DiMaggio an American hero By Bob Kimball, USATODAY.com American icon Joe DiMaggio, who patrolled center field with grace and precision and won pennant after pennant with the New York Yankees, died Monday at his home in Hollywood, Fla.. The Yankee Clipper was 84 and had undergone surgery for lung cancer in October before developing pneumonia. A private funeral is scheduled for Thursday in the Hall of Famer's hometown of San Francisco. DiMaggio's impact on the Yankees, sports and American culture was dramatic following his arrival in New York in 1936. The Hall of Famer starred on four World Series winners in his first four major league seasons and wound up leading the Yankees to 10 American League titles and nine Series championships in 13 years. He became forever linked with consistent greatness in 1941 when he hit safely in 56 consecutive games, a record that most baseball observers believe is safe for all time. One of the great winners in history, DiMaggio surrendered three years in the middle of his playing career to military service. He was a true All-American boy. Fans might have hated the Yankees, but they always admired and even rooted for DiMaggio.

Monday, March 8, 1999; 9:31 a.m. EST Commissioner Bud Selig "All of baseball is deeply saddened by the passing of the Yankee Clipper, Joe DiMaggio. For several generations of baseball fans, Joe was the personification of grace, class and dignity on the baseball diamond. His persona extended beyond the playing field and touched all our hearts. In many respects, as an immigrant's son, he represented the hopes and ideals of our great country. "Joe DiMaggio was a hero in the truest sense of the word. I idolized him from afar as a chld growing up in Milwaukee. In later years, when I had the opportunity to become acquainted with him, my admiration grew. Being with him was an event, bringing on an air of excitement, anticipation and joy. "Major League Baseball offers its condolences not only to members of the family but to baseball fans everywhere."

    67. Baseball Hero Joe DiMaggio Dead -- 03/08/1999

Baseball Hero Joe DiMaggio Dead 08 March, 1999 By Bruce Sullivan
    CNS
    Staff Writer (CNS)
Simon and Garfunkle's lyrics "Joltin' Joe has left and gone away, hey, hey, hey," which they sang in their 60's tune, "Mrs. Robinson," poignantly contrasting that troubled decade with simpler times, when heroes like DiMaggio transcended ethnic, class, and gender lines, might make a fitting epitaph for the graceful outfielder.
DiMaggio was the epitome of the strong silent type, whose quiet dignity never permitted him to brag about his feats, such as his record 56-game hitting streak, one of the greatest records in sports.
Perhaps the closest the "Yankee Clipper" ever came to arrogance was his response a few years ago to a reporter's question of how much did he, a lifetime .325 slugger and three time MVP, think he would be worth in today's baseball market, where .250 hitters are millionaires? DiMaggio's top yearly salary was $100,000.
"I'd walk right up to the team owner, stick out my hand and say 'Hello, partner,'" said DiMaggio in a rare reference to his athletic talents.
The stoical DiMaggio was a quiet and reserved athlete, who kept his emotions to himself and maintained a serene dignity throughout his stellar baseball career. After his retirement from the Yankees in 1951 at the relatively young age of 37, DiMaggio became a corporate spokesman for numerous firms from banks to coffee makers.

    Joe DiMaggio

Born: November 25, 1914 He is a modern day American icon. An athlete with grace both on and off the field. He is one of the most popular men to ever play America's favorite pastime Joe DiMaggio. Joseph Paul DiMaggio was born in Martine, California on November 25, 1914. His two brothers, Dominic and Vincent, also played major league baseball. DiMaggio's baseball career began in 1932 with the Pacific Coast League. He played in San Francisco until 1936, when he was signed by the New York Yankees. He remained there until he retired in 1951. Mr. DiMaggio served the Yankees as one of the best outfielders ever to play the game. Nicknamed the "Yankee Clipper" for his superb fielding ability, DiMaggio also was a great offensive player as well. He set a major league record by establishing a 56 game hitting streak in 1941, which helped earn him the nickname "Joltin' Joe".

Joe DiMaggio Born: November 25, 1914
    Place: Martinez, California
    Died: March 8, 1999
Place: Hollywood, Florida J oe DiMaggio was born on November 25, 1914 on the coast of California in the fishing village of Martinez. The DiMaggio family had emigrated to the United States from Sicily in 1898. The family was large, and Joe grew up as one of eight brothers and sisters. In 1915 the DiMaggio's moved to San Francisco, and all the boys in the family were encouraged by their father to join him in his work as a fisherman. Mr. DiMaggio successfully convinced Joe's two older brothers to join him on the water, but Joe and his brothers Vince and Dominic just couldn't stay away from the sandlots. San Francisco sandlots were the place to play baseball. Mr. DiMaggio was not very thrilled with his sons' attraction to baseball over good honest work. Yet all three of these DiMaggio boys actually went on to play Major League baseball. Vince played professionally for eleven seasons, while his brother Dominic played ten seasons in the Majors. J oe had the edge when it came to natural talent, however. He was the star of the sandlots, and at 12 years old he was already slugging homeruns out of the park. Joe went to school, played in several informal leagues, and entered high school. School just wasn't where Joe's heart or head was, and he left high school after just one year. The San Francisco Seals, a minor league team, had their eye on Joe and took him on. He quickly showed his stuff, and was a standout player for the Seals. After a couple of seasons, the New York Yankees spotted him, and Joe's career in baseball took off.

Joe DiMaggio looks back over a career of accomplishments. Yet, he does not forget where he came from, nor do his fans. It is his storied past that intrigues so many. His Italian heritage that all immigrants identify with and try to emmulate. Joe DiMaggio personifies the validity of that ever elusive "American Dream" come true. His success at breaking into the world of baseball, a poor, uneducated son of an immigrant fisherman during the height of the depression is unbelievable to many, but, at the same time, a tangible experience for Americans everywhere in similar predicaments to look to for guidance. The fact that he made it to the major leageus was enough to make him the hero of the masses. Forget his incredible statistics, his "clipper-like" grace, his dignified pursuit of excellence on and off the field. Joe DiMaggio was a hero for those who so desperately wanted to believe in the beauty of the American Dream. There is a legend that claims Joe DiMaggio's father fought hard to keep his sons from playing baseball. He wanted his boys to get a good education and to make something of themselves. According to Tom DiMaggio, Joe's older brother, "He wanted us to make a good, honest living, so we could get away from the stuggle and the poverty we had as kids." Frank Venezia, Joe's childhood friend, remembers the great DiMaggio fondly. "Joe had a keen mind. He would have been good at anything he did. He just wasn't interested in school. I think part of it was he was afraid to talk in class. That probably came from his home. His parents were hermits. They didn't come out of the house much. Joe's parents only spoke Italian. But, I can't really tell you if Joe spoke Italian to his parents or what they spoke to him. Nobody around there could tell you, nobody ever got invited inside their house (Allen 24)."
