The Baby Bull
by Lou Parrotta I recently had the privilege of reading a wonderful book by my good friend Bruce Markusen. Bruce used to host Sportswatch on WIBX Radio in Utica. He is now a lead researcher/librarian at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Bruce has done tremendous research on the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Oakland A's of the 1970s, and Roberto Clemente. His most recent publication, however, was a book geared towards younger fans on Orlando "The Baby Bull" Cepeda. Some of you may know that Cepeda was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 1999. Prior to that, however, Cepeda had an amazing career f rom 1958 until 1974. He amassed tremendous numbers in a game that strives on statistics, and the Veteran's Committee rectified the wrongs of fifteen years worth of Baseball Writers not selecting him for enshrinement in the Hall of Fame. Bruce's book, The Orlando Cepeda Story, told the story of Cepeda's growing up in Puerto Rico in his father's shadow. Cepeda's father, Pedro, was a nationally recognized hero to all Puerto Ricans due to his amazing talent on the diamond. That was a big load for the younger Cepeda to carry as he began his career. After nearly ten years in the majors, however, Cepeda became a star in his own right and those comparisons dissipated.

Induction Speeches
Orlando Cepeda
Transcript of Orlando Cepeda's speech, July 25, 1999: Bud Selig: Orlando Cepeda, San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves, Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox, and Kansas City Royals. Orlando was a powerful first baseman. A consistent run producer for seventeen major league seasons. Not withstanding chronic knee problems. His ability to drive the ball with authority was respected and feared by the opposition. A unanimous selection for both the 1958 National League Rookie of the Year Award and the 1967 Most Valuable Player, Orlando was an eleven time All-Star. He led the National League in home runs, 46, and runs batted in, 142, in 1961. He batted .300 nine times and slugged 379 home runs. His stalwart leadership propelled his clubs to three World Series. Congratulations, Orlando. Orlando Cepeda: Thank you. Thank you very much. Never came to my mind that a kid from Puerto Rico at the age of 17, come into the states and try a new venture in life. It's a great honor, a great honor to be here today in front of these wonderful human beings. Very talented people who played the game and lived the game they were supposed to play and live. I have to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to Bill Rigney, who in 1958 let me know right from the beginning "you are going to be my first baseman no matter what." In '58 I didn't supposed to make the team. In '58 I didn't supposed to play in the big leagues. But thank you to Bill Rigney who give me the confidence to go to the field and do the best.

Serrano Salutes Puerto Rican Baseball Star for Induction into the Hall of Fame
March 2, 1999
Washington, D.C. Congressman Jose E. Serrano (D-NY) today praised Puerto Rican baseball star Orlando Manuel Cepeda on his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Cepeda is the second Puerto Rican elected to the Hall of Fame, behind baseball legend Roberto Clemente who was admitted in 1973. "I am thrilled that Orlando Cepeda is in the Hall of Fame, because he deserves it!," Serrano said. "Cepeda has been waiting for this for so long... I am very proud of him, and I know this means a lot to him," Serrano added. Serrano called Cepeda at his San Francisco home hours before the officialannouncement. "I wanted to wish him luck. While he was waiting for theVeterans Committee's decision, he was calm but at the same time extremely excited," Serrano said, adding, "This is indeed a great day for him and for all of the baseball community." Cepeda, 61 and who was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, played 17 major league

Orlando Cepeda and the Hall of Fame by Steven Rubio Major league baseball came to San Francisco in 1958 when the Giants, with Willie Mays , joined the Dodgers on their move west. Despite Mays' undeniable brilliance, local fans wanted a hero they could call their own, and Mays carried New York baggage with him. So when a 20-year-old rookie named Orlando Cepeda hit a homerun on Opening Day, he became an instant favorite for many fans. In his first seven seasons, Cepeda clubbed 226 homers, hit better than .300 six times, led the league in HR and RBI in 1961, and kept his OBP around .360. Because of these and other accomplishments, most baseball fans in San Francisco were elated at Orlando's recent selection to the Hall of Fame. Cepeda suffered through knee problems that seriously affected the remainder of his career. He was traded to St. Louis, where he had the greatest season of his life in 1967. He led the league in RBI, a beloved category to MVP voters, and posted the highest OBP of his career (.403). He was touted as the clubhouse leader on the World Champions. There were plenty of other outstanding contributors on the Cardinals (among Cepeda's teammates having strong seasons were Bob Gibson Lou Brock Curt Flood Tim McCarver , and Steve Carlton ), but there were also plenty of other outstanding performances in the league that year.

On June 29, 1934, the playing streak of Lou Gehrig is put in serious jeopardy when he is hit in the head with a pitch during an exhibition game. Gehrig is diagnosed with a concussion but returns to the lineup the next day and collects three triples before rains wash out the game... On June 29, 1941, Joe DiMaggio breaks George Sisler's record for the longest hitting streak in American League history. In the first game of a doubleheader, DiMaggio hits a double to tie the mark. In the second game, DiMaggio singles in five at-bats to break Sisler's 1922 record of 41 straight games... On June 29, 1969, Billy Williams of the Chicago Cubs sets a new record for the most consecutive games played by a National League player. Playing in his 896th straight game, Williams surpasses the old record held by Stan Musial. On June 29, 1972, the Oakland A's and Atlanta Braves become the first teams to trade former MVPs for one another. Oakland sends Denny McLain to Atlanta for Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda. McLain will win just three of eight decisions with the Braves, while Cepeda will come to bat only three times with the A's because of knee problems... On June 29, 1984, Pete Rose of the Montreal Expos becomes the all-time leader in games played. Rose plays in his 3,309th game, surpassing Carl Yastrzemski... On June 29, 1990, Oakland's Dave Stewart and LA's Fernando Valenzuela pitch no-hitters. Stewart blanks the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-0, before Valenzuela shuts down the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-0. This marks the first time that two pitchers throw complete game no-hitters on the same day.
