1998 Post-Season Review Toronto Blue Jays
By Tom Tippett
March 8, 1999 This article takes a look at how the Toronto Blue Jays did in the 1998 season relative to pre-season expectations. For an overview of the approach used in this review, and a definition of some of the key terms and statistics, please see the overview page called 1998 Team-by-Team Performance Reviews
Capsule Summary
Projected Actual Runs for 798 816 Runs allowed 792 768 Run Margin +6 +48 Wins 79 88 Pythagorean wins 82 86 Placement 4th 3rd Going into the season, there was a fair amount of optimism about this team, thanks to several free agent signings. But our analysis suggested that a .500 record would be about all that Jays fans could expect, and it seemed as if those fans had been set up for a disappointment. There was no question that the team had upgraded the offense by adding free agents Darrin Fletcher, Jose Canseco, and Mike Stanley, and they would have a full season from Jose Cruz Jr., who had arrived in a mid-season trade the year before. But the offense had been so pathetic the year before that these additions were not enough to move the attack into the top tier.

Capsule Summary
Projected Actual Runs for 821 883 Runs allowed 853 862 Run Margin -32 +21 Wins 78 84 Pythagorean wins 78 83 Placement 4th 3rd A year ago, some experts felt the Jays could grab the wildcard if several of their young hitters (Delgado, Stewart, Green) and hurlers (Carpenter, Escobar, Halladay) blossomed all at once. The team was coming off an 88-win season that saw them fall only four games shy of the Red Sox, and it stood to reason that they could be even better in 1999. Nevertheless, the consensus was that Toronto was still a year or two away, and our computer simulations supported that view. As it turned out, the young hitters did indeed come through in a big way, and when they managed to steal Tony Batista from the Diamondbacks, the offense got even better, rising to fifth in the league in scoring. The young pitchers had respectable seasons as well, but they didn't get enough help from the older members (Wells, Hentgen, and Hamilton) of a staff that wound up ninth in team ERA.

SWEEPING THE RED SOX:
Ejected? Mild-mannered Paul Quantrill?
Believe it. This game had everything.
By John Lott N ormally, Paul Quantrill is the essence of Canadian reserve. When he goes to work, he keeps his head down and his mouth shut. Before Sunday's game against Boston, the pitcher from Port Hope, Ont., had appeared in 331 major-league games without even tempting an umpire to toss him out of one. But on Sunday, shortly before the Blue Jays finished their dramatic sweep of the Red Sox, plate umpire Dale Scott found a way to goad the mild-mannered Quantrill into an ejection. And after the game, Quantrill was not shy about letting everyone know his side of the story. Before we provide the details, which may lighten Quantrill's bank account when all is said and done, here is the short version: Quantrill had a beef with first-base ump Ted Barrett. When Quantrill spoke his piece, Barrett said nothing. Then Scott jumped in and baited Quantrill, who, as he admitted, responded by saying some "bad things." Scott ejected the pitcher, and a few minutes later, added manager Tim Johnson to his list of exiles. (Earlier, Scott had also chased Boston skipper Jimy Williams, whose dirt-kicking post-ejection performance earned high marks from the 38,000 reviewers in the audience.)

PAT KELLY: Suddenly, the second-base picture
is becoming very complicated
P at Kelly hadn't really retired, and he wasn't going anywhere. It made a good story when Kelly said he and his wife were about to depart for her native Australia when the Blue Jays made an emergency call. Toronto needed a second baseman, what with Homer Bush and Craig Grebeck suddenly and simultaneously on the disabled list, and Pat Kelly was momentarily unemployed. Sure, the veteran Kelly said, I'll fill in for a while. Australia can wait. In fact, Kelly said after a recent game, he and his wife had not packed their bags. They had considered moving to her homeland for some time, he said, but actually, he was hoping someone would call with a big-league job offer after the Cardinals released him at the end of spring training. So when he joined the Jays and the reporters descended on him, he tossed them the story of his postponed move Down Under. "It was just something to say to the press," Kelly said with a small smile a few nights later, as he changed his T-shirt before scooting back to the weight room. "I was going to wait (for a call)." When Bush and Grebeck went down, Toronto first called up Paco Martin from Syracuse. He fielded well but didn't hit. A few days later, Kelly walked in and manager Jim Fregosi put him right into the lineup.

February 2, 2003 CARSON, Calif. The 2003 Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team broke in the new Toro Field by pushing across 23 runs against the alumni in a 23-1 game of fun Sunday afternoon at the 16th Annual Robert Wing Memorial Alumni Game. Prior to the game, the program honored alum's present from the 1986 squad, which captured the first-ever CCAA Championship in program history. Former greats present from the '86 team included: Fred Hanker, Mike Brocki, Chris Plank, Mike Perryman, 12-year major league veteran Craig Grebeck and former Toros assistant coach Steve Boaz. The ceremonial ribbon cutting followed with both the 1986 and 1994 CCAA championship teams doing the honors along with several CSUDH administrators. All in all, it was a day of great fun, memories and a lot of reminiscing for everyone in attendance. In the game, senior DH Frank Perez went 3-for-3 with a double and two long blasts over the left field wall. Junior Nick Sloey added three doubles while junior transfer Zac Cort went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a triple. The alum lone run of the game came in the sixth inning on an Eric Martin mammoth solo homerun into the parking lot over the right field wall.

Former Major Leaguer and CSUDH alum to throw out first pitch at new Toro Field on February 2
January 24, 2003 Courtesy Cal State Dominguez Hills Sports Information Office CARSON, Calif. The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball alumni will help christen its new baseball field on Sunday, February 2 at the 16th Annual Robert Wing Memorial Alumni Baseball Game. Former Toro great and 12-year major league veteran Craig Grebeck is scheduled to throw out the very first pitch at the new Toro Field. Grebeck became the Toros first-ever First Team All-American in 1986 after leading CSUDH to its first-ever CCAA title and a berth in the NCAA West Regional Championship. He, along with former Toro baseball greats Mike Brocki (2B), Fred Hanker (3B) and Kevin Whalen (1B), helped form arguably the best infield ever in CSUDH history. Grebeck was signed as a free agent with the Chicago White Sox in August of 1986 and broke into the majors with the White Sox in 1990. It was during the 1990 season that Grebeck hit his first major league home run against Texas' Nolan Ryan on August 10.
