Lou Gehrig:
Farewell to Baseball, July 4, 1939
delivered by Lou Gehrig, on July 4, 1939 Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans. Look at these grand men. Which of you wouldn't consider it the highlight of his career just to associate with them for even one day? Sure, I'm lucky. Who wouldn't consider it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert; also the builder of baseball's greatest empire, Ed Barow; to have spent six years with that wonderful little fellow Miller Huggins; then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology the best manager in baseball today Joe McCarthy! Sure, I'm lucky. When the New York Giants, a team you would give your right arm to beat, and vice versa, sends you a gift, that's something! When everybody down to the groundskeepers and those boys in white coats remember you with trophies, that's something. When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles against her own daughter, that's something. When you have a father and mother who work all their lives so that you can have an education and build your body, it's a blessing! When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed, that's the finest I know.

In 1935, Yankee slugger Lou Gehrig was at the peak of his play. With Babe Ruth not a Yankee anymore (he was finishing out his career with the Boston Braves), the Yankees were Gehrig's team.
That year, Lou's beloved wife Eleanor collaborated with a popular songwriter of the era, Fred Fisher, to write an ode to her husband entitled, "I Can't Get To First Base With You."
Gehrig's facsimile signature appears on his left arm on the sheet music. On his right arm, on this copy, Lou signed his name.

http://www.flash.net/~ebrock/opinions/lou.htm
Cecil's Lou Gehrig Page Top Ten List Lou Gehrig Quotes Lou Gehrig's Speech Return to Cecil's Opinions Top Ten Reasons Cecil thinks Lou Gehrig is the greatest baseball player ever
He holds major league record for grand slams (23). He also hit 73 three-run homers, and he hit 166 two-run shots, giving him the highest average of RBIs per homer of any player with more than 300 home runs. He batted cleanup after Babe Ruth for many years. Even the Babe admitted Gehrig was partially responsible for Ruth getting good pitches to hit. He had a career average of .340, never hitting below .300 from 1926 to 1937. He had 200 or more hits in eight seasons. He batted .361 in World Series play, averaging an RBI a game for 34 games with 43 hits, 10 of them homers. He led the league in homers in 1934 and 1936 and tied Ruth for the lead in 1931 with 46, when Lyn Lary's baserunning mistake (passing a runner on the bases) robbed him of his 47 th (and the outright league lead). On June 3, 1932, Gehrig became the first American Leaguer to hit four home runs in a game. After Gehrig's third homer to right field in a game against Philadelphia, an upset Connie Mack removed pitcher George Earnshaw and demanded that Earnshaw stay with him to watch reliever Roy Mahaffey pitch to Gehrig. Gehrig's fourth homer was to left field, and only a great catch by Al Simmons kept Gehrig from hitting his fifth homer of the day. He was American League MVP in 1927 (on a Yankee team widely considered the best team in history) and again in 1936.

Archives Books in Education Article B O O K S I N E D U C A T I O N A R T I C L E Lou Gehrig: The Luckiest Man This week as shouts of Plaaaaay ball! echo across North America is the perfect time to introduce a new picture book from David A. Adler. A "must-have" for school libraries, Adler's compelling story of a Yankee legend will appeal to all readers boys and girls, young and old. A great tool for teaching compassion and good citizenship! Plaaaaay ball! This week as those words echo in ballparks across the land is a great time to take a look back in time.
The year is 1903: "1903 was a year of great beginnings. Henry Ford sold his first automobile and the Wright Brothers made the first successful flight in an airplane. In baseball, the first World Series was played. The team later known as the Yankees moved from Baltimore to New York. And on June 19, 1903, Henry Louis Gehrig was born. He would become one of the greatest players in baseball history." So begins Lou Gehrig: The Luckiest Man , a new biography from the pen of David A. Adler (and the presses of Gulliver Books/Harcourt Brace). Adler's book tells the inspirational story of one of the greatest ballplayers of all time. It's the stuff from which movies are made!

He was preparing to enter Columbia University when he was encouraged by Giants Manager John McGraw to play summer professional baseball under an assumed name ("Henry Lewis"). "Everyone does it," McGraw explained, even though the illegal ball playing jeopardized Gehrig's collegiate sports career. Gehrig was discovered after playing a dozen games for Hartford of the Eastern League. As a result, Gehrig was banned from intercollegiate sports during his freshman year, 1921-22. Gehrig returned to collegiate sports to play fullback during Columbia's 1922 football season, and then pitched and played first for the Columbia Nine in 1923. Signed by Yankee scout Paul Krichell in 1923, Gehrig returned to Hartford and hit .304. Called up to the majors in September, he hit .423 in 26 at-bats. Ruth and Gehrig began dominating the baseball headlines in 1927, in a way two players had never done before. That year Ruth hit 60 homers, breaking his old record of 59, and Gehrig clouted 47, more than anyone other than Ruth had ever hit. As late as August 10th, Gehrig had more homers than the Babe, but Ruth's closing kick was spectacular. Together they out-homer'ed every team in baseball except one.

No player in baseball history has combined the qualities of Gehrig: he was the greatest first baseman ever, one of the three or four best hitters the game had ever seen, an enduring part of the Yankees legend, and eventually a tragic figure of mythic proportion. Because he was a native New Yorker and a charismatic, humble figure, his popularity in the 1930s was unsurpassed. Lou Gehrig was so durable and dependable that he was nicknamed "The Iron Horse" - he played in an amazing 2,130 consecutive games, a record which stood for over 54 years. The big first baseman teamed with Babe Ruth to form the greatest one-two punch in Baseball history. He had at least 100 RBI and 100 runs every full season of his career - 13 straight years - led the AL 5 times in RBI and 4 times in runs. He topped 150 RBI 7 times, a ML record, and is third all-time on the RBI list. His .632 slugging average also ranks third, and when he retired, only Ruth had hit more home runs. His 184 RBI in 1931 remains the modern AL mark.
