We are not documentary fans. We don’t watch much baseball. We aren’t Jewish. Nonetheless, Life and Times of Hank Greenberg captivated and entertained us. Twelve years in the making because of lack of funding and already an Audience Award Winner at the Hamptons International Film Festival and the winner of Spirit Award for best Sport Documentary at the International Sports Video and Film Awards, Life and Times of Hank Greenberg is a wonderful and much needed tribute to the great Jewish baseball player.

Served as Vice President of the Chicago White Sox AWARDS: Elected to All Star Team in 1937, ‘38 and ‘40. Selected as AL MVP in 1935 and 1940. Inducted into Baseball Hall of Fame 1956 NEAR MISSES: In 1937, Greenberg fell one RBI short of Lou Gehrig ’s AL record of 184. In 1938, Hank came within two home runs of the then single-season record of 60 set by Babe Ruth REPLACED BY: Rudy York was needed in the weak Tiger lineup, so Detroit moved Hank to left field. BIGGEST DAY Hank's grand slam on the final day of the 1945 season against the St. Louis Browns won the American League pennant for the Tigers. The blast came in the top of the ninth and eliminated the Washington Senators, who had finished their season a week earlier due to scheduling conflicts with pro football. The Tigers had trailed 3-2 before loading the bases to set up the dramatic homer by Greenberg, which is perhaps the most historic home run in Detroit Tigers history.

Career Batting Record A right-handed first baseman, Greenberg put up some amazing RBI figures during his career and once challenged Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a season. The 6-foot-31/2, 210-pound Greenberg starred in basketball as well as baseball in high school, then signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers that allowed him to enter New York University in 1929. However, he left school in the spring of 1930 to pursue his baseball career. Greenberg had just one at-bat with the Tigers that year and didn't rejoin the team until 1933, when he became a starter. He led the AL in doubles with 63 in 1934, when he hit .339 with 26 home runs and 139 RBI to help lead the Tigers into the World Series. Despite Greenberg's .321 average and 7 RBI, Detroit lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. He was named the league's most valuable player in 1935. He hit .328 that season and led the league with 36 home runs and 170 RBI. The Tigers won the World Series, but Greenberg suffered a broken wrist in the second game. The wrist was broken again early in the 1936 season and Greenberg appeared in only 12 games. However, he came back with 40 home runs and 183 RBI, one short of Lou Gehrig's AL record, in 1937 and the following year he hit 58 home runs to tie Jimmy Foxx's record for a right-handed hitter.

Debut: Pos : 1B/OF Ht: Wt B: T: R Years Games AB Hits HR RBI SB Avg Hank Greenberg played less than 10 full seasons in the Major Leagues, but he certainly made a statement. He was the first Jewish player not to hide his ethnic background. He was one of the first baseball players to leave the game to enlist in the service in World War II. He earned an MVP at first base and then, after switching postiions, earned one while he was playing left field.. Greenberg was a massive player for his time, standing 6'4 and weighing 215 pounds. The son of Jewish immigrants, Greenberg graduated from a high school in the Bronx and played one semester for New York University. He had a tryout with the New York Giants, but manager John McGraw thought Greenberg was too clumsy. Despite this rejection, Greenberg received lucrative offers from the Yankees and the Senators. With the Yankees, Greenberg saw little future as a first baseman if he had to wait to play behind Lou Gehrig. He turned down both those offers and signed with the Detroit Tigers in 1930. He appeared in one game that season for the Tigers, picking up a single at-bat.

Filmmaker Aviva Kempner's thirteen-year labor of love is close to fruition. When Detroit Tiger immortal Hank Greenberg passed away in 1986, Kempner was galvanized by childhood memories of outings to Tiger Stadium with her father and brother, and by the reverence that the great slugger was held in by Jewish communities all across America during the thirties and forties. More than a decade before Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color barrier, Hank Greenberg performed a similar pioneering role for the Jewish ballplayer. Prior to Greenberg's arrival in Detroit, most Jewish ballplayers had changed their names in order to cover up their ethnicity. Not so with Hank. While he was by no means a devout practitioner of the Jewish faith, Greenberg embraced his ethnic background and stood tall—even taller than his 6'4" frame—on the issue of tolerance. Kempner captures Greenberg's unfailingly positive vision of a society where difference is not just tolerated, but respected.

I n the 1930s Jewish mothers would ask their sons: "What kind of a day did Hank have?" Hank Greenberg, the Detroit Tigers slugger who came close to breaking Babe Ruth's homerun record, was baseball's first Jewish star. Tall (6'4"), handsome, and uncommonly good-natured, Greenberg was a secular Jew from the Bronx who became "the baseball Moses," an icon for everyone from Walter Matthau ("I joined the Beverly Hills tennis club to eat lunch with him. I don't even play tennis") to Alan Dershowitz ("I thought he'd become the first Jewish president"). Aviva Kempner's loving tribute is chock full of wonderful archival footage from the '30s and '40s and interviews with a self-effacing Greenberg and many of his Tiger teammates. hanks to the intolerant outbursts of the Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker, a special timeliness surrounds the two-week run of the documentary "' The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg ," which begins today at the Film Forum. With Mr. Rocker's derogatory remarks about various minorities still fresh in our minds, this unabashed valentine by Aviva Kempner to baseball's Hall of Fame slugger demonstrates how little mankind and some of its sports figures have advanced since the 1930's and 40's and reminds us how the persistence of bigotry stains a nation founded on ideals like religious tolerance. The 1930's and 40's were the heyday of Greenberg , a son of Jewish immigrants who came out of the Bronx to star with the Detroit Tigers, threaten Babe Ruth's home run record (with 58 home runs in 1938), become the first man to win most valuable player awards at two positions, first base and left field, and become baseball's first $100,000 player. Greenberg was not the first Jewish man to play major-league baseball. But he was, during his career, by far the best Jewish player ever. Only Sandy Koufax has had similar success among Jewish players in the 50 years since Greenberg has retired. Greenberg was subject to the most vicious ethnic taunting seen in the sport prior to the arrival of Jackie Robinson in , Greenberg nevertheless became a first-rank ballplayer and an icon among Jews in the United States.

Product Reviews: Hank Greenberg the Jewish Babe Ruth/Moses/Jackie Robinson If the point of "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg" is lost on the viewer, then history itself put the writing on the wall when the owner of the Detroit Tigers misunderstood the meaning of an old photograph of Greenberg and traded his star to the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 1947 season. Greenberg's last season in the baseball was Jackie Robinson's first, and Greenberg was in the National League to witness it first hand. Not surprisingly, Greenberg was one of the few opposing ball players to offer Robinson encouragement in breaking baseball's color line. But then, as this 1999 documentary proved repeatedly, no white player in the history of the game had been subjected to the abuse Greenberg suffered because his was Jewish. Without a doubt Robinson suffered more, maybe even more that first season than Greenberg his entire career. But this documentary also shows that Greenberg was as important to the American Jewish community as Jackie was to African Americans.
