Hiram Bithorn - A Baseball Pionero by Will Gonzalez April 15 was more than the deadline to file income taxes for Puerto Rican baseball fans. The date also marked the anniversary of the first Puerto Rican to play in the Major Leagues. Hiram Gabriel Bithorn Sosa earned that distinction when he pitched for the Chicago Cubs on April 15, 1942. A unique convergence of personal traits and historical events played a role in making Bithorn the first Boricua in the big leagues. Bithorn was not the best player from Puerto Rico then. "Perucho" Cepeda, Orlando Cepeda's father, and Pancho Coimbre were recognized as two of the best Puerto Rican players of all time; Cepeda was called the Babe Ruth of the Caribbean and Hall of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige often said that Coimbre was the most difficult batter he ever faced. Unfortunately, Cepeda and Coimbre could not play in the Majors because of their skin color. But color was not a barrier for Bithorn. He was of Spanish-Dutch extraction and his last name did not reveal his Latino heritage. Bithorn's extraordinary maturity and intelligence also helped him navigate the rough waters of discrimination. In fact, he was so mature the San Juan Senators made Bithorn the youngest manager in Puerto Rican Winter League history in 1938, when he was just 22 years old. In turn, Orlando was thrilled to get to know Rekow and Perazzo. I don't know who was more impressed by the meeting! All were together for the 18th Annual Encuentro del Canto Popular. A two-day music festival, based in San Francisco, which honored Orlando and his accomplishments.
