Interview with Larry Jansen "I just wish I could pitch for one year!", former Major League pitcher Larry Jansen says when asked about today's salaries. But you get the sense he wouldn't trade today's money for a single memory of his life long career in baseball. Jansen was a 1950 All-Star pitcher (he induced Joe Dimaggio to hit a fly ball), a two time 20 game winner, and the winning pitcher in perhaps the greatest baseball game ever played, Game 3 of the 1951 playoff between the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers. A lifetime resident of Oregon, Jansen took time to reflect on his days in New York with the Giants, his role in the classic pennant chase of 1951, and his experience as pitching coach with the San Francisco Giants. His story is living history, and we are very proud to present a part of it in this exclusive Jerry Jazz Musician interview, conducted April 9, 1999. Jansen's early career The 1951 Giant/Dodger pennant race Jansen's role during the pennant race Game 3 of playoff ... Juan Marichal and John Roseboro, 1965 Jansen's early career JJM: Did you begin your career with the New York Giants?

They've changed the game to the point where they don't even want you to pitch inside. They don't call strikes inside they call strikes away. You pitch on the inside corner, and they'll call it a ball. If you throw the ball inside, pitch it inside, the umpire will come out and shake his finger at you. All of these things, and then they say, 'Well, the pitchers don't pitch inside.' Well, of course they don't pitch inside, they won't allow you to. So they blame the pitchers. Why don't they blame baseball for changing the game the way they changed it? The first thing they did to change the game as far as the pitchers were concerned, they lowered the mound by five inches because pitchers were getting to be too good at their profession and they wanted the hitters to get a little bit more of an advantage, so they lowered the mound and then they made the strike zone smaller. And then they did this, then they did that, now you can't do this, you can't do that. And all of it was aimed at getting more scoring in the game. Now, we're at a point where people are saying, 'Well, pitchers aren't effective anymore and they don't do this and they don't do that.' Well, the game was changed so they wouldn't (be effective).

Special to ESPN.com
When it came to winning "the big game," there were few pitchers who compared with Bob Gibson. As outstanding as the St. Louis Cardinals' scowling right-hander was at other times, he was at his most ferocious when the spotlight shined brightest. Batters didn't enjoy this view while Bob Gibson was putting together a career in which he was 251-174 with a 2.91 ERA ... and even better in the postseason. Twice in the 1960s, this fierce competitor won the seventh game of the World Series (and he might have done it a third time if not for a misjudged fly ball). He holds Series records for winning seven consecutive games and pitching eight straight complete games. And nobody has ever struck out as many batters in a Series game (17) or in a Series (35). Not that the intense Gibson was a slouch in the regular season. One doesn't get into the Hall of Fame just for October successes. In a 10-year stretch, Gibson averaged 19 wins a season. In a six-year period, he was a 20-game winner five times (the only time he missed was when he was sidelined two months in 1967 after taking a Roberto Clemente line drive off one of his legs). And there was that marvelous year of 1968 when Gibson entered the record book for compiling a 1.12 earned-run average, the lowest number by a National League pitcher in modern times. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder threw 13 shutouts, five consecutively, and in one 92-inning stretch he allowed only two earned runs. He won the MVP and the first of his two Cy Young Awards that season.

It's rare in professional sports that rules change to accommodate the talents of an athlete or team - for instance, the powerful Edmonton Oiler offense caused the National Hockey League to make teams players five-on-five instead of four-on-four in the event of concurrent minor penalties - but that's pretty much what baseball did in 1969. After 1968, the Year of the Pitcher, professional baseball lowered the mound from 15" to 10". Looking at Gibson's 1968, it's no wonder - he registered a 1.12 ERA (the fourth lowest ERA in a single season this century), logged over 304 innings in 34 starts, recorded 13 shutouts (the third highest total in a single season), and struck out 268 batters. During one stretch Gibson allowed only two runs over 92 innings. His strikeouts to innings ratio approached 1.0, while he walked only 62 batters all season. At one point he won fifteen games in succession. In fact, his 23-9 record was startling only in that he somehow lost 9 games despite allowing just 38 earned runs all season long.

SHANE MCCORMICK
Earlier this summer, a friend of mine called to see if I wanted to go to Colorado for a week and try and catch a Colorado Rockies game. I was a little hesitant at first, but when he told me who they would be playing that week, I immediately said yes. The Rockies were scheduled to play the Atlanta Braves in a three-game series. I have been a Braves fan for many years. We got the second game of the series, which of course the Braves won. But we decided to stay an extra day and get tickets to the last game of the series. Our reason was simple. Greg Maddux was pitching for the Braves. At the time I might not have noticed it, but I was watching the greatest pitcher to ever play the game. I know there are some of you that are jumping out of your seats right now, astonished I could make such a statement. Some of you might think Maddux isn't as good as former pitchers Cy Young, Bob Gibson or Sandy Koufax. You're right, he isn't as good. He's better than them or any other pitchers to play the game. Let's take a look at what Maddux has done just this year.
