This summer were at a Fenway Park for a game against the White Sox excellent game, by the way, Pedro won 1-0. Sitting in front of was a couple with their son, who looked 10 or 12. They were from West Virginia. The woman explained that they had offered their son a trip to Disney World but he said no, he'd rather go to Fenway Park and see the Red Sox play. She said it rather proudly, as a sign that her son was growing up with real values. Last year they took him to St. Louis to see Mark McGwire hit his 60th home run. Her son was thrilled to be seeing Pedro pitch today. We talked awhile about how baseball games were deteriorating into "events". A gentleman a few seats over chimed in, "It's the same at Wrigley Field. It's all yuppies with cell phones, they don't even know who's playing any more." "I'm a Phillies fan, but my husband's a White Sox fan," said the woman from West Virginia. Her husband looked over at us, verifying emphatically. "We've had some friction,"she said, "like in '83 [when both teams were in the playoffs], but we get through it. "Do you remember that movie

Chicago White Sox
SNAPSHOT The White Sox, owned by Charlie Comiskey, joined the new American League in 1901. In the team's first season, the White Sox won the league's pennant. In 1906, the White Sox won the AL Pennant and finished off the Chicago Cubs to win the World Series in six games. The team won the World Series again in 1917, defeating New York in six games. The White Sox became one of history's infamous teams in 1919 when the team threw the World Series and lost to the underdog Cincinnati Reds. In 1920, eight members of the team, including Joe Jackson, were banned from baseball for life. The White Sox did not return to the World Series until 1959 - losing to Los Angeles. The White Sox have not advanced beyond the ALCS since that time. CHAMPIONSHIPS

A mechanic by vocation, Hank's real life is played out on the diamond. Like Fox, he is a second baseman and he is proud of the fact that he once made it up to the minors, although that fact makes his current lot, playing for a suburban Chicago league team sponsored by Shopalot, seem woefully inadequate.
The novel opens in one of its main settings Jerry and Larry's Sports Palace, where Lingerman is taking a ribbing from his lifelong-friend-and-nemesis-in-one, Tommy, about getting beaned by a pop-up and then simply walking away from the game in progress. While this humiliation might normally come under the heading "shit happens," for Hank it symbolizes his truly obsessive fear he's washed up in all aspects of his life "forty years old and no good anymore."
And while there is never a question that this is the love song, maybe even the swan song for Lingerman as baseball player, the book itself is not through taking some risks, such as being narrated from a revolving point of view. We hear about Lingerman's life from points of view ranging from that of the comic character Redman, a successful accountant with a proud "one-sixteenth" Lakota Sioux blood, whose own midlife identity crisis prompts him to quit his life and the team to try to return to his warrior forefathers to that of Brian, the ten-year-old son of Lingerman's occasional girlfriend Karen. Because dialogue is Manderino's real strength, this unusual technique works very well to enlarge our view of Hank's reality. (As the mother of a nine-year-old, I can vouch for the realism of Brian's speech and world view. The author's first novel

But when it came to playing with intensity and getting the most of what God had endowed him with, Nellie Fox was second to no one. Fox is the most famous Franklin Countian ever to wear the uniform of a major league baseball team. Nothing Fox got ever came easily. He had to work hard for everything he achieved during his major league career, most of which he spent as a magician at second base for the Chicago White Sox. "Self-made, all the way" was how Herb Score, former Cleveland Indians pitcher and broadcaster, described Fox. Fox wound up as a .288 hitter in 2,367 games and 9,232 at-bats covering all or part of every season between 1947 and 1965. He ranked second all-time among major leaguers in double plays at second base, third in fewest strikeouts per at-bat, putouts at second base and games at second base, and sixth in assists at second base. The great New York Yankee Whitey Ford, himself a Hall of Famer, once said Fox was nearly impossible to strike out.
