Joe DiMaggio
Joe DiMaggio Joseph Paul DiMaggio Joe DiMaggio is remembered as one of the game's most graceful athletes — a "picture player" both at bat and in center field. Many rate his 56-consecutive-game hitting streak in 1941 as the top baseball feat of all time. "The Yankee Clipper" used an unusually wide stance in winning two batting championships and three MVP awards. In 13 seasons he amassed 361 homers, averaged 118 RBI annually and compiled a .325 lifetime batting mark. At Baseball's 1969 Centennial Celebration, he was named the game's greatest living player. Did you know ... that in 1933, eight years before his famed 56-game hitting streak, Joe DiMaggio fashioned a 61-game hitting streak with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League? Web Posted: Monday, March 8, 1999; 9 a.m. EST Joe DiMaggio shows off a set of World Series rings at Yankee Stadium before the last game of the '98 season. The Yankees replaced his set of World Series rings, which were stolen. (AP) Joe DiMaggio, the fabled slugger and centerfielder of the New York Yankees whose superlative play on the baseball field enshrined him in the hearts of sports fans everywhere and made him a universal symbol of athletic grace and excellence, died at his home in Hollywood, Fla., shortly after midnight, said Morris Engelberg, DiMaggio's long-time friend and attorney. The Associated Press reported that his brother Dominick, two grandchildren and Joe Nacchio, his friend for 59 years, and Engelberg were at his side when he died. DiMaggio's body will be flown to Northern California for burial in his home town of San Francisco, Engelberg told the AP. "DiMaggio, the consummate gentleman on and off the field, fought his illness as hard as he played the game of baseball and with the same dignity, style and grace with which he lived his life,'' the AP quoted Engelberg, DiMaggio's next-door neighbor.

Where Have You Gone Joe DiMaggio? "...it's our game; that's the chief fact in connection with it : America's game; has the snap, go, fling, of the American atmosphere; it belongs as much to our own institutions, fits into them as significantly, as our constitution's laws; is just as important in the sum total of our historic life"-Walt Whitman Joltin' Joe DiMaggio the hero that unified America. The Italian immigrant who followed America's golden paved road to greatness, playing America's game in America's most famous city, on America's most storied team, married to America's most beloved movie star.
DEFINING AMERICAN HEROISM The American public, searching for heroes in the decades of Depression and war, found in Joe DiMaggio an ideal image of itself. What is it about DiMaggio that allowed him to transcend his sport and his time to secure his place in American mythology? Why did the American public at the time yearn for such a hero Has America lost the idealism that pervaded Joe DiMaggio's time What kind of heroes do we want today?

    8. Say Hey, Kid!
For years, joe dimaggio held the title of baseball's greatest living player. As of 8 March that was no longer possible, so the Denver Post surveyed explayers, managers, and sportswriters to anoint a successor. Their choice Willie Mays. While a quick look at the stats is impressive (the Giants outfielder was the ultimate five-tool player He could hit, hit for power, run, field, and throw), many believe what separated Mays from the others was his sheer baseball intelligence. In topping the survey, the Say Hey Kid beat out some pretty fair competition Hank Aaron, Ted Williams, and Sandy Koufax, in that order. Wired News

That night, Dom came over to my place for dinner. I remember letting him in the door and then not speaking to him until we were almost done eating. I was that mad." When baseball mattered the most, no one mattered as much as Joe DiMaggio By Dave Kindred
The Sporting News The death of the Yankee Clipper is a jolt to a nation that reveled in his talent, his grace and his majestic presence
To say aloud the man's name ... Joe DiMaggio ... is to see the world as it was, to see it in black and white, to see a strong man hidden in an old baseball uniform, so much flannel there it's flapping, NEW YORK across the grays, the entwined NY on the pinstriped whites. Say the name aloud ... Joe DiMaggio ... and you hear in its gliding rhythms the music of a time when baseball mattered the most and when the player who mattered the most was the graceful, stylish, silent son of an Italian immigrant fisherman named Giuseppe DiMaggio. Say the god's name aloud and you know, if you know anything, the truth of what the rapscallion/second baseman Billy Martin said of DiMaggio: "When he walked into the clubhouse, it was like some senator or president walking in there." Only, in DiMaggio's case, presidents invited him to dinner. Time magazine put him on the cover. He married Marilyn Monroe. Willie Mays said he wanted to grow up to be DiMaggio. Ask Pete Rose his age, he says, "Born the year of DiMaggio's streak."

Remembering the Yankee Clipper: Joe DiMaggio

    by Harvey Frommer
    Joseph Paul DiMaggio
was one of nine children of a fisherman father who had emigrated from Sicily. It was all planned for Joe to become a fisherman like his father, but Joe could not abide the smell of fish and he often got seasick. His real passion was playing baseball. In 1934, he was playing baseball about as well as it could be played when his contract with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League was purchased by the Yankees. The deal contained the clause that the graceful outfielder be allowed to play one more season for the seals. His 1935 season gave the people of San Francisco something to remember - he batted .398, recorded 270 hits, and drove in 154 runs. Permission was granted for DiMag in 1936 to drive cross-country with fellow San Franciscans Tony Lazzeri and Frank Crosetti to the Yankee spring training camp in St. Petersburg, Florida. Lazzeri turned to DiMaggio after the trio had concluded one day of driving and said, "You take over, Joe."

Joe was the best, the very best I ever saw." Stan Musial Joe DiMaggio became an American hero at a time when Americans had little to feel heroic about. He was an American idol when America struggled with idealism. This wonderful ballplayer exhibited grace and class in a game that less than two decades prior had been blemished by a gambling scandal. PETE ROSE
Pete Rose Chases Joe DiMaggio It was a midsummer night in 1978, June 14 th to be exact, when baseball’s best hitter began his assault on the greatest single-season record in baseball history. No man had seriously challenged Joe DiMaggio ’s 56-game hitting streak in the 37 years since he had set it in 1941. No man had ever had the consistency - the drive - the will to get a hit every day. Not until Pete Rose that is. It was in Cincinnati on June 14 th that Rose singled in the first inning off Dave Roberts of the Cubs. Quietly his streak grew, as all streaks do.
