Hall of Fame induction 1992, 349/430 ballots cast (81.16%) Of all the men who have played for the Athletics over their 100+ year history, none is more recognizable than Rollie Fingers and his famed handlebar moustache. In many ways his moustache has become synonymous with the great Oakland A's teams which Rollie anchored as the Fireman in the bullpen. Two numbers have been retired by the Oakland Athletics and now grace the wall in left field, #27 Catfish Hunter and #34 Rollie Fingers. Rollie Fingers ushered in the era of the modern-day closer, using his physical durability, slider and devastating sinking fastball to compile 341 saves, setting a Major League record. Rollie molded the relief pitcher role into the closer, the pitcher relied on to finish out close games. However, it's hardly fair to compare Rollie to the modern-day closer, as Rollie routinely entered games in the 7th inning. In todays games, closers rarely go beyond 4 batters in order to save their arm strength. Rollies' baseball success started at a young age. He was voted the 1964 American Legion Player of the Year after leading the nation with a .450 batting average and taking his team to the National Championships in Little Rock, Arkansas. Rollie was signed by Art Lilly, at the time the West Coast scout for the Kansas City Athletics. His $13,000 signing bonus bought his mother a new sewing machine.

Home simplybaseballnotebook's archives Rollie Fingers Speaks Seventh in the 'COVER STORY' series. ROLLIE FINGERS SPEAKS David Zingler When Rollie Fingers entered the major leagues during the late 60s, 'bullpen' was a four-letter word to pitchers. If you weren't a starter, you were basically a failure. In the 30+ years since then, the bullpen has become an essential part of a winning team. Ask any manager where most playoff games are won or lost he will usually mention the bullpen right away. No one man has done more to change that perception than Rollie Fingers. He was the games' first dominant closer, the first to win the MVP, and the first to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. I caught up with the legendary reliever after an autograph signing at the Mall of America, and chatted about a variety of subjects.
Fingers, who will turn 56 in August, recently learned he was going to be a father for the fourth time. He currently lives in Las Vegas and does autograph signings to keep himself busy, "I do maybe six or seven autograph shows a year," he said. "I do a lot of private signings, corporate outings that sort of stuff."
Another passion of the former closer is golf. He is currently a three handicap and tours with the celebrity golf circuit which consists of about fifteen tournaments a year and raises money for charity.

Vida Blue had that great year (24-8, 1.82 ERA). We won like 102 games (actually 101), I think, and we won the league by (16) games, and we were just hot. Then all of a sudden we got into the playoffs, and we got (whipped) three in a row. But I think that was a good learning experience for us because it was the first time we were really in the playoffs, so we had a taste of it." On playing in Oakland: "It's fun when you win, and in Oakland we won five straight division titles, so that made for a fun time for five years when you're playing on a winner. It made it fun going into September knowing you've got a chance." On being the underdog vs. the Reds in the 1972 World Series:

Mike Reilly, the "Voice of the Ironman" introduced Paula for her Hall of Fame induction. Mike was in good company with the evening's emcee, Dick Enbergh (hope we spelled Dick's last name right).
Paula Newby-Fraser and Rollie Fingers are Inducted into San Diego's Hall of Fame
It happened back in February but it's still worth remembering here. On February 15th, 2000, the San Diego Hall of Champions held their annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Past winners and this year's inductees were present for the gala affair which inducted legendary pitcher, Rollie Fingers and triathlon legend Paula Newby-Fraser.
In her acceptance speech, Paula thanked the Hall of Champions for not only recognizing her but the sport of Triathlon. San Diego sports legends from tennis, baseball, wrestling, golf, football, etc., etc. were on hand and one of the funniest parts of the evening occurred when Paula mentioned that she was excited to have Padre outfielder and hitting king, Tony Gwynn join her for a week of training. Tony almost died on the spot and said, "Well, I'm not going to hear the end of that from the fellas."

by Bruce Markusen Previous Columns Mustache Gang - Presentation on the 1972 A's The following is an outline of Bruce Markusens presentation on the 1972 A's at the SABR Convention. It was a power-point presentation with visuals. Part One: Slide 1—Charlie Finley Slide: The 1972 World Champion Oakland A’s remain one of the most fascinating teams in major league history, in part because of the presence of this man, Charlie Finley, who served as both the team’s owner and general manager. In examining the 1972 A’s, there are three main themes that I would like to explore:
  • The role of the 1972 A’s as pioneers in baseball fashion
  • The whirlwind of player movement and trade activity—unprecedented for a pennant-winning team
  • The team’s difficult road to a championship: two tough opponents in the post-season and a series of hard-fought, one-run games
Dick Allen Slide: From 1915 to 1971, no player was documented to have worn a mustache in regular season play in MLB.

by Bruce Markusen Previous Columns Thirty Years Ago… Birth of the Mustache Gang Today’s major league players freely make bold fashion statements. Many players wear goatees. An increasing number of players wear earrings, some featuring more than one on each ear. And players have worn mustaches and beards for years. Such practices have become so commonplace that they might not seem newsworthy anymore. And why exactly did so few players dare to feature mustaches or beards during a half a century of baseball history? After all, no official major league rule had ever banned players from wearing facial hair. Yet, there did exist an unwritten rule in the conservative sport, one that that strongly frowned upon the mustachioed or bearded look. In addition, several individual teams instituted their own formal policies (most notably the Cincinnati Reds in the 1960s), policies that forbade their players from sporting facial hair. Oh, you want to grow a mustache or a beard. Go right ahead. And by the way, here’s the spot you’ll be occupying on the bench for the next several days.
