Yankee skipper to be honored by AMIT
New York, April 15, 2002 - Joe Torre, manager of the New York Yankees, will receive the first annual Hank Greenberg Award, to be given by AMIT, at a special program on Wednesday, May 1, from noon to 1:30 p.m., at the Roosevelt Hotel, Madison Avenue at 45th Street, in the heart of New York City.
This very special event had originally been scheduled to take place on September 11.
The Hank Greenberg Award will be presented by Hank's son, Steve. WNBC Sports Anchor Len Berman will serve as master of ceremonies.
The Hank Greenberg Award will be given annually to an outstanding baseball figure who has set the highest standards of achievement and good sportsmanship. Joe Torre, who was the unanimous choice of the selection committee, knew Hank Greenberg and held him in the highest regard. When he heard that Joe Torre will be honored with this award, Steve Greenberg was "ecstatic," saying, "Joe Torre embodies a lot of the qualities of my father."
Joe Torre and Hank Greenberg were both New Yorkers who went on to stellar major league baseball careers. "Hammerin'" Hank Greenberg, one of baseball's all-time great players, was the first Jewish player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was a two-time American League MVP, three-time Major League home run leader, and four-time American League RBI leader who led the Detroit Tigers to four pennants and two World Series titles, in 1935 and 1945. In 1938, Hank Greenberg came within two home runs of Babe Ruth's 60-home-run record, and is considered by many baseball historians to be third among big league sluggers, behind Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.

by Mark Cohen
"What you're doing is so important," New York Yankees manager Joe Torre told his AMIT audience, as he received the first ever Hank Greenberg Award before several hundred admirers at the Roosevelt Hotel in midtown Manhattan on May 1, 2002.
At the special award program, hosted by NBC Sports Anchor Len Berman, whose grandmother was a founding member of AMIT, Joe Torre acknowledged AMIT's great work in building the Harvey Goodstein Sports Complex for children-at-risk in Israel. "Raising money to build a sports complex that will affect a lot of kids' lives is so important," the Yankee skipper said. "The children are what it's all about."
"I met Hank Greenberg once," Mr. Torre said, "but you only had to meet him once to understand his dignity and class. I will always remember this day and this award," he concluded, "not just the physical award, but what it stands for."
Originally scheduled for September 11, the award program brought back vivid memories. "It's an eerie feeling," Mr. Torre noted. "I was getting ready to be picked up, and my car service called and said it was all cancelled. They said, 'Turn on the TV,' and there was the horror of watching the World Trade Center. So this is a special day for more than one reason.

the Public Affairs and Record Home Page Current News News Archive Video Briefs Video Forums ... Home Page Life and Career of Hank Greenberg Celebrated in Kraft Center Film Presentation By Bernard Goldstein "Hammerin' Hank" Greenberg in 1946, his first full season back after returning from World War II. The Tigers' star led the American League that year with 44 home runs and 127 RBIs, proving he hadn't lost his edge. As Hank Greenberg walked to the plate during the 1935 World Series, a chorus of taunts could be heard from the opposing dugout and the crowd. The jeering grew louder and hate filled words rained down on him as he stepped in to take the first pitch. This was not something new for the Detriot Tigers' star player who endured anti-semitic slurs at almost every ballpark he played in. Finally the umpire stepped in and stopped the game until the taunting subsided. Such scenes resonate throughout Avivia Kemper's award winning documentary "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg," which tells the story of the first prominent Jewish baseball player. The film was screened on Nov. 8 at the Kraft Family Center for Jewish Life and featured an introduction by the late Hank Greenbeg's son, Steven, and Provost Jonathan Cole. Cole, a former Columbia baseball player, called Greenberg a "legendary player." "I am a great baseball fan. As a child I memorized every baseball statistic, and for many reasons really admired Jackie Robinson," Cole said, "Greenberg really helped to set the stage for (Robinson's) breaking the color barrier. His legacy goes beyond baseball."

Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.

Famous Jewish GI's: Hank Greenberg Hank Greenberg was not only a Hall of Fame baseball player, he was also a Jewish GI Henry "Hank" Greenberg was born on January 1, 1911, in New York. His parents were both Jewish immigrants from Romania. Hank first played Major League baseball in 1930, and then again from 1933-1941. During World War II, Hank enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He attained the rank of Captain and served mostly in the Pacific Theater. Greenberg lost 4 baseball seasons due to the war. After the war, Hank returned to baseball from 1945-1947. During his baseball career, Hank played for the Detroit Tigers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He even came close to shattering Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a single season, in 1938. Legend has it that the opposing pitchers wouldn't pitch to Greenberg near the end of the season, when he came close to shattering the record. They didn't want a Jew of all players to have the home run record. After Greenberg's career as a ball player ended, he became general manager of the Cleveland Indians. In 1956, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame Hank died at his home in California on September 9, 1986.

The Charge "I never saw Hank Greenberg play, but he was a legendary ballplayer, especially in Jewish households like mine." (New York sports columnist Ira Berkow) Opening Statement As we enjoy this year's edition of the Fall Classic, it seems like a good time to step back and experience a little of what baseball meant to America prior to the middle of the past century. A recent documentary on Hank Greenberg, baseball's first Jewish star player, offers an excellent opportunity to do so. The film in question The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg was written, produced, and directed by Aviva Kempner. Fox Home Video has now released a very fine DVD version containing an enriching collection of supplements. Facts of the Case Hank Greenberg's baseball career is presented chronologically, on a season by season basis, utilizing a mix of archival footage and interviews with Greenberg himself and others. The Evidence The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg is a loving portrait of one of the stars of the 1930s and 40s, prepared with attention to detail and obvious enjoyment by Aviva Kempner. Kempner is a distinguished filmmaker who investigates non-stereotypical images of Jews in history and focuses on the untold stories of Jewish heroes. Hank Greenberg certainly qualifies on both counts. Her 1999 documentary on Greenberg is the result of 13 years of effort (largely due to difficulties in raising funds) and received numerous awards for excellence from various film festivals and associations of film critics. The reasons are obvious.

A Christian friend bet me a few years ago that I couldn't name an all Jewish major league baseball team. I was able to name a Jewish ball player for every position except shortstop, so I lost the bet. But the research I set in motion to find a Jewish shortstop has, two years later, paid off. I now have that Jewish shortstop and a complete Jewish team. I have Hank Greenberg, the Detroit slugger who nearly broke Babe Ruth's record and experienced a lot of anti-Semitism because of it, on first base. Joe Gordon, the Yankee, is on second base. Prejudice kept a lot of "closet" Jews from admitting their heritage. Joe was one of them. Mike Mordecai also played second base for the Atlanta Braves. On third base is Al Rosen of the Cleveland Indians who later became their manager. Behind the plate we have Mike Lieberthal of the Phillies, Norm Sherry for the Dodgers, Jessie Levis for the Brewers and Jeff Newman from Oakland. Then there is Moe Berg, a mediocre catcher who played for the Boston Red Sox. Moe worked for the CIA during World War II, obtained a Ph.D. from Columbia and spoke eight languages. But he couldn't hit in any of those languages so he had to give up baseball. The outfield is well covered with Shawn Green, currently playing for the Dodgers; Art Shamsky from the Mets once hit three home runs in one game.

The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg
    The Baseball Crank Rating:
3 for 4 (two HR, a line drive single, and a solid fly-out)
August 21, 2000 Listening to Ken Griffey, Jr. whine about the pressure of performing under the constant scrutiny of insanely high expectations from fans, media, and baseball as a whole, one is almost tempted to sympathize with him. For a normal guy to put up with all that seems a bit much, especially when he's really so very good, and signed for something less than his market value. I don't blame Griffey although one should expect something of a pedestal when one is a product endorser and media darling. But then one might read one of Jackie Robinson's books, or go see a film like "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg," and realize what a true superstar is made of. It includes the stuff to rise above "pressure" like Junior will never, ever face. Hank Greenberg didn't get a lot of press during the recent retrospective hoopla of the All-Century team and picking a gazillion lists of all-everything players. There's probably two reasons why history is on the verge of forgetting Greenberg, really one of the greatest sluggers ever. First is his statistical line: a career 331 homers and a .313 average just doesn't seem that impressive in the context of 70 homer years and near - .400 averages. Second, Greenberg was just not truly controversial in any way. He was a good, steady guy who didn't eat 20 hot dogs at a sitting, guzzle champagne out of flappers' slippers, hold out in spring training for a higher salary, or be colorful in any particular way. He wasn't what makes a good "story" by the modern metric.

review by Zach B. Rated PG Running Time: 95 minutes Written and Directed by Aviva Kempner Studio: Fox Retail Price: $29.98 Features: Audio Commentary with Director/Writer/Editor Aviva Kempner, Hank Greenberg Stats, Filmmaker's Biography, Additional Interviews, Director's Notes, Reviews, Hank Greenberg Biography, Trailer Specs: 1.33:1 Full Screen, English Dolby Digital 2.0, English Subtitles, Yiddish Subtitles (in English transliteration), Spanish Subtitles, English Closed Captions, Scene Selection Released: October 16th, 2001 So who was Hank Greenberg exactly? Again, he was baseball's first Jewish star who played during the 1930s. This documentary, which took over a decade to complete, literally offers the whole history of Greenberg pretty much. While I didn't know so much about him, I learned a tremendous amount. I don't know why, but people don't really know who he is. With a strong batting average and nearly breaking some famous world records, it baffles me somewhat why he's not looked upon highly as an "old school" star. He was really an incredible player. Presented in its original 1.33:1 full screen aspect ratio, the documentary has an old look to it and due to the variety of sources, the quality varies. There's a lot of old newsreel footage, old film footage and filmed interviews. There are scratches and blemishes as expected, but this direct to film transfer ruins the look of what seems to be videotaped interviews. Still, none of this is ever distracting. A lot is meant to be this way. So, it's fine for what it is... and you won't notice this documentary really grabs hold of you.
