Roy Campanella was born on November 19, 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a child he realized he had a talent and love for the game of baseball. His pursuit of greatness took him through the sandlots, high school, and then into the professional ranks. In 1937, at the age of fifteen, Roy was spotted playing a semi-pro game. The Negro leagues really wanted him. He was too young to play full time, so he went to school during the week and when the weekend rolled around he played in the Negro league. The following year, he quit school and played baseball full time. For nine seasons, Roy Campanella, better known as "Campy", played in the Mexican and Negro leagues. He was a man among boys. His feats are legendary, and many people still talk about him today. It is said he could throw out any base runner in the league from his knees. He proved it several times over. In 1948, at the age of 27, Campy moved into Major League Baseball. He was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers. Roy was the first black catcher in the league. Campanella was a fixture behind the plate for nine seasons. He led the National League in putouts for six seasons, hit two hundred forty two home runs, and caught in the World Series five times. During his career, he was the National League Most Valuable Player in 1951, 1953, and 1955.

He joined the Dodgers in 1948 and was their regular catcher from 1949 until an automobile accident after the 1957 season left him paralyzed.
During his playing career he was named the NL most valuable player three times (1951, 1953, 1955) and was recognized as the best fielding catcher in the league in the 1950s. He was also known for his hitting and in 1953 led the league in runs batted in (142) and hit 41 home runs. He played in five World Series (1949, 1952-53, 1955-56). His autobiography, It's Good to Be Alive, was published in 1959. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969.

Roy Campanella biography
Roy Campanella was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 19, 1921. He began playing professional baseball in an era that African-Americans could barely dream of playing in the major league and was the first black catcher in major league baseball history. In 1937, Campanella played with the Bacharach Giants, a semi-pro team before playing as the starting catcher for the Baltimore Elite Giants in the Negro National League. He, like many African-American players, spent his winters playing ball in Latin America. Campanella was granted a deferment during World War II since he had two children. He went to play in the Mexican League in 1942 but returned to the Giants in 1944. bodyOffer(2126) Branch Rickey and the Brooklyn Dodgers were looking for African-American players to integrate major league baseball. They first signed Jackie Robinson and then soon afterward in 1946 they signed Campanella. He played in the minor league for two years and then made a brief appearance with the Dodgers early in 1948. Next, he was sent back to the minor league in an attempt to integrate the American Association. He was promptly called back to the Dodgers after hitting 13 home runs in 35 games there. The 26-year old Campanella had a batting average of .258 in 83 games in 1948. In 1949, his batting average was .287. Campanella hit 22 home runs that year and earned a spot on the All-Star team in addition to helping the Dodgers win the National League pennant in 1949.

http://sportsjunkie.info/Roy Campanella.htm
For the Record Life hasn’t been kind to me lately. I won an all-expenses-paid trip to the Bahamas for 10 days; when I got there, I was told that nights weren’t included, only days. I asked what should I do every night; I was told I’d have to stay out of the Bahamas. And my doctor just took the stitches out; my dog’s favorite bone is in my arm. Then I looked up my family tree and found out I’m the sap. To top that off, my fan club just broke up; he died. And now this. This is what you all cheer for; me making a mistake. Well, you got it. On 8/29, I asked the trivia question, and on 9/5, I answered it. Then I got an e-mail from my pal in Thousand Oaks, California, Ted Toback, advising me that my once-flawless memory is flawed. John Smoltz isn’t the only pitcher to win 20 games in a season, and record 20 saves in a season. It seems that Kirk Gibson’s favorite pitcher, Dennis Eckersley, did the same thing. Well, I won’t make another mistake-not ‘til next time. Story of the Week ROY CAMPANELLA Baseball’s all-time record crowd wasn’t attracted by a red-hot playoff game or a World Series game. Instead, 93,103 fans filled the Los Angeles Coliseum on May 7, 1959 to honor Roy Campanella, whose baseball career had ended the previous year when the car he was driving skidded into a telephone poll, leaving him paralyzed.

In the 1950s, on a team with Pee Wee Reese Duke Snider , and Jackie Robinson , it was Campy who won three MVP awards. He was a superb catcher who hit the ball for both power and average; the roly-poly receiver was quick and agile behind the plate with a rifle throwing arm, and was the premier defensive catcher of his day. He was also known for his hitting and in 1953 led the league in runs batted in (142) and hit 41 home runs. He played in five World Series (1949, 1952-53, 1955-56). An expert handler of pitchers, he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1948-1957, setting a number of fielding and home run records for catchers until a tragic auto accident in 1958 ended his playing career.
