Worst baseball deadline trades
Page 2 staff
With baseball's trading deadline passing last week, Page 2 has compiled our list of the 10 worst deadline deals in baseball history. Stolen base legend Lou Brock was a steal for the Cardinals. Our definition of a "deadline" deal is expanded a little to include trades made before the July 31 and deals made before Aug. 31 when players are required to clear waivers. Although some of the trades worked out briefly in the short tern for the "losing" teams, these clubs lost out by giving up players who proved far more valuable than any short-term fix. After taking a look at our list below, check out how our readers ranked their choices for the worst midseason baseball trade before the deadline . Then be sure to vote in the poll to crown the all-time worst baseball trade deadline deal. 1. Cubs trade Lou Brock to the Cards for Ernie Broglio (June 15, 1964)
When the Cubs traded away Brock, he was a 24-year-old with a .260 average in two big league seasons. "Brock struck out a lot and didn't know how to run the bases," said Bill White, who played first base for St. Louis in 1964. "We thought we had given up too much." Broglio was a good pitcher, winning 70 games in a little more than five seasons for the Cubs before being traded, and leading the NL in wins with his 21-9 record in 1960, but he had developed a sore arm and went only 7-19 in two-plus seasons with the Cubs. Brock helped the Cards take advantage of the 1964 Phils astounding collapse. St. Louis won the NL flag and beat the Yankees in the World Series. Brock hit .348, stole 33 bases ... and then went on to lead the NL in steals eight times and bat over .300 eight times. He became a Hall-of-Famer in 1985.

Bone, the Bald Bomber, or
The Jay Who Led the Way
Elsewhere on this site, I wrote a two-part history Jay Buhner changed all that, for me at least, and I always found myself pulling more than a little bit harder for him because of it. A gritty competitor with a powerful stroke, an equally potent arm, a distinctive, um, hairstyle, and an enjoyment of the sillier side of the game, Buhner was a natural for me to root for. And playing for the Mariners, a team with which I felt more than a slight bond (my hometown of Salt Lake City had served as Seattle's AAA outpost for several years during adolesence and I have several family members in the Pacific Northwest), made him that much more visible to me. Buhner took a roundabout route to the Mariners. After starting his career in the Pirates chain, he was traded to the Yankees along with Dale Berra for Steve Kemp, Tim Foli and $400,000 in 1984. A 31-homer season at Columbus in 1987 earned him a September callup with the Yanks. After being promoted again from Columbus in 1988, he hit only .188 for the Yanks, who, in typical Dark Ages of Steinbrenner fashion, ran out of patience with him quickly. On July 21, 1988, he was shipped off to the Mariners (along with two pitching prospects) for Ken Phelps

If you ever went to one of these things in school, you know the drill. The instructor goes over all the old material, pauses to tell a long, pointless story from the past, and frowns at that earnest but lazy kid who asks whether it will be on the test. I have no exam for you, unless you want to stay after class, but sit back and enjoy a good old-fashioned rehashing anyway. Two months ago, discussing the Trot Nixon phenomenon, I predicted that Trot would fade a lot, that Jay Buhner would fade a little, and that Albert Belle might heat up. Here is the original column to refresh your memory. And below, through the games of August 10, is the new tally of American League right fielders:

Sept. 24, 1997 The eyes of the baseball world have been riveted on the historic quest for more than a month. But now, with less than a week remaining in the 1997 regular season, the heroic pursuit seems destined to fall just shy of the target. And no, we're not talking about Ken Griffey Jr. and Mark McGwire chasing Roger Maris' home run record. We're talking Jay Buhner 's feverish scramble towards Bobby Bonds' legendary strikeout record. Back in 1970, Bonds fanned an awesome 189 times. Through Tuesday's games, Buhner had fanned 173 times, making him the runaway leader in that category in Major League Baseball. Now even though Buhner whiffs every 3.9 at-bats, he will probably not get enough at-bats in Seattle's remaining games to overtake Bonds. However, Buhner still has an opportunity to make this one of the most incredibly perverse seasons in major-league history. And it's also exceedingly likely that Buhner will reach a rarified 180 strikeouts. If so, only Bonds (189 whiffs in 1970 and 187 in 1969), Deer (186 in 1987)

WHO TOPIC THE SCOOP How severe is Nomar Garciaparra 's wrist injury? March 26: Garciaparra received some bad news on Monday as a hand specialist he went to see at the University of Virginia informed him that surgery would be the best option in order relieve severe pain in the shortstop's right wrist. "I think he has reached a stage where he can't tolerate (the pain) anymore," Dr. Frank McCue said of Garciaparra. "Swinging the bat is one of the hardest things on the wrist." Garciaparra and the Red Sox will now have to decide whether to heed McCue's advice and have the surgery, which could sideline the shortstop for anywhere between 10-16 weeks, or play through the pain.
