LOU GEHRIG Baseball Player Name at Birth: Henry Louis Gehrig Gehrig played in 2130 consecutive games for the New York Yankees from 1925 to 1939, gaining the nickname "The Iron Horse." A slugging first baseman, Gehrig played with teammates like Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio during the Yankee glory years of the 1920s and 1930s. Gehrig won a rare triple crown in 1934, leading the league with 49 homers, 165 RBI and a .363 batting average. He also was chosen the league's most valuable player in 1927 and 1936, but is best-remembered for his 15-season streak of consecutive games, a record which stood until it was broken by Cal Ripken in 1995. Gehrig retired after 8 games of the 1939 season and was diagnosed with the degenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS now known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. The Yankees held a recognition day for Gehrig on 4 July 1939, at which he spoke his famous line, "Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth." He died two years later in New York.
Extra credit : Wally Pipp, the player Gehrig replaced at the start of his streak, has become a famous bit of baseball trivia... The Yankees retired Gehrig's uniform number 4 in 1939 the first player in any sport ever to receive that honor... Gehrig was played by actor

Books about ALS Robyn's Race!!! e-mail the Webmaster Baseball's Iron Man Henry Louis Gehrig was born in New York City on June 19, 1903. His parents, although very poor, tried to provide the best care for their only surviving son. Lou was the only one of four children to survive childhood. For this reason, he was very caring and kind. He was a model son, never getting into trouble and always working hard. Baseball did not come naturally to him at a young age. It wasn't until he went to school until he began to improve as a baseball player. Once in school, he began to shine. He started his college career at Colombia University. He was advised the summer before his freshman year to play minor league baseball by New York Giants Manager Joe McGraw. He was to use a different name, in hope that he would not get caught in this illegal activity. He played and got caught. He was banned from college athletics for his freshman year from 1921 to 1922. Gehrig played football following the suspension in 1922 and played baseball in 1923. Following his college season, he was signed and played for Hartford, the team for which he played illegally. At the end of playing with Hartford, he was called up to the majors in September and although he played extremely well, he was not placed on the World Series roster. This brief, but successful stint with the Yankees would be the beginning of his illustrious career. He played for Hartford again in 1924 and batted .369. Because of his performance in 1924, he was assigned the job of starting first baseman for the Yankees in 1925.

LOU GEHRIG Biographies are often students' favorite reading material. Informative and inspiring, they are an entry into the further study of history, politics, sport, art, science, or the wider world of reading. Even those students who are not enthusiastic readers will gladly tackle biographies of people who interest them.
Student Text Teacher Guide Quiz One of the primary genres of literature, biographies play a major role in any language-arts program. But they can also be used across the curriculum to introduce units in social studies, science, and arts and values education. The life stories of men and women who have accomplished great things, overcome tremendous obstacles, or devoted themselves to lofty ideals make historical movements and events relevant and intelligible to young readers. Such people serve as encouraging role models for today's youth as well, motivating them to reach higher and further. The difficulties the subjects faced can be springboards for wide-ranging discussions that require students to think critically and express their ideas in clear and logical ways.

Lou Gehrig The Philadelphia fans settled into their seats for the baseball game between their home team, the Athletics, and the New York Yankees. The sky was cloudless on that June 3, 1932, afternoon. It was a perfect day for baseball. It would turn out to be an unforgettable one, too. The first Yankee batter of the game got on base. The next batter made an out, and the batter after that‹the great Babe Ruth‹struck out. This brought Lou Gehrig up to bat. The Philadelphia pitcher, George Earnshaw, wound up and threw the ball. Gehrig swung, there was a loud srnack, and the baseball sailed far over the left-field fence. It was a home run. Now the Yankees led, 2-0. The teams battled on, and every time Philadelphia tied the score or went ahead of the Yankees, Lou Gehag came to bat. Each of those times, his hitting put the Yankees in front again. He hit his second home run of the game in the fourth i~ming, and his third home run in the fifth inning. In the seventh inning, the first two Yankees to bat hit home runs. Philadelphia's manager, Connie Mack, decided to talce Earnshaw out of the game and replace him with relief pitcher Roy Mahaffoy. As Earnshaw approached the Philadelphia dugout, Manager Mack said, "Watch closely. I want you to see how Mahaffey pitches to Gehrig." Earnshaw, Mack, both teams, and thousands of fans watched closely. Mahaffey reared back and threw his best pitch to Gehrig. Gehrig, in turn, did his best. He drove the ball over the right-field fence. Incredibly, it was his fourth home run of the game!

http://www.serve.com/shea/germusa/lgehrig.htm
LOU GEHRIG: "The Iron Horse"
by Shelley McDonald The promises of gold-lined streets and a better way of life lured many Europeans away from the poverty and persecution in the Old World during the late 1800s. The quota of immigrants from Germany at that time was almost as large as that of all Eastern and Mediterranean Europe combined. Among that favored group were Christina Flack and Heinrich Gehrig, who were to become the parents of Lou Gehrig, one of America's most famous professional baseball players. Christina was born in 1881 in Wiltser, Schleswig-Holstein, a province of pre-World War I Germany, near the German-Danish border. She emigrated to the United States in 1899. Heinrich Ludwig Gehrig was born in 1867 in Adelsheim, Baden, and came to America in October of 1888. He originally spent some time in Chicago, but later settled in New York, where he met Christina who was fourteen years younger than he and stout as a keg. Like Heinrich, she was a Lutheran. They married in 1900. In Boston and Pittsburgh in 1903, young men picked up their bats in the first modern World Series while Heinrich Gehrig was hoisting a stein of beer at his favorite German saloon in the Yorkville section of New York City where he and Christina had settled. Yorkville was a predominantly German neighborhood, but also contained Hungarian and Jewish families.
