Lefty's Journal After a great Series between the Diamondbacks and the Yankees last fall, 2002 has been a busy year. In March, I flew back to New York for the kickoff of the new travelling Hall of Fame exhibit, Baseball as America. This display of baseball artifacts will tour our nation museums through August 2005. Baseball fans should really make an effort to see this exhibit if it is in their area. I was in Philly for a charity golf outing in June and finally out to Cooperstown for Hall of Fame Induction weekend. This years lone inductee was Ozzie Smith. My good friend and Phillies legend, Harry Kalas, was inducted into the Broadcasters wing of the Hall. Ozzie was the kind of player that pitchers love. He could make a great play to get you out of an inning and he could make things happen on the bases with his speed. What can you say about Harry. He is one of the few broadcasters that if you heard him in a crowded room, you would immediately know who it was. Here is a group shot after the induction ceremony. Ozzie gave a great speech comparing his career to the story the Wizard of Oz and the layers of a baseball. It was well thought out and well delivered.

63. Steve Carlton's Official Web Site! - Photo Album.
Hopefully, Pete will be reinstated by baseball and he will have his rightfulplace in baseball history, a plaque in the Hall of Fame. MVP CY .
http://www.carlton32.com/pages/album.html
Lefty's Photo Album Talk about a candidate for a weight-training program. I was 6 -foot-3 and I weighed about 178 pounds soaking wet. We had a good high school team, and we went to the State Finals, which we lost. I was scouted by Kansas City, St. Louis and Pittsburgh. It was hard for them to miss the kid with the wingspan of a condor. Still a gangly left-hander but now wearing Cardinal uniform in the big leagues- - I was scared to death. This is the last year the Cards played in the old Busch Stadium. Can you imagine this skinny kid telling Timmy McCarver, 1964 World Series MVP, that he needed to call more breaking pitches behind in the count. He almost took my head off. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. "The Trade" or "Rebel With A Cause." Auggie Busch traded me to the last-place Phillies over a salary dispute ($5000). I was mentally commited to winning 25 games with the Cardinals and now I had to re-think my goals. I decided to stay with the 25-win goal and won 27 of the Phillies 59 victories. I consider that season my finest individual acheivment. Pete Rose came over to the Phillies in '79 and he became the catalyst that helped us to put it all together. His example on the field and his leadership helped to bring everbody's play up a notch. Hopefully, Pete will be reinstated by Baseball and he will have his rightful place in baseball history, a plaque in the Hall of Fame.

Donnie, Keith, and Steve

by Don Malcolm Who needs the Keltner List when we have all these tools to measure performance? Because the Hall of Fame is imprecise and haphazard, and the more times we circle around the same data, the more likely it is that some piece of context will emerge from the debris and allow us to anoint someone as either Worthy or Not. If the above seems overly critical of a framework that has thus far dominated the Hall of Fame presentations here, you are directed over to the Big Bad Blog for a far more incendiary version. In the meantime here, I’ll stay on my medication and deliver a relatively sober assessment for three first basemen currently overshadowed by Eddie Murray —taking them alphabetically, we have Steve Garvey Keith Hernandez , and Don Mattingly I’m not going to take a lot of time answering the questions on the Keltner List for reasons that will be clearer to you if you decide to brave the Blog. There are really only two that matter—question #1 (was the player ever the best in baseball) and #10 (best player at his position currently not in the HoF). The rest are essentially instruments for special pleading of various sorts, or simply add anecdotal evidence that is rarely (if ever) sufficient to make a difference in borderline cases. For question #1, we have several modes of interpretation.
