MAYOR GIULIANI HONORS THE MEMORY OF HALL OF FAMER ROBERTO CLEMENTE
On the eve of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani attended the First Annual Friends of Roberto Clemente Dinner commemorating the 25th anniversary of the untimely death of the Hall of Fame baseball player. At festivities held at Mickey Mantle's Restaurant, the Mayor presented a proclamation to Mrs. Vera Clemente, the widow of the late Pittsburgh Pirate, and named June 7, 1997, Roberto Clemente Day in New York City. "In the same year we honor the contributions of Jackie Robinson to the game of baseball and American society, it is only appropriate that we remember another of the game's great pioneers Roberto Clemente," Mayor Giuliani said. "For 18 seasons, Roberto was an opposing pitcher's nightmare and a defensive wizard in the outfield, winning an astonishing 12 consecutive Gold Glove awards." "He played baseball with a passion that was matched only by the community service he performed for his beloved Puerto Rico," the Mayor continued. "Roberto was devoted to his homeland and her people. Sadly, it was on a relief mission from Puerto Rico to earthquake ravaged Nicaragua in 1972 that Roberto Clemente lost his life. Though he was taken from us too soon, Roberto's legacy lives on his bust in Cooperstown was the first to ever represent a Hall of Famer of Latino descent, a 12-foot statue of Clemente welcomes fans to Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium, and, most importantly, his deeds and actions as a humanitarian and ballplayer have inspired generations of Americans."

This biography of Roberto Clemente is full of baseball and humanity. . . . Roberto's love for Puerto Rico, his desire that black and Latin American players achieve the same status and respect as white players, and his concern for underprivileged people are strong themes. . . . Baseball fans will welcome this book because of the fast-paced action, but the temper of the man and his concern for human beings will leave a lasting impression on the young reader.
—Horn Book
Walker's well-researched biography weaves statistics among family anecdotes and reconstructed conversations, making the text read quickly. . . . Roberto Clemente, by all acounts, was an extraordinary individual . . . a humanitarian whose example-setting good will is documented through touching episodes.

Millions of boys play baseball, and several thousand of them go on to become major league players. About two hundred even make it to the Baseball Hall of Fame. But only rarely does a player's life reach beyond the white lines of the baseball diamond. Among this select group are Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Lou Gehrig—and the great right-fielder of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Roberto Clemente.

Roberto Clemente
The greatest right-fielder to ever play the game of baseball Roberto Clemente was born Roberto Clemente Walker on August 18, 1934 in Barrio San Anton of Carolina, Puerto Rico as the youngest of four children. As a child, Roberto excelled in track and field, winning medals in the javelin throw and short distance races. However, his real love was baseball. He played amateur baseball with Juncos Double A Club and soon went on to play with the Santurce Crabbers in the Puerto Rican Winter League. From Santurce he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers and was assigned to play for their top affiliate, the Montreal Royals. In 1954, the Pittsburgh Pirates obtained Roberto with the # 1 pick of the draft. The following year, Clemente joined the Pittsburgh Pirates and stayed there his entire eighteen year Major League Baseball career from 1955 to 1972. Roberto played in two World Series, batting .310 in 1960 and .414 in 1971. He was the National League Batting Champion four times, was awarded twelve Gold Gloves, selected National League MVP in 1966 and was chosen as the MVP in the 1971 World Series. On November 14, 1964, he married Vera Cristina Zabala in Carolina, Puerto Rico. They had three sons: Roberto Jr., Luis Roberto, and Roberto Enrique. Proud of his heritage, Roberto insisted that Vera give birth to all three sons in Puerto Rico. The boys were six, five, and two, respectively, when their father met his untimely death.

Baseball Hall of Famer
Roberto Walker Clemente, the first Latin American player to be admitted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame , was one of Major League Baseball's greatest players. He was also one of the world's best known and remembered humanitarians. His accomplishments on the field enabled him to dedicate his life to those less fortunate. Mr. Clemente, born in Carolina, Puerto Rico on August 18, 1934, was the youngest child of Melchor and Luisa Clemente. The small town of Carolina was dominated by the sugar industry and few other opportunities existed. His father became a foreman for the local sugar company while his mother worked at the plantation house. Roberto's father also sold meat and later purchased trucks that enabled him to enter the construction trade on a part-time basis. The Clementes valued education, and they wanted their son to be an engineer. Although Roberto was a good student, he had an early interest in baseball. He frequently engaged in poor person's baseball practicehitting tin cans with a stick. In addition to playing baseball during high school, he pursued track and javelin, throwing to the extent that he was considered a potential Olympic competitor. Roberto was judged to be a natural athlete by many. He demonstrated a supreme love of baseball while aiming for excellence in every chosen endeavor.

Roberto Clemente, a Puerto Rican athlete, was one of the greatest baseball players in history. He won four National League batting titles and had a lifetime batting average of .317. Clemente won the league's Most Valuable Player award in 1966.
Clemente, who played right field for the Pittsburgh Pirates, won fame for his fielding, throwing, and hitting. He helped lead the Pirates to World Series victories in 1960 and 1971. Clemente never went hitless in a World Series game. He was named the outstanding player of the 1971 series. On Sept. 30, 1972, three months before his death, he became the 11th man in major-league history to get 3,000 hits.
Roberto Walker Clemente was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He died in a plane crash off the coast of Puerto Rico while flying to aid earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Clemente was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 in a special election, without the traditional waiting period of five years after a player has retired.
