Lefty Gomez License Plate Lefty Gomez was the pitching ace on the New York Yankees staff in the 1930s. His lifetime record was 189 wins and 102 losses (1930-1943), and he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972 . Aside from being a great pitcher, he was also a great prankster and his teammates called him "Goof."
This is Lefty's license plate from 1956 . Vanity license plates were not too common in those days. When he was driving to Yankee Stadium from his home in Connecticut, a lot of drivers on the road probably tried to figure out what comedian was in the car in front of them. Little did many of them know it was the only man to win six games and lose none in World Series play the great Lefty Gomez.

Career Pitching Record At 6-foot-2, Gomez weighed only 173 pounds, but his long arms gave him the leverage to throw a very good fastball, and early in his major league career he developed an excellent slow curve that drove hitters crazy. He had a 2-5 record in a brief stint with the New York Yankees in 1930, but became a regular starter the following season and had a 21-9 record with a 2.67 ERA. Gomez went 24-7 in 1932 and won the second game of the World Series 7-2 as the Yankees swept the Cubs in four games. After leading the league with 163 strikeouts in 1933, Gomez won the first of two pitching triple crowns. He was tops in the AL in victories and winning percentage with a 26-5 record, in strikeouts with 158, and in ERA with a 2.33 mark. He also led the league with 6 shutouts, despite the fact that he started only 33 games because of an arm injury late in the season. The arm continued to bother him for the next two years, when he had a combined 25-22 record, but he won two games in the 1936 World Series. In 1937 he bounced back to win his second triple crown, leading in victories with a 21-11 record, in strikeouts with 194, and in ERA at 2.33, along with a league-leading 6 shutouts. Gomez won two more games against the New York Giants in the World Series, giving up just 3 runs in 18 innings.

Lefty Gomez: The Life of the Party

    By C. Paul Rogers III
Vernon Louis Gomez was born in the small North Bay town of Rodeo, California on November 26, 1908, and enlivened the planet for over eighty years. He was a bit of a screwball, hence his "El Goofy" nickname, but his oddball demeanor and self-deprecating wit did not overshadow his ability as a pitcher. For thirteen years he provided his Yankee teammates with a lot of laughs and, more importantly, with topflight pitching, appearing in five World Series and winning six games without a loss for the Bronx Bombers. Lefty was certainly not goofy when the chips were down. But, to the consternation of Yankee manager Joe McCarthy, Gomez did once stop a World Series game to watch a plane flying overhead. It was the second game of the 1936 World Series, and when Lefty came to the bench at the end of the inning, McCarthy spewed forth, "Whaddaya tryin' to do out there, ya nut! Are ya tryin' to lose the game for us?" To which the unflappable Gomez replied, "Listen, Joe, I've never seen a pitcher lose a game by not throwing the ball."

  • Yankees win first title without Ruth 1936 WAS A YEAR of change for the New York Yankees. After losing the two previous pennants to the Detroit Tigers, the Yankees found new life in 1936 and they found a star outfielder for the future. THE YANKEES WERE looking for a pennant, their first since 1932. For New York, this was a cruicial period in team history. Prior to 1935, the Yankees had released the legendary Babe Ruth. Ruth played briefly for the Boston Braves in 1935 and retired from baseball. For the Yankees, winning a series without Ruth in the lineup would be a tremendous boost to their future legacy. That's what they did in 1936 with the offense led by Gehrig and DiMaggio. In his first season in the Major Leagues, DiMaggio hit 29 home runs and drove in 129 runs. His batting average was third on the team, trailing only Gehrig and Dickey. GEHRIG RESPONDED with an MVP season. He hit 49 home runs and drove in 152 runs and put up a .354 batting average. Dickey, the catcher, hit 22 home runs and drove in 107 and led the team with a .362 batting average.

It is hard to judge whether Vernon Gomez is better known as the fire-throwing left-hander of the successful Yankees teams of the 1930s, or as the man that made clowning around the diamond famous. "El Goofo" as he was called in his native tongue, pitched his way into five World Series. He set a record in World Series competition by recording six consecutive victories without a loss. Over his 14-year career, he won 20 games four times, led the league in wins twice, and won the American League strikeout title three times. In 1972, Lefty joined many of his teammates from the Yankees in baseball’s Hall of Fame.
