF HANK GREENBERG 1998 - USA Director Aviva Kempner
Documentary - Reviewed by Frankie Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron. These players are thought of most often when people look at prominent baseball figures from the 1930s and 1940s. However, another great slugger of the time often gets overlooked. Hank Greenberg, the first Jewish baseball player to not change his name to a Christian one usually gets forgotten. Those who remember him are most likely baseball buffs, or former residents of the Detroit area. Director Aviva Kempner wanted to change that. After Greenberg's death in 1986, Kempner began a 12-year struggle to fund, film, and spread awareness of Greenberg by making this film. Her hard work is evident. The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg is a wonderful documentary. It's just long enough to keep it from getting boring, it has a good amount of humor, and the interviews and cross-references are mini-marvels. Hank Greenberg first stepped to the plate in 1934 when he got signed to the Detroit Tigers. Throughout the season, especially when the pennant race heated up, he was the constant target of anti-Semitic remarks from people in the crowd. Baseball was America's game, and some believed Jews shouldn't be allowed to play it. Greenberg gained popularity by often hitting one or two home runs a game, and leading his team to the pennant. For so many people though, he was much more than a baseball player. He was a Jewish icon, a symbol of hope, a voice speaking to all Jews in America that said they could be just as successful as the "true" Americans. In one interview a fan describes his school days when they used to listen to baseball games on the radio during class. Whenever Greenberg came up to the plate all the other kids would look at him, perhaps thinking he knew whether he would hit a home run or not. Indeed the player was a sense of pride for people he hadn't even met.

It should be required reading for every Tiger fan and baseball fans in general. In addition to providing a look at the life of Hank Greenberg, along the way it chronicles the great Tiger teams of the thirties and forties. However this is more than just a baseball book. Hank discusses his career as a ballplayer/GM/Owner, the challenges of being the first Jewish superstar baseball player, and his decision to give four and a half years of his career to the military. Hank dictated the bulk of this book while sitting by his pool in his final years. Ira Berkow took the tapes, wove in some interviews with friends/family/teammates, and added some old newspaper accounts to create this wonderful book.

Near the end of Aviva Kempner's documentary, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg , the 1930's Detroit Tigers slugger talks about his possible influence on kids. "If I set a good example for them," he says in modest, shrugging tones, "maybe it will in some way affect their lives." The rest of the documentary is dramatic evidence how much the 6'4," 220 pound Greenberg affected the lives of kids, particularly Jewish kids, as fans ranging from Rabbis (Max Ticktin) to actors (Walter Matthau) to U.S. Senators (Carl Levin) weigh in. Lawyer Alan Dershowitz is typical in his enthusiasm. "He defied every single stereotype," Dershowitz says. " He was They . He was what they all said we could never be. He defied Hitler's stereotype. And for that reason I think he may have been the single most important Jew to live in the 1930s." The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg (2000)

More Articles Home Celebrating Hank Greenberg by Harvey Frommer - Four times he led the American League in home run hitting. In 1938, he blasted 58 - no player had hit more in a season up to that point in time except for Babe Ruth. He starred in the majors for more than a decade and batted .313 for his career. He missed four and a half years to serve in WWII. He closed out his career in 1947 as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He blasted 25 home runs that season, most of them into a section of the outfield known as "Greenberg Gardens." In 1956, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He passed away 30 years later. His name was Henry Benjamin Greenberg, but he was better known as Hank Greenberg. "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg," a documentary film by Aviva Kempner is a loving and beautifully done tribute to a great player and goes into an in depth treatment about all he had to overcome to prevail. The film opens with Mandy Patinkin singing a Yiddish rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" while street scenes of young boys playing baseball in the Bronx in the 1930s enter the screen. The son of Romanian immigrants, Greenberg grew up Jewish in the Bronx and went on to star at James Monroe High School.

    Synopsis:
Portrait of baseball's first Jewish star. Bronx-born Hank Greenberg's achievements during the "Golden Age of Baseball" in the 1930s and '40s rivaled those of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. He also helped break down the barriers of discrimination in American sports and society. Greenberg was a beacon of hope to millions of American Jews who faced bigotry during the Depression and WWII. Tall (6'4"), handsome and uncommonly good-natured, Greenberg became "the baseball Moses," an icon for everyone from Walter Matthau to Alan Dershowitz.

  • "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg" The great ballplayer was one of the "chosen people" in more ways than one but hero worship can have its drawbacks. By King Kaufman I never really had a hero as a kid, but I did have a favorite ballplayer, Willie Davis. He was the first player I could recognize, and as the most exciting player on the succession of mediocre Dodger teams that greeted me as I came into baseball consciousness in late-'60s Los Angeles, he was naturally someone I cheered for and liked. But I didn't idolize him. To this day I couldn't tell you his hometown or much of anything else about him without looking it up. When I was 10, Davis was traded to Montreal. Suddenly he was an aging journeyman, bouncing from team to team. Montreal, Texas, St. Louis, San Diego, Japan.

When It Was a Game - Triple Play Collection Babe Ruth - The Life Behind the Legend Customer Reviews Average Rating: Rating: Hank Greenberg the Jewish Babe Ruth/Moses/Jackie Robinson If the point of "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg" is lost on the viewer, then history itself put the writing on the wall when the owner of the Detroit Tigers misunderstood the meaning of an old photograph of Greenberg and traded his star to the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 1947 season. Greenberg's last season in the baseball was Jackie Robinson's first, and Greenberg was in the National League to witness it first hand. Not surprisingly, Greenberg was one of the few opposing ball players to offer Robinson encouragement in breaking baseball's color line. But then, as this 1999 documentary proved repeatedly, no white player in the history of the game had been subjected to the abuse Greenberg suffered because his was Jewish. Without a doubt Robinson suffered more, maybe even more that first season than Greenberg his entire career. But this documentary also shows that Greenberg was as important to the American Jewish community as Jackie was to African Americans.

    The Life and Times of
Hank Greenberg by Adam J. Hakari
When Hank Greenberg, the famous Jewish baseball player who stood at an enormous 6'4", enlisted in the Army, his drill sergeant let out a string of anti-Semitic insults, citing that he didn't want any "Cohens or Goldbergs" in his platoon. Hank, a man proud of his heritage, spoke up and said that his last name was Greenberg. The sergeant looked at the tall, muscular man in front of him before replying, "I didn't say anything about Greenbergs." The whole of The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg Aviva Kempner's The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg feels a bit amateur at times, but its subject is one that other documentary filmmakers have inexplicably passed on for years. Hank Greenberg was a terrific ballplayer and a man who helped those like Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron break through the sport's racial barriers. He may be gone (Greenberg passed away in 1986, at the age of 75), but as "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" is sung in Yiddish over the beginning and closing credits, Kempner invites the viewers of this tribute to Greenberg to reflect upon the story they just heard and ponder how many people like him exist today.
