Ty Cobb may have been baseball's greatest player, if not the game's fiercest competitor. His batting accomplishments are legendary — a lifetime average of .367, 297 triples, 4,191 hits, 12 batting titles (including nine in a row), 23 straight seasons in which he hit over .300, three .400 seasons (topped by a .420 mark in 1911), and 2,245 runs. Intimidating the opposition, "The Georgia Peach" stole 892 bases during a 24-year career, primarily with the Detroit Tigers. Did you know ... that on May 5, 1925, Ty Cobb collected 16 total bases (three home runs, a double and two singles), setting a single-game American League record that has yet to be surpassed? Ty Cobb's Memoirs, edited by William R. Cobb
Ty Cobb. The Georgia Peach. I have been fascinated by Ty Cobb and the things that he did both on and off the field for several years now, and I do not pretend to be unbiased. If it seems that I have not presented a balanced view of Cobb and his activities, it is because I don't think I can present a balanced view. However, this does not mean that I in any way condone, support, or defend some of Cobb's more objectionable behavior. I simply wish to report on Cobb's story as far as baseball is concerned. His is a story that must be told, and this is the medium which I have chosen to tell this version of Cobb's story. I have researched this page quite thoroughly, and, to the best of my knowledge, the facts of his life are accurate as reported here. If there are indeed any errors, please contact me . Although the reporting isn't unbiased and doesn't pretend to be, I do not wish to spread half-truths and misinformation. That being said, here is the fruit of my labor, and I hope you enjoy it.

Web-posted June 21, 1996 at 4 p.m. F or nearly a quarter of a century, Ty Cobb, the greatest baseball player of his day - and some say of all time - made his home in Augusta. He finished his incredible career with dozens of records, including the highest lifetime batting average in major league history. Cobb, known as the ``Georgia Peach,'' was also one of the top celebrities of his day - a man who golfed with U.S. presidents, made a fortune on outside investments and even played the theater circuit. But his image is forever shaped by his aggressive play on the field and his off-field bouts of violence - both presented in this year's movie Cobb, staring Tommy Lee Jones, and the book it was based on by sportswriter Al Stump. On the field, Cobb taunted opponents as well as teammates, threatening them with his sharpened spikes, his bat or his fists. Away from the field, Cobb was frequently hauled into court for his assaults on fans, hotel porters, even a neighborhood butcher.

His best years were 1911, when he led the league in every major offensive category but homers and batted a career high .420, and in 1915 when he stole 96 bases.
Ty paid the price for success. He would practice sliding until his legs were raw. He would place blankets along the base and practice bunting a ball on the basket. During the winter he hunted through daylight hours in weighted boots so that his legs would be strong for the upcoming campaign. He overlooked no opportunity to gain an edge over his opponents, most of whom admired his drive to succeed.
Cobb appreciated the value of a dollar and engaged in annual haggles with Detroit executives before signing his contract. Cobb's earnings were invested wisely, mostly in General Motors and Coca-Cola stock, which made him very wealthy and probably baseball's first millionaire.

Ty Cobb's Greatest Thrill in Baseball

by Dan Holmes (Cooperstown, NY)
A member of the Society for American Baseball Research more info The battle for the 1907 American League pennant had been fierce all season long. The four contenders - White Sox, Indians, A's, and Tigers - were neck and neck into the homestretch. Finally it was Philadelphia and Detroit battling for the crown and the Bengals wrested away the lead from Mack's Athletics in the opening game of the season-ending series. Then came a day of rain and a doubleheader was scheduled for September 30, 1907 . Philadelphia's Columbia Park could seat 18,000 but 25,000 jammed their way into the venue, with another 5,000 watching from the windows and rooftops overlooking the field. It may have been a nervous occasion for the 20-year old Ty Cobb who was just completing his first full season as a Detroit regular. But based on his performance that day, he was far from nervous. Manager Hughie Jennings selected Wild Bill Donovan to face the A's, and Mack picked spitballer

When young ty wasn't playing baseball in the summer, he would be inNorth Carolina with his Grandad Johnny cobb. ty's grandfather
http://wso.williams.edu/~jkossuth/cobb/youth.htm
Ty:
The Early Years
Ty could be called a typical southern boy at the turn of the century. He was indoctrinated in the ways of the southern gentleman at an early age, and lived up to those standards for much of his life, with only a few lapses because of his exposure to the corrupting influence of early 20 th century major league baseball. Young Cobb with the Royston Reds, bottom row, left. Like many American boys at the time, Ty spent a great deal of his time playing baseball, much to the dismay of his father . He claimed he started to play "because I loved the competition, the matching of muscle and wits. It was a joust and a challenge" (Cobb, 21). When Ty began to play organized ball, he started with the local Royston team for boys, the Rompers. Baseball was played with a much different temperment then than it is today. Cobb writes in his autobiography that "it was as gentlemanly as a kick in the crotch" (41), not the sort of environment for son of a Baptist schoolteacher who didn't drink, smoke, swear or chase women. Yet its allure was too strong. "Once an athlete feels the peculiar thrill that goes with victory and public praise, he's bewitched. He can never get away from it" (Cobb, 42). He applied himself fully to baseball, and his talent was quickly noticed by the team of older boys with whom he soon began to play, the Royston Reds. When young Ty wasn't playing baseball in the summer, he would be in North Carolina with his Grandad Johnny Cobb. Ty's grandfather taught him to hunt and live in the woods and appreciate the excitement of the outdoors. Ty's love of hunting carried with him to the end of his days, despite a hunting accident which left a .22 slug embedded in his shoulder for the rest of his life. He had leaned a rifle against a tree, but when it fell and discharged, it hit him in the shoulder. The doctors were unable to find the bullet, and so they sewed him up, a decision which apparently had no ill effects in the long run.
