Physical Therapy Scholarship Foundation Baseball Store Baseball Bookstore Baseball Equipment Baseball Movies ... The Roy and Roxie Campanella Physical Therapy Scholarship Foundation awards academic scholarships to students who wish to pursue the health care field of physical therapy based on the students ability to demonstrate a cultural sensitivity to the patient. These financial awards assist senior physical therapy students who successfully exhibit awareness of cultural and ethical considerations that contribute to optimum patient care and recovery. In 1958, Roy was involved in a tragic automobile accident that left him paralyzed until his death in June 1993. During these 35 years, Roxie's commitment, knowledge, and dedication exemplified the essential role needed to sustain and advance the physically challenged family. I'm pleased to invite you to share in a cause that was close to Roy's heart. As a result of Roy's experiences he wanted to find a way to reach out to others who were embarking on a "second life" due to spinal cord injury. It was his dream to create a program that would provide needed equipment, education, information, aid, support and encouragement to those living with injury related paraplegia and to provide scholarships to students completing their studies in the field of physical therapy. The Roy and Roxie Campanella Foundation is the result of Roy's dream. I'm proud of what we've accomplished so far and I look forward to continuing Roy's work. Please join me at the exciting fund raising events we have scheduled.

http://www.hihard1.com/dtw/campypg4.htm
Recollections of Roy I recall an instance at one of my earlier fantasy camps at Dodgertown. The first day we always had tryouts. I was in the last group at the
pitching strings area and the last one to do our 10 pitches. By now, everyone else was gone except the catcher and myself. After warming up, I began by throwing 5 fast balls in a row for a strike. I finished off the last 5 pitches with sliders and curve balls. 10 strikes in a row
and I was feeling great and began walking to the locker room with the catcher. As we were leaving, we heard a voice saying "You've got it, you've got the touch." It was Roy Campanella who had been in the gardens next to the pitching strings and saw me throw the 10 strikes. There was a big smile on his face. We spoke for several minuets about pitching, staying within yourself, and having fun at what
you are doing. Several times, he said "You've got the Touch". In coming years, I recall Roy would be watching live batting practice on the fields. I was traditionally a dead pull hitters with warning track power. I kept hearing him say "Hit that ball to right", "Hit that line drive" "You can do it", I know you can do it". After taking my cuts, we would have discussions on hitting. This went on for 3-4 years and eventually I began getting better control of my hitting, using more of the field and hitting to right. Now, every time I get a hit to right field I always say "Thank you Roy". I've been playing baseball for 13 years now as an adult. I pitch 20-30 games a year

Died: June 26, 1993, Woodland Hills, California A successful catcher is defined by his ability to handle the pitching staff, throw out would-be stealers, and keep errant throws and pitches in front of him. Roy Campanella possessed all these skills and then some. The man they called "Campy" was the complete package, leading National League catchers in putouts six times, and clubbing 242 home runs in his 10-year Major League career. From 1948-1957, Roy Campanella was securely anchored behind home plate for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He caught in five World Series, won the National League Most Valuable Player award in 1951, 1953, and 1955, and was the first black catcher in Major League Baseball history. Career Batting Record Major league baseball's first black catcher, Campanella began playing professionally when blacks could hardly dream of ever being in the majors. In 1937, he was with the Bacharach Giants, a semi-pro team, but before the season ended he was the starting catcher for the Baltimore Elite Giants of the Negro National League. Like many blacks, he played winter baseball in Latin America while he was with the Giants. Because he had two children, Campanella was granted a draft deferment during World War II. He went to the Mexican League in 1942 but returned to the Giants in 1944. When Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers was looking for a black player to integrate major league baseball, Campanella was among those considered. Jackie Robinson, of course, was chosen for that role, but Campanella also signed with the Dodgers soon afterward, in 1946. After two seasons in the minor leagues, Campanella was with the Dodgers briefly at the beginning of the 1948 season. He was sent down to the minors, primarily to integrate the American Association, but was called back up for good after hitting 13 home runs in 35 games.
