"Catch the Moment as the 1975 World Series hangs in the balance. Game 6 in Fenway Park is tied in the bottom of the 12th inning. Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk comes to the plate and belts a shot towards the infamous Green Monster in left field. This fantastic black and white photo captures Fisk coaxing the ball into fair territory before it clears the fence for the game-winning homer. The spectacular World Series moment comes wood framed, double matted and hand-signed by Boston’s baseball hero Carlton Fisk. A Steiner Sports Certificate of Authenticity is included."

    Pudge
The shortest stop on Carlton Fisk's route to the Hall of Fame was in South Bend. On May 26, 1992, Fisk, who was recovering from bone spur surgery, played a rehab game at Coveleski Stadium. Manager Terry Francona penciled the big league star in the White Sox' cleanup slot against Madison. Fisk rewarded 3,147 fans by leading the Sox to victory over the Muskies. In the first inning, Pudge took aim at the synagogue down the left field line and poked a long home run. Baserunners Glenn DiSarcina and Troy Fryman (brothers of big leaguers, both) scored ahead of Fisk, and SB never lost the lead. The visitor drew a walk in his next appearance, and hit a long fly center. This game was the highlight of the SBSox' season. The 1993 program had Fisk's picture on the cover, and the 1993 package tickets showed him, too. "Destined for the Hall of Fame," the game writeup said. It's come true....

    Quotes
"Few sights in baseball are as pure a joy to watch as a sleek, handsome, graceful pitcher with complete command of his art." Tom Boswell on Boddicker, Washington Post, May 16, 1984 "I struck out 14? No wonder my arm hurts." Mike Boddicker, quoted in the Washington Post after his playoff win over the White Sox on October 6, 1983 "[Hitters on their way back to the dugout] scream at me sometimes. They scream, 'Challenge somebody!' and things like that. I like that, I like to hear guys screaming at me, I like guys throwing their helmets in the dugout, or bats flying, or to hear crashing down there. That means you've got them." Mike Boddicker, quoted in The Boston Globe, September 10, 1988 Boddicker telling kids at a baseball clinic about going to hear Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk speak in 1976: "OK, I'm a kid just out of high school. After the program was over with, I went over to Carlton Fisk and I said to him, I said, 'Mr. Fisk, could I please have your autograph?' And he said, 'Yeah, sure kid,' and he signed it. And I said, 'Someday I hope to be able to pitch against you in the big leagues.' Carlton Fisk looked at me and he said, 'Yeah, right, kid.' And that hurt me. He didn't believe I could do it. So, I got to pitch against Carlton Fisk. Carlton Fisk, I think, has one hit, lifetime, off of me. I betcha I've struck him out 25 to 30 times."

    Carlton Fisk
    The Commander Unmasked
A consensus Hall-of-Famer, Carlton Fisk wears the scars of many a baseball battle. He was 1972's American League Rookie of the Year. He made baseball history in game six of the 1975 World Series with a dramatic 12th-inning home run. He owns the all-time homerun crown among catchers. And during the 1991 All-Star Game he became the oldest player to tally a hit in the midsummer classic. Like Fisk's 21-year career, this collection won't last forever. A certain Hall-of-Famer. Carlton Fisk's New Speechwriter
July 28, 2000 I had the distinct pleasure this past week of attending the game at Fenway Park where Carlton Fisk's number was retired. Being a Fisk fanatic, I also went to his Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in July. Both events consisted of a bunch of people in non-baseball suits giving speeches about how great everybody is, followed up by Fisk giving a speech about what a great game baseball is. Let me be the first to provide you with this breaking news story: jocks don't make good public speakers. While as a Fisk fan I was captivated, I must say objectively his heartfelt and personally-prepared remarks at both events weren't particularly brisk. They were, in short, non-informative speeches that would've been boring had I not idolized the speaker. In fairness to Carlton, such events are designed for gracious platitudes, not cutting criticism or inside-baseball dirt. That's why the Valedictorian gives the remarks at high school graduation, not the juvenile delinquents who had a more interesting set of experiences. Yet Carlton Fisk's career has a lot to say about baseball, and I was vaguely disappointed the Real Story wasn't revealed by these events. After all, Carlton's in the Hall, the Sox have retired his number, he can pretty much get away with anything he wants now.

    78. Baseball Diva Catchers
Thurman Munson and carlton fisk are tied together in baseball history, both comingto prominence as the catchers for baseball's greatest continuing rivalry
    http://www.acad.sunytccc.edu/instruct/wright/fields/BBDIVACATCHERS.HTM
    CATCHERS
"God looks after small children and catchers." Catchers are called the field generals of baseball because they run the game, selecting with or for the pitcher which pitches to throw when, and directing the defense, telling the fielders where to make the play. The catcher's equipment has been called the "tools of ignorance." In addition to the standard uniform worn by ballplayers, a catcher dons steel-toed shoes, shin guards that cover the front of his legs from mid-foot to the tops of the knees, a chest protector which covers most of the front of his torso and may include a hinged flap to protect one shoulder, a hard helmet, a face mask of leather-lined, padded metal and a oversized, thickly padded mitt. He must squat and stand repeatedly throughout the game and move quickly to field his position while wearing all this. The catcher is completely involved in the game: calling, receiving and returning every pitch thrown; backing up first and third; setting the defense; keeping baserunners from stealing; protecting the plate. No other player is as intently involved, not even the pitcher. And good catchers are thinking not only of the batter at the plate, but of who will be coming up in the next three to six at bats. A good catcher not only knows his team's defensive abilities, he knows his pitchers' capabilities and quirks, and he knows the hitting tendencies of the opposition's batters. "Catchers are the most beat-up, bruised, broken, knurled players on the field. They are the only athletes I know who can stick their hands out straight and point behind them." - Ron Luciano
