Exhibit Drawing In Fans at the Hall of Fame by Elbert Garcia On December 31, 1972, baseball lost one of its brightest stars, as legend Roberto Clemente went down in a plane crash while flying relief supplies to Nicaraguan earthquake victims. 25 years later, his dedication to the game and the lives of others are being celebrated. The city of Pittsburgh announced earlier this month that it was renaming a major municipal suspension bridge after the Puerto Rican legend. Baseball's Hall of Fame , to which Clemente was inducted in 1973, is honoring the Pittsburgh Pirate slugger with a year-long exhibit and issuing a commemorative admission ticket all throughout 1998. "I can think of no better tribute to the memory of Roberto Clemente and the pride that he brought to Pittsburgh than renaming the Sixth Street Bridge, the Roberto Clemente Bridge," said Chairman of the Allegheny County Commissioners, Bob Cranmer, upon announcement of the renaming of
Pittsburgh's 6th Street Bridge.

Roberto Clemente had a life-long Dream. He wanted to give something back to the children of his hometown. Although he was never able to fulfill this dream himself, his wife and three sons are carrying out Roberto's dream in his honor. This is being done through the efforts at the Sports City in Carolina, Puerto Rico and through the Roberto Clemente foundation in Pittsburgh. The mission of the Roberto Clemente Foundation is to develop and improve the lives of inner-city youth. The foundation was established in September of 1993 by Roberto Jr. The Roberto Clemente Foundation provides recreational programs and educational incentives for Pittsburgh-area youth while teaching them the importance of community service. The foundation uses sports to educate the children about the importance of education and community service. It is a commitment to this foundation which allows Roberto Jr. to carry on his father's dream. The Foundation uses sports to help participants overcome life's obstacles and improve self-esteem, values and attitudes in an effort to prepare them to be responsible members of their communities. The Foundation primarily achieves this goal through the RBI (Reviving Baseball in the Inner City) Program.

Roberto Clemente Museum
The Roberto Clemente Sports City in Carolina, Puerto Rico is scheduled to be the home of the Roberto Clemente Museum. The building itself is completed, however the plans to put together the interior of the building have not been completed. The building has cathedral ceilings in the center with 3 closed off display rooms on the right side and a wide open display room on the left side. Also housed in the museum is the Sports City Gift shop where you can buy Officially licensed Roberto Clemente merchandise. Although the interior decorating of the museum has not yet begun, there is one prize possession of the Clemente family on display in the wide open display room on the left side. That item would be the 1972 Dodge Charger 440 Magnum Special Edition that Roberto won for his 1971 World Series MVP performance.
There are also 2'x3' reproductions of every regular issue Roberto Clemente card mounted to the walls in the center of the museum. These photos were created by Topps and shipped to the Clemente family for display during the Roberto Clemente Fan Festival which took place on January 2-6, 1998.

Career Batting Record Clemente originally signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers for a $10,000 bonus in 1954 and he spent the season with their top farm club. He was used sparingly, because the Dodgers were trying to hide his skills from other teams. At the time, a player who received a signing bonus could be drafted by another team if he wasn't placed on the major league roster after one season in the minors. The talent-laden Dodgers didn't put Clemente on their roster, and he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates for $4,000. Clemente became Pittsburgh's starting rightfielder during the 1955 season. He hit over .300 only once in his first five seasons, but he batted .314 with 16 homers in 1960, when the Pirates won the pennant, and he hit .310 in their seven-game win over the New York Yankees in the World Series. In the next seven years, Clemente won four batting titles, hitting .351 in 1961, .339 in 1964, .329 in 1965, and .357 in 1967. He was named the NL's most valuable player in 1966, when he hit .317 with 29 home runs and 119 RBI. After slipping to .291 in 1968, Clemente hit .345, .352, .341, and .312 in the next four seasons. Through most of his career, Clemente felt he was overlooked because of his Puerto Rican origin, and he was determined to impress the national television audience when the Pirates got into the 1971 World Series. He succeeded, batting .414 with 12 hits, including 2 doubles, 1 triple, and 2 home runs, and he made some outstanding plays in the field as Pittsburgh beat the Baltimore Orioles in seven games. Clemente easily won the most valuable player award for the series.

Russell gives readers a sense of what it is like to be on the field with a championship team and provides an up-close look at several of the unforgetable personalities who have touched his life. He passes on some of the lessons he learned from such mentors as Dan Devine, Chuck Noll and Art Rooney, and the values he attained from Hall of fame locker mates like Rocky Bleier, Franco Harris and "Mean" Joe Greene. Roberto Clemente biography penned by local author. Roberto Clemente is best remembered for reaching 3,000 career hits on the final day of the 1972 season, then dying in a plane crash later that year ferrying aid to victims of a Nicaraquan earthquake. But Clemente, says Cooperstown author Bruce Markusen, is also worthy of a fourth biography because of his hidden struggle with institutional racism while integrating the Pittsburgh Pirates. Markusen, 33, a senior researcher at the National Baseball Library, is the author of the recently released "Roberto Clemente: The Great One" from Sports Publishing Inc. Utica Observer October 4, 1998 Craig Muder
The baseball card lying in the case read "Bob" Clemente. The dealer was asking $5. And even though my father thought the price was a bit steep for a 1969 piece of cardboard, he forked over the money so I could grab a piece of history. It was the first real baseball card I ever owned. That was 1982, before the baseball card market really caught fire. Sixteen years later, that Clemente card is worth nearly $50. The memories, however, are priceless. So when a copy of Bruce Markusen's new book, Roberto Clemente: The Great One, came across my desk recently, I knew my leisure reading for the next two weeks was all booked up. It was well worth the time. Markusen spends a lot of time delving into Clemente's psyche as well, noting the cultural and language differences that often limited his ability to communicate clearly. After reading Markusen's book, any misunderstandings about Clemente are easily explained. All that's left is the legacy.

by Santiago Roberto Clemente was born on August 18, 1934. Roberto was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Roberto was a very good pitcher and lots of baseball teams wanted him on their team. When Roberto was a child, he and his father worked on a sugar cane plantation. Roberto started playing baseball when he discovered he was a good athlete. He was very, very poor and couldn't buy a baseball. He was always trying to save money to buy a rubber ball. Roberto practiced with a branch from a tree as a baseball bat. When Roberto grew up, he started to play baseball on a team. He didn't like his team. They treated him very, very badly just because he was Black. Because Roberto spoke Spanish, he could not understand his teammates. Some teammates even made fun of his accent. Then Roberto learned to speak English. He could understand his teammates better now but he still had an accent. Roberto started to like baseball very, very much. He would speak up when White people would treat Black or Hispanic people badly. In December 31, 1971, Roberto was killed in a plane crash while taking supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Roberto Clemente is remembered by many fans as one of the game's most exciting stars. Besides his outstanding fielding and throwing, Roberto might have ranked among the top ten in total career hits had it not been for his premature death in 1972. Artist John Wolf has suspended Clemente in space for us to always remember him for the impossible catches he made so routinely. How else could we finish this work than with Wolf's charcoal of Roberto acknowledging the applause for this 3000th and last big league hit. Associated Press NEW YORK Roberto Clemente's family is angry he wasn't voted to baseball's All-Century team, and commissioner Bud Selig didn't rule out the possibility he could be added. "The Hispanic community is in an uproar," Roberto Clemente Jr. said Tuesday night before the third game of the World Series. "I hope they won't boycott baseball, because that is something I have some difficulty with." His brother, Luis, said there has been talk in the Hispanic community from phone calls in Puerto Rico to e-mail to the Roberto Clemente Web site of a possible boycott of MasterCard, the All-Century team's sponsor. Luis Clemente said his mother, Vera, also was surprised. The entire family spoke before the game in presenting this year's Roberto Clemente Award to San Diego outfielder Tony Gwynn.
