Joe DiMaggio has left a legacy that sets him apart as the classiest player of a peerless group of ballplayers in the history of the New York Yankees. Joe and his brothers Vince and Dom, hailing from the San Francisco area, made up the most famous trio of brothers ever to play baseball in the big leagues. Vince and Dom were effective players, but Joe had a special gift, playing as a Yankee in 10 World Series from 1936 to 1951. Nobody played baseball like Joe DiMaggio. As an 18-year-old player for the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League, he managed to get at least one hit in an astounding 61 consecutive games.

Where have you gone joe dimaggio?
Joseph Paul DiMaggio was born on November 25, 1914, in Martine, California, a fishing town north of San Francisco. Joseph was the eighth of nine children. His father was a fisherman, and assumed that all five of his sons would follow him into the fishing business. Fortunately, for the world of baseball and for America, that did not happen. In 1930, when young Joe was sixteen years old he dropped out of high school and got a job at a local bottling plant. Joe didn't like the work, so he moved on to become a dockworker. In 1932, Vince DiMaggio, Joe’s older brother, got his chance to play minor league baseball on the Pacific Coast League. The team needed a shortstop later in the season, and Vince suggested his younger brother. bodyOffer(32902) The following year, at the age of seventeen, the right-handed batter played professional baseball with the Seals. Within that year, he hit twenty-eight home runs, brought in 169 home runs, and had a sixty-one game hitting streak. In 1934, the Seals owner, Charlie Graham, sold Joe to the Yankees with twenty-five thousand dollars and five players. Graham knew a good thing when he saw it, though, and included a stipulation into the deal, Joe DiMaggio would spend the next season playing for him again.

The ball is signed by Joe (on the sweet spot), along with many of the pitchers who faced him during his incredible streak. Featured in "Baseball Letters" (Kodansha) Elden Auker, Denny Galehouse Al Milnar, Bob Feller Mel Harder Hal Newhauser More about the players on this ball: Joe DiMaggio was the greatest all-around player of his time (1936-42, 1946-51). A three-time MVP (1939, 1941, 1947), he will always be remembered for his graceful play and seemingly unbreakable 56-game hitting streak. Elden Auker won 130 games during his career (1933-1942), and went 18-7 for the Detroit Tigers in their championship year of 1935. Denny Galehouse, who won 109 games in his career (1934-44 and 1946-49), was a pitcher on the fabled, 1944, Pennant-winning St. Louis Browns. Al Milnar pitched for the Cleveland Indians and two other teams during an eight-year career (1936, 1938-43, 1946).

Joe DiMaggio's 56 Game Hit Streak Comes To An End In 1941, Joe DiMaggio got a hit in an incredible 56 consecutive games. It is a record many think will stand for all time. In the 56th game, Cleveland Indian, 3rd baseman, Kenny Keltner made two fabulous stops on hot DiMaggio smashes. Keltner and DiMaggio, forever linked in baseball history, both signed the sweetspot of this ball. In the panel below the sweetspot, Keltner wrote,
"I got a police escort out of the stadium

Baseball legend DiMaggio dies

Joe DiMaggio - an icon of American sport
Brian Barron looks back at Joe DiMaggio's life
Joe DiMaggio, one of the most famous figures in American sporting history, has died at the age of 84. The ex-New York Yankees baseball star and former husband of Marilyn Monroe had been suffering from lung cancer. The news was announced by DiMaggio's lawyer and friend for 59 years, Morris Engelberg, who had joined family and friends at the sporting legend's bedside at his home in Florida. "DiMaggio, the consummate gentleman on and off the field, fought his illness as hard as he played the game of baseball and with the same dignity, style and grace with which he lived his life," Engelberg said. He underwent surgery for lung cancer last October but suffered further complications and struggled to recover. DiMaggio was released from Florida's Memorial Regional Hospital last month after a 99-day stay that had been remarkable for the extent of press and TV coverage of his condition. He will be buried in San Francisco.

Joe DiMaggio
The son of a fisherman, Joe DiMaggio is considered one of the most memorable baseball players of all time. For many of the fans who saw him play, he epitomizes grace and excellence. His play, his demeanor and his short marriage to Marilyn Monroe helped make him one of the icons of American pop culture.
DiMaggio played for the New York Yankees from 1936 until 1951. Babe Ruth started the tradition of winning, but DiMaggio, with his high standards and leadership, took his New York Yankees team to the World Series ten times, leading them to nine championships.
While America was on the brink of World War II, DiMaggio set a record that gripped the entire nation: he got at least one hit in 56 straight games. That 1941 record captured the attention of ordinary Americans, as fans all over the nation checked their radios and asked each other, "Did he get a hit?" The record is one of the most hallowed achievements in baseball history.
DiMaggio’s skills were much-lauded in his day, and he was voted the American League’s most valuable player three times. Fans and writers called him "Joltin’ Joe" because of his hard hitting. He was also dubbed "the Yankee Clipper" because of his graceful fielding in Yankee Stadium’s vast center field.
His lifetime batting average was .325 and he hit 361 home runs in his career. He also hit 131 triples, 389 doubles, and was involved in 4,529 put-outs in the outfield. In 1954 DiMaggio was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Online Poll: Great Feats in Baseball
Baseball fans measure greatness with numbers. Rogers Hornsby did not merely have a great year in 1924; he hit .424. Atlanta's Hank Aaron didn't just have a stellar baseball career; he stroked exactly 755 home runs.
Fans use these numbers as evidence to argue: Who was the greatest player of all time? When were the most amazing one-day performances? What are the most Herculean baseball records? Numbers fuel all sides of the debate.
DiMaggio's record 56-game hitting streak stands as one of baseball's magical numbers. Now it's your turn to decide: Is DiMaggio's feat in 1941 the most impressive record of baseball's modern era? Below we have included some other near-miraculous records of power, consistency, and brilliance from baseball's modern period. Read about each one and then rank them yourself. We'll keep a running tally of your choices.

Joe DiMaggio: A Yankee You Couldn't Help But Admire
by Bob George
The nice thing about the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is that there is a human side to it all. It's a sure thing that you the baseball fan have seen the famous clip from Lou Gehrig Day at Yankee Stadium in 1939. Diagnosed with the fatal disease amytrophic lateral sclerosis, he stood there, stoically and confidently, and proclaimed to the world that he was "the luckiest man on the face of the earth." You sit and watch Gehrig, know that he's dying, know that he knows he's dying, and the last thing on your mind is that "Ewww, he's a Yankee!" while you shed a tear or ten. Every Red Sox fan was still feeling the sting of the 1978 collapse on August 2, 1979. On that day, the Yankees had the day off, and Thurman Munson decided to take his plane up for a spin near his Canton, Ohio home. Munson did not survive the flight. The ceremony the following night at Yankee Stadium was sadly classic as Reggie Jackson and Luis Tiant wept openly during an eight-minute standing ovation. This Yankee hater watched every minute and grieved for Munson and his family. We want to kill the Yankees, but only on the ball field, not in real life. Now, the Yankee Clipper has completed his final voyage. Joe DiMaggio has died at age 84, finally succumbing to complications from lung cancer. Yankee Nation has responded as it should, with moments of silence, sound bytes and arm patches. But DiMaggio was the kind of ball player whose passing causes every baseball fan worldwide to pause, bow their heads and deal with the full impact of the loss of an American treasure.
