42. The Baseball Career Of Ty Cobb
of the standards for the game in the early 20th century. The baseballcareer of ty cobb. Just how good with the bat was ty cobb?
http://fl.essortment.com/tycobb_rugl.htm
The baseball career of Ty Cobb
Just how good with the bat was Ty Cobb? There was once a story that during a game, the opposing team was heckling Cobb while he was at the plate. Cobb hit the first pitch foul, right into the visitors dugout. He did the same thing on the second pitch...and the third pitch...seven consecutive times he shot the ball at his hecklers. Needless to say, the heckling stopped. Ty Cobb began his big league career in 1905 at the age of 19. Cobb once admitted that he was far from being a great athlete, but that he was so good because of his strong desire to win. That desire made him a very unlikable person among many other major league players, as he often slid into bases with his cleats high and was hostile toward everyone who crossed his path. bodyOffer(20717) Ironically, despite that winning desire, Cobb never won a World Series in his 24-year career. But he did hold almost every batting and base-running record after his retirement. He won 10 batting crowns, and still holds the record for career batting average at .366. He led the league five times in runs scored, four times in RBI, eight times in slugging percentage, and six times in on-base percentage. He’s third in history in stolen bases with 892, and second to Pete Rose in hits with 4191. Cobb played for Detroit through most of his career, including player-manager for the Tigers in 1926. He signed for a brief time with the Philadelphia Athletics and retired after the 1928 season. “The Georgia Peach” was a member of the first class of inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936, receiving 222 of a possible 226 votes.

Ty Cobb
By: Hank H.
Tyrus Raymond Cobb was born on December 18, 1886 in Northern Georgia. Ty’s dad was William H. Cobb and his mom was Amanda Chitwood Cobb. Ty’s brother was born two years later and a sister six years later. Ty did not like school at all because it kept him from playing baseball, and because of this he did poorly. Ty’s father was a prominent man in town and Ty wanted to impress his father, but he could not find anything that interested him besides baseball. He tried farming, being a doctor, being a lawyer, and even growing cotton, but nothing came of these pursuits. So Ty chose baseball as a career.
Ty tried out for a team in Georgia but he was cut. Then Ty found another job in Alabama, but at the age of 16 had to ask for his father’s permission. His father gave his consent, but said "Don’t come home a failure", and with that motivation Ty went to Alabama. There he was at first unnoticed, but slowly gained some recognition as a player . After the end of that year he went back to Georgia to play for the Reds, a minor league team. After a year with the Reds, Ty was drafted to the major league Detroit Tigers.
Cobb’s first year in the majors he hit .240, the only year he didn’t hit over .300. After that, Cobb went on to win numerous batting titles and two cars for two of those batting titles. While playing for the Tigers, Cobb’s dad was shot and killed by his mother because she mistook him for a robber. Cobb also enlisted in the US Army in 1915 but two years later returned to baseball. After 19 seasons with the Tigers, Cobb became the manager. He managed them to two pennants. After that he came back and played two more years with the A’s.

http://baseballguru.com/omi/ty_cobb.htm
ONE MORE INNING ALL GAME LONG CLAUDE LEUKER HAD BEEN GIVING TY COBB THE BUSINESS. HE HAD TALKED ABOUT HIS HITTING ABILITY AND HOW TERRIBLE A FIELDER HE WAS AND WHAT A MORON HE WAS IN REAL LIFE AND HE THREW IN SOME RACIAL SLURS GRABBED LEUKER AROUND THE NECK, SMASHED HIM TO THE GROUND AND PROCEEDED TO BEAT THE HECK OUT OF HIM. BEFORE ORDER WAS RESTORED THE WHOLE TIGER TEAM RUSHED INTO THE STANDS IN SUPPORT OF COBB. FANS AND PLAYERS PUMMEL-ED EACH OTHER AROUND, WITH SOME ROUGH IT WOULD LEAD TO BIGGER THINGS. THE NEXT TWO DAYS WOULD PROVE TO BE CRUCIAL ONES FOR THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL IN GENERAL, AND WOULD DEV- ELOP INTO CHANGES IN THE WAY THE GAME WOULD BE PLAYED IN THE FUTURE. BY THE WAY, WHEN A FAN POINTED OUT TO COBB THAT LEUKER WAS DISABLED AND HAD NO ARMS, COBB REPLIED THAT HE WOULD BEAT HIM UP EVEN IF HE HAD NO LEGS AS WELL. THE MEDIA HAD A FIELD DAY WITH THIS. T h e s uspensio n g am e AN ARTICLE FROM THE MONTHLY BASEBALL MAGAZINE ONE MORE INNING History gives us some wonderful stories that last through the years, ending up as mythic folklore. That was true on May 18, 1912. Nonentities who would never have been known to us were given their moment of glory, at least in terms of baseball lore. Philadelphia feasted. Led by Eddie Collins 5-6, their hitting included Amos Strunk 3-6, Stuffy McInnis and Hal Maggert 3-4. Jack Coombs was the winner and former Yankee great and future Hall of Famer Herb Pennock pitched three scoreless innings.

Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.

BAD TO THE BONE
TY COBB
Ty Cobb ranks as one of Baseball's greatest players, if not the game's fiercest competitor. Everyone knows about his batting records! a lifetime batting average of .367, 4,191 hits, 12 batting titles, three .400 seasons, 892 career stolen bases, including a then record 96 steals in 1915.
Ty Cobb grew up in the post Civil War South where racism was the norm. This is not to say that it was right, but it was a given and accepted practice. What shaped Tys' personality more than anything was an incident that happened when he was just 18, just a few sparse weeks before he joined the Tigers.
His mother fatally shot his father outside her bedroom window. It was thought that she mistook him for a burglar, others whispered that he suspected her of infidelity. Either way, the killing of a Father who he dearly loved and admired spurred Cobb to become the fiercest competitor in baseball history.
The Georgia Peach hit .300 or better every year from 1906 to 1928 and won the AL batting championship every year from 1907 to 1915 and from 1917 to 1919. Some revisionist historians deprive him of his greatness, saying that he would not be able to achieve the same level of aggression and greatness in today's Baseball World. One must remember that if Ty Cobb were playing today he would have the same advantages in training that today's players have.
While it is almost never ever mentioned, it is a fact that Ty did have many friends in baseball as well as away from the game. Hardly anyone knows that one of Tys' best friends in the sport was none other than Christy Mathewson! Ty loved and admired "Big Six", visiting with him whenever he got the chance. He even went out of his way to serve with him in the Chemical Warfare Unit (also known as the Gas and Flame Division) during World War 1. When Mathewson died in 1925, it was said that Cobb broke down in tears.

Tyrus Raymond (Ty) Cobb Born: December 18, 1886
Place: Narrows, Georgia
Died: July 17, 1961
Place: Atlanta, Georgia T I n 1936 Ty Cobb was one of the first five players to be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Cobb's career was not without controversy, however. His rough and tumble nature, his stubborness, and his fiery temper all contributed to colorful and sometimes contentious relations with other players, umpires, family, and the press. But he certainly was one of baseball's greatest. Ty Cobb died in Atlanta, Georgia on July 17, 1961 N ot long before he died, Cobb enlisted a young writer, Al Stump, to work with him to create his autobiography. Stump worked by Ty Cobb's side for months and released My Life in Baseball: The True Record . This work is largely considered to be a whitewash of Ty Cobb's baseball career. According to Stump himself, Ty Cobb's editing and revisions to the autobiography were extensive and bent the truth substantially. Interestingly, Stump returned years later to the subject of Ty Cobb, and this time decided to write the complete Cobb story, including Cobb's influence on the first autobiography, all without the forceful Ty Cobb looking over his shoulder. The result is the highly acclaimed Cobb: A Biography . You may click on either title to purchase from Amazon.com. HOME INTRO SYMBOLS ALMANAC ... NETSTATE.STORE

From Horn Book
Illustrated with black-and-white and color photographs and drawings, these two easy readers tell the stories of famous sluggers like Honus Wagner, Babe Ruth, and Ted Williams (including a page of stats for each hitter) and, in more depth, of the remarkable but unpleasant Ty Cobb. The sentences are appropriately short, but too choppy; Ty Cobb is written entirely in the present tense, which is meant to lend immediacy to the account but is merely irritating. This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Book Description
Veteran sports writer S. A. Kramer recounts the on-the-field triumphs and
off-the-field troubles of the tormented "Georgia Peach," perhaps the most hated
man ever to play baseball.

Ty Cobb
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Tyrus Raymond "Ty" Cobb December 18 July 17 ), also known as "The Georgia Peach", was an American baseball player considered to be the greatest player of the "Deadball Era" (1900-1920), and perhaps of all time. He was the first player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame , in 1936.
Ty Cobb, 1909
(from cigarette package) Born in Narrows Georgia , Cobb had a strong well-respected father as a role model, but his mother shot his father dead one night as his father was entering the house by a window. Some thought the killing an accident, with Mr. Cobb mistaken for a deadly intruder. Others whispered that Mrs. Cobb had taken a lover, and killed her husband to avoid being caught with him. Either way, the killing was traumatic for young Ty Cobb (18 years old at the time). Some of the fanatical intensity he brought to baseball may have been linked to that killing. Cobb was disliked widely by the press and opponents, and today is remembered for his violent behavior off the field and for his racist attitudes. Even those who disliked him personally acknowledged his skill as a player, however.
