Career Batting Record Some consider Cobb the greatest baseball player ever. He was certainly the most feared and most disliked. He played as if driven by demons. Hughie Jennings, who managed him for several years, said of Cobb, "When he was in his prime, he had half the American League scared stiff." Rube Bressler, who played against him, described Cobb as "the most feared man in the history of baseball." Cobb once announced, "I would cut the heart out of my best friend if he ever tried to block the road." His apparent hatred for the world and almost everyone in it probably stemmed, at least in part, from his father's tragic death in 1905. Suspecting his wife of infidelity, W. H. Cobb climbed a ladder to look into her bedroom window one night and Mrs. Cobb shot and killed him. She was tried for voluntary manslaughter but won acquittal, testifying that she had mistaken her husband for an intruder. Cobb, who was very close to his father, saw his mother only occasionally after that and didn't attend her funeral. On August 30 of that year, Cobb joined the AL's Detroit Tigers. From the beginning, he refused to room with anyone, ate his meals alone, and rarely spoke to any of his teammates off the field. But even the opponents who feared him soon had to respect his skills as a hitter and base-runner.

Alexander (Paperback - May 1985) Ty Cobb (Baseball Legends) by Norman L. MacHt, Jim Murray (Introduction) (Library Binding - December 1992) My Life in Baseball : The True Record by Ty Cobb, et al One of sports literature's great whitewashes and cover-ups, Ty Cobb's autobiography is anything but the "true record" of its titular claim. Cobb was as haunted and complex a man as has ever sharpened a pair of spikes, and, in his 70s, when he sat down to tell his story, he simply didn't want the whole of his truth revealed; he preferred to perpetuate his legend. What results, then, is a flawed fairy tale filled with colorful anecdotes and reminiscences that duck the demons that fueled Cobb's inspired play like a pitcher trying to hide from a line drive smashed in the direction of his eyeballs. Interestingly, the story behind the book is far more raucous and compelling than the book itself. Cobb, as violent and demanding at the end of his life as he was in his playing heyday, virtually kidnapped Stump (one of the most honored sports writers of the late '50s and early '60s), subjecting almost every word and observation to Cobb's approval. Stump finally exacted his literary pound of flesh years later when he slid spikes high into Cobb's ghost with the publication of his marvelously richand realaccounting of Cobb's life in

The BASEBALL RELIQUARY Inc Nicknamed "The Georgia Peach", Tyrus Raymond Cobb was one of the greatest ballplayers of all time. He was also mean, vindictive, selfish, vain, paranoid, a bully, and a racist in short, one of the game's most badly disturbed personalities. Despite the enormity of his statistical accomplishments on the ballfield, he had few friends in the game. And when he died, only three baseball people showed up at the funeral. Ty Cobb

Georgia Peach earned a reputation as one of baseball's meanest competitors and most-gifted onfield stars One of the greatest tributes to the ability of Ty Cobb rests in the the fact that, when he retired after the 1928 season, he held 90 major records in professional baseball. Cobb's ability, as great as it was, often played second fiddle to his reputation as one of the toughest players to ever take the field. One of the funnier incidents attributed to Cobb comes when an interviewer asks Cobb how he would hit under the baseball conditions of the late 1950s. Cobb replied, "Oh, I'd hit .310, .315!" The interviewer asked Cobb why he would only hit .310. Cobb replied, "I'm 72 years old now!" Another of the stories attributed to Ty Cobb tells of how he got tired of answering questions about Babe Ruth and his abilites to hit home runs. Cobb told reporters that it didn't take any special skills to hit home runs. Cobb then slid his hands down on his bat and hit 3 home runs in the game. The next day, he hit 2 more. When Cobb became a Detroit Tiger in 1905, he was just 18 years old. That first season, a nervous Cobb only hit .240 in 150 at bats. Two years later, Cobb hit .350 and won the league batting title. Cobb would win 12 batting titles still a record in his baseball career. That 1907 batting title was also the first of Cobb's nine batting titles in a row also a record. Cobb had 30 outfield assists in 1907, led the league in assists in 1908, and finished his career second all-time in assists and double plays among outfielders.

On July 18 , 1927, Ty Cobb recorded his 4,000th career hit. Cobb finished out his Major League Baseball career in 1929 with a grand total of 4,191 hits. Cobb stood as the all-time hit leader until his total was surpassed by Pete Rose.

Cobb began his professional career at the age of eighteen with the Detroit Tigers with which he played twenty-two of his twenty-four seasons. Like the careers of baseball greats Pete Rose and "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, Cobb's was marred by scandal. He was allowed to resign in 1926 in lieu of being banned for alleged gambling violations. However, Cobb was subsequently exonerated and reinstated by baseball's first commissioner, Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis. Cobb, born in Narrows, Georgia and nicknamed "The Georgia Peach," was known for his temper as well as for his outstanding athletic ability. He stole home fifty times, won twelve batting average titles, and managed the Detroit Tigers for six seasons while also playing center field. His lifetime batting average was .367. Cobb made use of his reputation as an aggressive (often dirty) base runner to intimidate infielders, stealing 892 bases during his professional career. Ty Cobb was elected to the
