1964 Topps National League Strikeout Leaders

Another CLASSIC!! This 1964 Topps card shows Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale as they lead the league in K's in 1963. Talk about dominant pitching staff - these guys lead the Dodgers to an unheard of 4-game sweep of the once mighty Yankees in the 1963 World Series. League leader cards in general are undervalued. If you were to combine the price of these two superstar's regular cards from the 1964 Topps set, you'd be paying $120!! Here's your chance to get a card of two Hall of Famer's for a fraction of that price! This card is graded in near mint condition.

Career Pitching Record A 6-foot-6, 216-pound right-hander who could terrorize right-handed hitters with his sidearm fastball, Drysdale spent his entire 14-year major league career with the Dodgers. He joined them in 1956, when they were in Brooklyn, and went with them to Los Angeles in 1958. Drysdale led the league with 4 shutouts and 242 strikeouts in 1959 and was the strikeout leader again with 246 the following season. His finest year was 1962, when he won the Cy Young Award with a 25-9 record, 2.83 ERA, and 232 strikeouts in 314 innings, leading the league in victories, strikeouts, and innings pitched. He had only one other 20-victory season, a 23-12 mark in 1965, but undoubtedly would have had more if he'd pitched for a team that scored more runs than the weak-hitting Dodgers. Drysdale teamed with Sandy Koufax to form one of the best righty-lefty pitching combinations in history. He and Koufax staged a joint holdout after the 1965 season, asking for salaries of $175,000 apiece. At the time, only Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays earned more than $100,000. Drysdale finally signed for $110,000, while Koufax got $130,000. On May 14, 1968, Drysdale beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0. It was the beginning of a streak of 6 consecutive shutouts and 58 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings, breaking Walter Johnson's record of 56. (Drysdale's record was broken by another Dodger, Orel Hershiser, in 1988.)

BAD TO THE BONE
DON DRYSDALE
Dodger right-hander Don Drysdale combined a great arm with an ability to intimidate batters. Not only did the sidearming hurler knock down opposing batters, but he also plunked them with regularity. He led the National League in hit batsmen each year from 1958 through 1961. He also holds the NL career mark at 154. Frank Robinson once said, "He was mean enough to do it, and he did it continuously. You could count on him doing it. And when he did it, he just stood there on the mound and glared at you to let you know he meant it." Drysdale had learned from a master of aggressive pitching, Sal "the Barber" Maglie, who had learned how to pitch aggressively from former Giant great Adopho Luque. Convinced of the value of keeping hitters off balance, Drysdale hung around the veteran Maglie in Brooklyn when he was just starting. "What being around Maglie did for me," Drysdale explained, "was to confirm this idea in my mind and refine it. It was part of the game. I watched Maglie, I listened to Maglie, and it all sunk in. It just sort of clicked." Drysdale has his own code of pitching ethics. "My own little rule was two for one. If one of my teammates got knocked down, then I knocked down two on the other team." Drysdale showed so much promise that the Dodgers signed him right out of high school in 1954. Drysdale was 5-5 in 99 innings in 1956 and moved into the rotation the next season, going 17-9 in the Dodgers' last year in Brooklyn. In 1959 he led the NL in strikeouts, and repeated in 1960 and 1962. He he averaged 315 innings a season from 1962 through 1965.

WORLD SERIES
Los Angeles Dodgers
vs
Minnesota Twins
Game 1 at Met Stadium:
Behind the strong pitching of Twins 21-game winner Jim Grant, and homers by first baseman Mincher and MVP Versalles, the Twins win the opener 8-2 at Met Stadium. Ron Fairly's solo HR in the Dodger second is the first score of the series, but Mincher retaliates for the Twins in the bottom of the inning. Versalles' shot in the Twin's 6-run third K.O.s losing pitcher Don Drysdale, and Frank Quilici's 2 hits in the frame tie a World Series record.
Game 2 at Met Stadium: Next day on a rain-soaked field, 26-game winner Koufax matches zeros with Twins ace lefty Jim Kaat thru five innings. The greatest catch of the series is pulled off by leftfielder Bob Allison in the Dodger 5th with one one base. Jim Lefebvre's curving drive into the corner is grabbed, as Allison skids almost 20 feet across the foul line in wet grass and mud! Third baseman Jim Gilliam's error in the sixth opens the door for two Twin tallies, and Minnesota goes on to win 5-1. Leaving for Los Angeles with a 2-0 lead in the series and having just beaten Drysdale and Koufax on successive days, the Twins appear to be in good shape.
Game 3 at Dodger Stadium: A 5-hit 4-0 shutout by Dodger 15-game winner Claude Osteen stops the Twins momentum in the third game at Dodger Stadium. John Roseboro's two-run single in the fourth off starter Camilio Pascual is the big blow of the game.
