RECAP BOX SCORE GAME LOG ATLANTA (ESPN.com news services) The Team of the Decade has begun to show signs of decay. The Atlanta Braves are playing the final days of the 1990s with a style reminiscent of their futility at the start of the decade. Scott Brosius lines an RBI single to center off Kevin Millwood in the first inning. They are doing it in the national spotlight of the World Series. And it doesn't look as if there is anything Atlanta manager Bobby Cox can do about it.

    Boston Red Sox pitcher
In a career bordered on either side by extended stays with each of the two New York franchises, David Cone switched uniforms four times between 1992 and 1995. Blown by the winds of the pennant races, Cone became a hired gun for teams with World Series dreams, a rent-an-ace who instantly elevated a pitching staff and who earned a reputation as a big game starter.
Cone was a batter's worst nightmare, some nights needing only his 90+ MPH fastball to dominate an opposing lineup. His real strength, however, lay in his command of an array of pitches and his ability to throw them at a variety of speeds. At any point in an at-bat Cone was capable of pinpointing a cut fastball, slider, curve, changeup, or his lethal split-finger, which he used as his out pitch. At times he seemed able to invent pitches on the spot when the situation demanded. "David knows how to get guys out even when his arm feels like crap," said Yankee teammate Tino Martinez. "Sometimes, his stuff looks terrible out there, but he keeps putting zeroes on the scoreboard." With such a deadly arsenal at his disposal, Cone led the major leagues in strikeouts three straight years from 1990 to 1992. On September 10th, 1991 he tied a National League record (since broken by Kerry Wood) when he fanned nineteen Philadelphia Phillies in a nine-inning game.
In addition to his pitching success, Cone's mischievous manner and engaging personality made him a favorite with both fans and the press. More than a few fans dubbed themselves "Coneheads" and showed up at Shea Stadium wearing the cones of the eponymous Saturday Night Live characters. During the 1994 baseball strike, Cone became one of the players union's most active and visible members, testifying before Congress in January of 1995 against baseball's Antitrust Exemption. Describing his union ties, Cone said, "I guess it kind of stemmed from my father. He was a union guy working for the meat plant down in Kansas City. He was a union guy, and I guess it was just in my blood."

      Rabbi Gurdin's Sermon
      July 23, 1999 Parashat V'etchanan
Did you see what David Cone did last weekend? David Cone... Do you recognize the name? Maybe you're thinking he's a nice Jewish boy who recently moved to town. Nope. David Cone (spelled C-O-N-E) is a pitcher for the New York Yankees. He's been one of baseball's best pitchers for several years now. Last weekend, David Cone made baseball history. He pitched a perfect game. In a regular nine-inning baseball game, a team will record a total of 27 outs (3 per inning / 9 innings). In a perfect game, the pitcher does so well, that the opposing team never reaches first base safely. No hits, no walks, no errors. Just 27 batters all of them recording outs. Perfect games are very rare in Major League Baseball. There have been only 14 in the modern era of the Major Leagues. At the age of 36, last weekend, David Cone was the second oldest pitcher to ever achieve such an accomplishment. When I learned of David Cone's really remarkable accomplishment, I was immediately reminded of another great game that he pitched... three years ago at this time of the year. It was that game that inspired me to be a David Cone fan.   The story actually began in May of 1996, during the first weeks of that season. Cone was pitching, and he noticed a numbness in his pitching arm. An examination revealed an aneurysm. David Cone's career... and his life were in genuine jeopardy. Immediately, he underwent surgery. And then he began four long months of recovery and rehabilitation.

Each time, in each city in which he has played, he has won over local fans with his brilliant performances on the mound, and his class off the mound. For A PITCHER'S STORY

'A Pitcher’s Story: Innings with David Cone' by Roger Angell New baseball books cover a wide field of subjects Sunday, May 13, 2001 By Bob Hoover, Post-Gazette Book Editor A Pitcher’s Story: Innings with David Cone By Roger Angell Warner Books
Among Roger Angell’s duties during his many years at The New Yorker has been covering baseball, mostly the Gotham teams, although he did a sensitive piece on the travails of Pirate pitcher Steve Blass some years ago. Pitching has been a favorite Angell subject, hence this account of David Cone, a 16-year veteran who’s pitched for both the Mets and the Yankees. In 1999, he threw a perfect game for the Yanks against Montreal. The next year, he won only four and lost 14. Angell admired Cone for his competitive spirit and intelligence; Cone was secure enough in himself to allow the writer to tag along at various times in his baseball year.

For the four decades he's been writing about baseball for The New Yorker , Roger Angell has led all shortlists of the game's most astute and elegant chroniclers. With A Pitcher's Story: Innings with David Cone , he attempts, with thrilling command, something he's never tried beforedevoting a whole volume to one player by spending an entire season at his heels. In pitcher David Cone, a cerebral student of his game and articulate practitioner of his craft, Angell finds a subject as perfect as the perfecto Cone hurled against the Expos on Yogi Berra Day at Yankee Stadium in 1999. Better still, he finds in Cone a partner unwilling to shrink beneath the hot light of what would prove to be an agonizing and introspective year. One of the game's premier pitchers, Cone came unglued in 2000; his 4-14 season was a disaster. The "wizardly old master" Angell had intended to extol was suddenly "Merlin falling headlong down the palace stairs." There's gold to be spun from that, though, and Angell, the essayist as deft alchemist, spins away. The more Cone strugglesthe more he battles age, doubt, injury, and the various curves baseball fate can throwto regain what he's lost, the more valiant he seems. It gives

Account Info Baseball Mets' Cone Feels Comfortable on Mound Associated Press David Cone found himself in a comfortable setting Friday: back on the mound, back in a familiar place. Cone threw for five minutes, a day after signing a minor league contract with the New York Mets. It was the first time Cone had thrown off a mound since he pitched for the Boston Red Sox in 2001. "It was a lot different," Cone after spending the last 10 days playing catch on flat ground at home. "The first big test is to throw off a mound in front of people." Cone was joined by several other New York pitchers in the bullpen at the far side of the Mets' spring training complex that opened in 1988. It was an area that the 40-year-old Cone knew well. "I was here when this place was born," Cone said. "It brings back a lot of memories." Cone said the last time he threw so many pitches was when he was with the Red Sox, and he braced himself for a few aches and pains that will come Saturday morning. "Even though it was only five minutes, it felt real good," Cone said. "Tomorrow and the next day are the real keys."

    David Cone Hurls Perfect Game
    Jersey worn by Cone during
his perfect game After veteran right-hander David Cone pitched the 16th perfect game in major league annals-and the first in the history of regular season inter-league play-on July 18, 1999, he donated his New York Yankees jersey to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum's collection. In shutting down the youthful Montreal Expos, Cone didn't reach a single three-ball count on any batter and required a total of only 88 pitches. With his 6-0 inter-league masterpiece, Cone became the second Yankee in the last year to throw a perfect game at Yankee Stadium, joining former teammate David Wells as the only two Yankee pitchers to hurl perfect games in the Stadium's regular season history. Prior to the performances by Cone and Wells, the last perfect game in the Bronx had been tossed by Don Larsen during the 1956 World Series. In an intriguing coincidence, Larsen happened to be at Yankee Stadium the day of Cone's perfect game. Larsen, who threw out the ceremonial first pitch as part of "Yogi Berra Day" festivities, watched the historic game from a luxury box at the Stadium. The timing of Larsen's visit to Yankee Stadium was not lost on Cone. "All the Yankee legends [are] here today," Cone told reporters in the clubhouse, where Larsen congratulated him after the game. "It makes you stop and think about the Yankee magic and the mystique of this ballpark."
