Lou "Iron Horse" Gehrig was quite possibly the best first baseman to ever play at Yankee Stadium. His stunning athletic ability made him an American hero, while his untimely death made him a legend. In his 14-year career, Lou broke many records. This left-handed player had a career total of 23 grand slams and a lifetime batting average of .361. He was voted Most Valuable Player in 1927 and 1936 and won the 1934 Triple Crown. Lou, short for Henris Louis Gehrig, was born in New York City, New York, in a section of Manhattan called Yorkville. His parents, Heinrich and Christina Fack were German immigrants. In elementary school, Lou found the time between working odd jobs to play sports. He would play whatever sport was in season: soccer, football, basketball, gymnastics or baseball. He also played marbles, billiards and checkers. Lou's attendance at school was remarkable. He never missed a day just like he would never miss a baseball game later in life. Following graduation from elementary school, Lou attended Manhattan's High School of Commerce. While traveling by railroad with his high school team to compete in Chicago, Lou met President William Howard Taft, who told the team that he was "looking forward to seeing [them] play." At this game, Lou hit a game-winning grand slam, beating the opposing team 12-6.

    LOU GEHRIG
    Baseball player
    Born in 1903 - Died in 1941
Lou Gehrig was one of baseball's great players. His parents didn't want him to make a career of baseball. They thought it was a waste of time, but he loved the game. He was on his high school baseball team. A talent scout saw him and offered him a sports scholarship in college.
The family didn't have much money because his father was ill. His mother was a cook at the college and Lou waited on tables to help pay his way.
He started playing for the New York Yankees in 1923. His parents scraped together $14 for him to make the trip to spring training camp in New Orleans. When he got there, he started looking for a job, but the team paid him some money in advance. (They usually paid the players at the end of the training camp.) He was able to concentrate on practicing and improving his skills.
He improved so much that two different times, he was named American League Most Valuable player. He was called the
    "Iron Horse".
He played in every game for 14 years without missing even one. He played over 2000 games. That was a record that wasn't broken for 50 years.
But then something bad happened. He could barely swing the bat and he couldn't run around the bases any more. He knew that something was wrong. He went to specialists

Like a lot of people, I knew Lou Gehrig was a famous baseball player, and died from a rare disease which was later named after him. After I was diagnosed with ALS, I decided to look into the life of Lou Gehrig. What I found was that not only was Gehrig a superb ball player, he was also an incredible human being. Gehrig was modest, never flashy, and as a result he did not receive the attention that was bestowed on his colorful team-mate, Babe Ruth. Gehrig was even tempered and well liked by baseball fans and the press. As Fred Lieb, sportswriter, said: "There was absolutely no reason to dislike him, and nobody did." On July 4 th , 1939 the Yankee organization held "Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day." On this day, Lou Gehrig gave the famous speech quoted at the beginning of this page. He was also presented with various awards and his number 4 was retired, the first player ever to have his number retired. The following December, he was unanimously elected into the Hall of Fame. The Baseball Writers Association waived the existing rule which required a player to be retired one year before he could be elected.. On June 2

During the summer of 1967, 15-year-old Dianne Morford was one of thousands of New England teenagers who spent the baseball season with a transistor radio glued to one ear, desperately hoping the Red Sox Impossible Dream would come true. Unlike her fellow fans, though, Morford had a deeper, more personal reason to celebrate when Boston won the American League pennant.
Growing up in Wellesley, she lived around the corner from one of New
England's foremost baseball couples, Dominic and Emily DiMaggio, who also happened to be her aunt and uncle. She learned baseball by watching televised games with the former Boston center fielder, brother of Yankee Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio. Dom, "The Little Professor," had a distinguished 11-year career with the Red Sox. He wasn't Joe, but he was a very good player.
Morford eventually left New England to join the Navy, serving as a meteorologist until she left the military and settled in Monterey, Calif., where she married and raised her daughter, Lindsey, who is now 12. Even in California, though, Morford (who is now divorced) remained a New Englander and a staunch Red Sox fan, following the fortunes of the team from the Left Coast.

Ill sock Lou in the Nose This is an incredible ball. The story I have, is it was given to Kathryn (Kay) B Brown, Born Sept. 28, 1896, Married to Herb Ward, No children. She was in Waterloo, or Des Moines She and her husband were rather well off, and had many friends including many ball players. I got the ball from a man named Jack, Kay was his grandmothers sister. Kay Passed away June 27, 1980 and left the ball to Jack.
By looking at the inscriptions on this ball, you can just imagine that here is the Babe, and Lou possibly flirting with this attractive young lady at some function. I have spoken to several of the leading authenticators of Gehrig signed baseballs, and none of them have seen a ball signed H.L. Gehrig, and have told me I have a unique item. There are several other experts in the field, Jims contemporaries. Since I did not pay them to authenticate the ball, I will not use their names, but will say that they are very highly regarded in the autograph authentication community. They also looked at the ball, and loved it. I also want to add that none of them had ever seen Lou sign a ball "H.L. He collected more th an 400 total bases in five different seasons; a major league record. Only 16 players have achieved that level of power in a single season, Babe Ruth did it twice and Chuck Klein three times. Gehrig is one of only ten players with more with than 100 extra base hits in a single season, and only he and Chuck Klein did it in two different years. Lou Gehrig hit 23 career grand slam home runs, a major league record, he hit 73 three-run homers and 166 two-run homers, giving him the highest average of RBI's per home run of anybody in history with more than 300 HR's. On June 3, 1932, Gehrig hit four home runs in a single game becoming the first American League player to accomplish this feat. Gehrig won the Triple Crown in 1934 with a .363 batting average, hit 49 HR's with 165 RBI's. He was voted the Most Valuable Player in 1927 and in 1936.

Gehrig Lou Gehrig was baseball's original Iron Man, long before Cal Ripken Jr. arrived on the scene. His feats at first base and at the plate are still legendary and he was a key member of the 1927 New York Yankees and the 1936 Yankees, two teams often argued as the greatest in the game. A native of New York, Gehrig's career got its start at Columbia University. In his sophomore season, he hit 7 home runs with a .444 batting average. He was also a pitcher for Columbia, setting a school record with 17 strikeouts in a game. After signing with the New York Yankees, Gehrig spent two seasons with Hartford of the Easter League. He made it to the Major Leagues before his 20th birthday. Making the team Gehrig pinch hit for the New York Yankees on May 31, 1925, and, on the next day, stepped in to start first base for Wally Pipp who was out with a headache. For 2,130 consecutive games, Gehrig stayed in the New York lineup through starts or pinch hits. Gehrig finished his rookie season with a .295 average, 20 home runs and 68 RBI in 126 games.

The baseball career of Lou Gehrig
One of the most durable and feared hitters of the 20s and 30s, Lou Gehrig began his professional baseball career in the New York Yankees farm system in 1923. In 1925, his first full season as a Yankee, Gehrig hit .295 with 68 RBI. It would be the start of his 2,130 consecutive game playing streak, and the last full season that he would score and drive in less than 100 runs. While playing in Babe Ruth’s shadow for much of his career, Gehrig quietly went about his business, setting an American League record for RBI in 1931 with 184, nine more than the previous American League record, which he also held. In 1932, he became the first American League player to hit four homeruns in one game. He would finish with 493 for his career. He won two MVP awards for his solid hitting, base running, and defense at first base. His only batting title came in 1934, the year he won the league’s Triple Crown. He also holds the major league record for career grand slams with 23. bodyOffer(18606) As wonderful as Gehrig’s career was, it took a sharp turn downward beginning in 1938. He never felt completely right, and was in a horrible slump. He tried to start fresh in the 1939 season, but by May 2, he’d had enough.
