Friday, February 16 MESSIN' AROUND WITH BOP, PART 13
Batting Order Position Breakout Comparisons
1999-2000 Houston Astros

Statheads are rumbling and grumbling about the Astros, whose move to a new stadium in 2000 exposed the flimsy nature of their pitching staff and whose off-season moves seem counterintuitive. What?s clear amid the verbiage and the debris of 2000 is that the Astros are now firmly committed to what Brock Hanke would call a ?sluggery? team, a lineup built mostly around guys who ?stand and crank.? Given that predilection, they might want to volunteer for a shift to the AL, where they can rotate some of these guys in the DH slot.

BOP Stability: Principal player in BOP: Craig Biggio (1999, .841 OPS); Julio Lugo/Craig Biggio/Roger Cedeno/Bill Spiers (2000, .829/.757.792/.789 OPS) Note the rather sizable drop in SLG from this slot. This is mostly due to Biggio, who was hurt and didn?t produce the power numbers in either the #1 or #2 slot last year (.345 SLG in the #1 slot). Julio Lugo, who split time between SS and 2B as well as between the #1 and #2 slots, actually did pretty well in the leadoff slot and ought to get another shot to hold down the job, but there?s also the spectre of Jose Vizcaino?

Through some sort of miracle I don't fully understand, the Players' Association and Major League Baseball's administration came to an agreement, on, of all things, Tony Phillips' immediate future. Forcing the Anaheim Angels to reinstate Phillips led to an interesting box score in this morning's newspaper. Back in the lineup, collecting plate appearance 500 for the year (and a $100,000 incentive that goes with it) last night, he formed a 1-2 punch with the greatest leadoff hitter baseball has ever seen. Rickey Henderson is 38 now, up in there in years for a leadoff hitter, but even hitting in the .230/.240 range, as he did last year, he's an effective player, hitting with some power, drawing an obscene humber of walks, and still an efficient and distracting baserunner. He brings a .423 OBP into the lineup, right in that Ty Cobb/John McGraw range that he's sported most of his career. At this point in his career, he doesn't quite hit for average as he once did, but he's probably the most patient hitter in the game, making him nearly as effective an offensive force now as he was at his peak. Tony Phillips probably isn't the second most patient hitter in the game, but he's awfully close, part of a class of hitters (including Frank Thomas, Jim Thome, Mark McGwire, and Henderson) that will walk in 15 to 20 percent of plate appearances. In lieu of Henderson (and perhaps Kenny Lofton), Phillips is probably the best leadoff hitter in the game, bringing a .395 OBP and his aggressive, hustling style of play to the position. The combination of the two of them, frankly, ought to scare the hell out of any pitcher.

Welcome to the RSRBA 2000, Recliner Sports Rotisserie Baseball Association
We've made it to the millenium edition of the RSRBA. In the third year of its current format and fourth overall, we are trying to maintain our "perfect" record. In each of the previous three seasons, there has been a perfect game pitched in the major leagues. In more than 100 years of professional baseball, only 15 perfect games have been recognized. And 1998 and 1999 are the only consecutive years to have perfect games tossed. A tough record to top! Transactions are at the bottom of the page.
A look back at 1991's inaugural foray.
The return in 1998.
The 1999 results. The 2000 draft was held March 18, 2000, again at the Goodwin/Emken residence. Unlike the RSFL draft, which goes by position, the RSRBA draft is an open one. Each of the team owners drafted an AL team followed by an NL squad.
. . Scoring: Offense: Total base=2 points, RBI=3, Run scored=3, Stolen base=5, Walk=2, Error=(-10). Pitching: Win=10, Loss=0, Save=5, Complete game=10, Shutout=10, No-hitter=10, Perfect game=10. Team ERA will be on a sliding scale. For weekly ERA of 5.01-5.25 you get points. For each .25 below, add 5 points, for each .25 above, subtract 5 points. So 5.26-5.50 is -5, 4.76-5.00 is 5 and so on. Subtract 1 point for each hit and walk allowed and add 1 point for each strikeout.

Notebooks Baseball: The kids really are all right this season Sunday, April 29, 2001 After going 2 for 4 with a two-run double and a home run off prize Yankees free agent pitcher Mike Mussina in Boston's 8-3 victory last Saturday in front of 55,483 Yankee Stadium fans mainlining another near-lethal hit of the storied Red Sox-Yankees rivalry, rookie third baseman Shea Hillenbrand actually uttered the following with a straight face: "If you can produce here, you can pretty much play anywhere." Not exactly like Sinatra sang it, but The Guy In The Stands gets his reasoning if not his rhyme. New York, New York. Yankee Stadium. Baseball's Carnegie Hall. Rookies like Hillenbrand, who has hit in 22 of 24 games (.319) despite never having played above Class AA before this season, are making it everywhere this spring. And not just making it, but making it with substance and style.
