Remembering Roberto Clemente on New Year’s Eve

by Mike Attiyeh
A member of the Society for American Baseball Research more info December 31, 1999 Tonight is not only New Year’s Eve and the last night of the 20th Century, but also the 27th anniversary of Roberto Clemente ’s tragic death. Though the Pittsburgh Pirate right fielder did plenty on the field to leave behind a strong legacy, it was his off-the-field contributions that touched the hearts of everyone – even if it took until the very end to realize it. Clemente, an ever-so proud black Puerto Rican, worked tirelessly to help his people and try to erase bigotry toward his race. He once said, "I work with the rich and live among the poor." Believe him! His death is how most people remember Clemente; that he sacrificed his own life to save the life of others. There is certainly honor and admiration in that. Others choose to remember his cannon arm, which helped Clemente garner 12 consecutive Gold Gloves. Others choose to remember his non-scientific swing, which netted nothing but line drives to the tune of four batting titles, 12 All-Star selections, an MVP Award and exactly 3,000 hits.

Hall of Fame Plaque Controversy September 22, 2000 The National Baseball Hall of Fame has changed the name on the plaque of the former Pittsburgh Pirates star and Puerto Rican baseball legend Roberto Clemente In the Hispanic/Latino culture, a person's mother's maiden name traditionally follows the given last name. So the Hall of Fame is correcting the cultural oversight and changing it to Roberto Clemente Walker. "By rectifying and recasting my father's plaque, the Hall of Fame has shown the respect and honor of our rich heritage and culture that my father was so proud of," said Clemente's son, Luis. "We could not be happier." The culturally correct plaque was created by Matthews International in Pittsburgh. It will travel to Clemente's native Puerto Rico in November for three days of festivities before returning to Cooperstown. Clemente, who was killed in a plane crash while delivering supplies to earthquake-ravaged Nicaragua on New Year's Eve nearly 30 years ago, was inducted posthumously into the Hall of Fame in 1973 as Roberto Walker Clemente.

Some consider Roberto Clemente the best right fielder in the history of baseball. In his 18-year baseball career, Roberto received many awards. He won four batting crowns and 12 Gold Gloves. He was voted the Most Valuable Player in the National League in 1966, and the World Series Most Valuable Player in 1971. He also was the first Hispanic elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In addition, Roberto was generous to those in need. Roberto, whose full name was Roberto Walker Clemente, was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico to Melchor Clemente and Luisa (Walker) Clemente. Melchor worked on a sugar cane plantation and helped his wife manage a grocery store and meat market. While still attending high school, Roberto began playing baseball for the Santurce Crabbers, a professional Puerto Rican baseball team. Two years later, a Brooklyn Dodgers scout recruited him to play for the Dodger's farm team, the Montreal Royals, the same team Jackie Robinson once joined. Despite the team's efforts to keep Roberto's talents unknown, the Pittsburgh Pirates recruited him on November 22, 1954. Roberto played right field for the Pirates for the rest of his career. Two years after joining the team, Roberto became the top player among outfielders, recording 22 assists. Roberto was often seen using the famous basket catch, a technique his predecessor, Willie Mays, often used. The Pirates won the National League Pennant in 1960 and then beat the Yankees in the World Series. Roberto hit safely in every game, batting .310. This was the same season that Roberto played on his first All-Star team.

This is my sport's hero, Roberto Clemente, the Great One. He played for my favorite team when I was a bit younger, the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played for the Pirates from 1955 to 1972, when he met an untimely death on New Year's Eve, 1972, while taking much needed supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He finished his career with a double, collecting his 3,000th hit in his last career game. He became the first Latin American player inducted into The National Baseball Hall of Fame, in Cooperstown, New York. He was also only the second player for whom the five-year waiting period was waived since the initial inductees entered the Hall in 1937 (Joe DiMaggio was the first).
He was a tremendously skilled baseball player and a great humanitarian who will never be forgotten by his family, his fans or the people of his native Puerto Rico.

August 17, 2001 GOVERNOR:$230,000 TO LIGHT ROBERTO CLEMENTE BASEBALL FIELD
Also Announces $155,000 for Six-Mile Hike, Bike Trail on Staten Island
Governor George E. Pataki today visited Roberto Clemente State Park where the Little League World Series-bound Rolando Pauline All-Stars play to announce $230,000 to light the Park's baseball field. The Governor also announced $155,000 toward the construction of a six-mile hike/bike trail on Staten Island. "The Rolando Pauline All-Stars have captured the heart of New York, reminding us all about the pure joy of baseball playing catch, hitting a hard liner, sliding into home that we treasured as kids," Governor Pataki said. "New Yorkers love baseball, and, with one voice, we will be rooting for our All Stars this weekend as the Bronx sends its first team to the Little League World Series. "For nearly 30 years, the baseball field at Roberto Clemente State Park has provided kids with a great place to play America's favorite game. Now, with the new lighting, the popular field will be open for nighttime play for the first time ever setting the stage for the continued success for ballplayers throughout the Bronx." The funding will provide for the design and construction of night program lighting for the existing baseball field at Roberto Clemente State Park in the Bronx. The use of the field, a popular recreation facility within the urban state park, has been limited to daylight hours. The provision of night program lighting will extend the field's hours of use during the baseball season.

But baseball was roberto clemente's greatest talent. roberto clemente's wholelife was baseball, his wife and children, and giving to others.
    http://www.troll.com/product/samples/rl_baseballrobertoclemente.html
Roberto Clemente The Pittsburgh Pirates were ahead by a score of 1-0 in the top of the seventh inning, but that wasn't much of a lead against a hard-hitting team like the San Francisco Giants, and now the Giants' best hitter was up at bat. The Pirate pitcher whipped a fastball toward the plate. The batter swung and connected, sending the ball bulleting toward the right-field wall. At the cruck! of bat against ball, the right fielder, Roberto Clemente, whirled and raced toward the wall. Clemente's left arm reached up and the ball smacked into his glove. Then Clemente himself slammed into the concrete wall, and blood spurted from his cut chin. Clemente fell to his knees, stunned. He shook his head to clear it, then he raised the glove, showing the white ball nestled in the brown leather pocket. The crowd went wild. "Arriba! Arriba!" thousands of Pittsburgh fans screamed. The jubilant cry followed him every step of the way back to the Pirate dugout. "Arriba! " was the hometown fans' way of telling Roberto Clemente just how much they loved him. By cheering him in Spanish, the fans were saying something special to the great Puerto Rican-born ballplayer. For Roberto Clemente, the hometown fans' approval was very important. Baseball was his life, and he wanted to be a perfect player every inning of every game. He was proud when he did well, and he felt very happy when his fans appreciated what he was doing for them.

ROBERTO CLEMENTE Biographies are often students' favorite reading material. Informative and inspiring, they are an entry into the further study of history, politics, sport, art, science, or the wider world of reading. Even those students who are not enthusiastic readers will gladly tackle biographies of people who interest them.
Student Text Teacher Guide Quiz One of the primary genres of literature, biographies play a major role in any language-arts program. But they can also be used across the curriculum to introduce units in social studies, science, and arts and values education. The life stories of men and women who have accomplished great things, overcome tremendous obstacles, or devoted themselves to lofty ideals make historical movements and events relevant and intelligible to young readers. Such people serve as encouraging role models for today's youth as well, motivating them to reach higher and further. The difficulties the subjects faced can be springboards for wide-ranging discussions that require students to think critically and express their ideas in clear and logical ways.

    Roberto Clemente
Roberto Clemente was born Aug. 18, 1934 in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He was raised i a poor family there. Roberto loved baseball when he was a kid. He always wanted to play pro ball, but h couldn't hit or throw as hard as other kids. By the time he got to high school, he was running faster and hitting harder, so he began to play baseball. Roberto ran so fast because he was on the track team, and he threw so hard because he was on the javelin team. He later married Vera Zabala, and they lived in Puerto Rico where he made a living playing baseball. In 1954, when he was 19 years old, Roberto was drafted into the pros. The scouts of the Pittsburgh Pirates saw him playing in the minor league and signed him with their team. He played baseball for 18 years, and won 12 gold gloves, four batting titles and a Most Valuable Player award in 1966. He played in 12 National League All-Star teams and two World Series. In an interview done after. the 1972 season ended Roberto said, "I am convinced that God wanted me to be a baseball player. I was born to play baseball." Fourteen months after his World Series win, Roberto died on New Year's Eve 1972. He was taking relief supplies to earthquake-torn Nicaragua. Roberto had heard supplies were being stolen there and he said they would not steal from him. Even though he was warned the plane was overloaded, he insisted on taking off and the plane crashed into the sea off San Juan. It was never found.
