George Brett Quotations From George Brett "A woman will be elected President before Wade Boggs is called out on strikes. I guarantee that." "He (Jamie Quirk) looks like a greyhound, but he runs like a bus." "He said I couldn't do (off the field) what I did when I was 23 or 24, and I paid attention to him. Damn it, I got a trainer and went to spring training in the best shape of my career and in 1985 had the best season I ever had and we won the World Series. Before that, I didn't know how long I was going to play. That talk with Mr. Fogelman was the most inspiring talk I ever had with anyone." If a player ever had claim to the title "The Franchise," it would have to be George Brett in Kansas City. Brett played his entire career for the Royals, leading them to six AL Championships and two World Series in their heyday of the late '70s and early '80s. The all-time team leader in every offensive category except for stolen bases, Brett's number 5 was retired along with those of former manager Dick Howser and second baseman Frank White on April 7, 1997.

When George Brett Made His Run at .400 by Dan Holmes (Cooperstown, NY)
A member of the Society for American Baseball Research more info George Brett began the 1980 season innocently, hitting .255 as late as May 22. But from that day forward he hit a sizzling .427 and took the baseball world on an exciting ride in pursuit of the elusive .400 mark. Though he missed 37 games prior to the All-Star break due to injuries, Brett climbed up the batting charts. Not since Ted Williams in 1941 had anyone hit .400 for a season, but it became evident by August that Brett was intent on doing so. He hit .472 in June, an amazing .494 in July, and .430 in August. From July 18 to August 18 he hit in 30 consecutive games, a Royal record. His unbelievable success prompted his hitting mentor Charlie Lau to proclaim, "I feel like Dr. Frankenstein watching his monster on the loose." On August 17 Brett went 4-for-4 against the Blue Jays, running his hitting streak to 29 games. But more impressively he had boosted his average to .401. The next day he stroked three more hits and stood at .404. A little over a week later, a five-hit performance in Milwaukee raised his mark to .407 - the highest level he would reach.

The Royal star granted hundreds of interviews before he finally had to set up daily press conferences to handle the demand. "I just don't know how to handle all this media", Brett said, "In the clubhouse it's embarrassing. The guys must be getting tired of this."

Growing up as a fan of the Kansas City Royals (in case you have just recently started paying attention to baseball, or just arrived on this planet, you need to know that the Royals were a great organization throughout the 1970s and most of the 1980s), we felt that we were the center of the baseball world...that our team would always be at the
top of the American League standings...that we would have multiple future-Hall of Fame players (OK, you can stop laughing now.).

George's Bio Kansas City Royals Kansas City Star Email Us! George Brett He was already the only player to win batting titles in three different decades, a thirteen-time All-Star, and the last modern player to make a serious run at hitting .400. The younger brother of pitcher Ken Brett, he led the league in hits and triples in 1975, repeated in both categories in 1976, and added his first batting title that year, hitting .333 to edge Rod Carew and teammate Hal McRae, later his manager. From 1976 to 1978 the Royals lost three straight playoffs to the Yankees despite Brett's three-run homer in 1976 and his three consecutive homers off Catfish Hunter in 1978. Just before the All-Star break in 1980 Brett was hitting .337 when he strained ankle ligaments trying to steal a base; however, he got hot in July and even hotter in August, going 4-for-4 on the 17th to reach the magic figure of .400. With two weeks left, he slumped but finished strong (10-for-19), ending the season at .390; he also led the league in slugging (.664) and, to absolutely no one's surprise, was named MVP. That year, the Royals broke the playoff jinx against the Yankees as Brett homered in Game One and hit an upper deck home run off Goose Gossage to win Game Three. Although the Phils beat KC in a six-game Series, Brett homered and went 9-for-24 in the Series. The Royals finally won a championship in 1985 as Brett starred offensively and defensively; he went 4-for-5 in Game Seven, robbed the Cardinals of five potential hits and went 10-for-27, scoring five runs.

    http://www.sportingnews.com/baseball/100/55.html
The first thing pitchers noticed about George Brett was the concentration, the intense eye contact that suggested he was up for any challenge. The second was a line drive plugging the gap or nestling into either corner, a likely occurrence whenever a game was on the line. Brett was known for many magical moments during his 21-season run with the Kansas City Royals, but his reputation as one of the most feared clutch hitters in baseball history will transcend the 20th century. He broke into the major leagues in 1973 as a sure-handed but scatter-armed third baseman and finished his career 3,154 hits later as a first baseman. The sandy-haired, free-spirited Californian often credited his offensive prowess, which produced three American League batting titles and a spectacular .390 average in 1980, to hitting guru Charley Lau, who changed him from a Carl Yastrzemski-type free swinger into a controlled, weight-shifting machine. The sight of the lefthanded-hitting Brett crouching, weight shifted to the back leg and bat resting comfortably on his shoulder, suggested confidence and relaxed control. His focus was unbreakable, his swing was picture-perfect and he always was a step ahead of the pitcher. He could drive the ball with home run power to any section of the park and his flair for dramatics was uncanny. Numerous big-game home runs and a career .305 average would attest to that. So would a post-season passion that allowed him to produce numerous slugging records in six American League Championship Series and a .373 average in two World Series. Brett, a 13-time All-Star selection and 1985 Gold Glove winner, could have posted even better numbers if not for a series of nagging injuries, the product of the aggressive, hustling intensity he always brought to the field.

But remember that Brett once hit three home runs off Catfish Hunter in Yankee Stadium and the Royals lost. The Royals simply had to have come-through performances from some others to perhaps avoid a similar fate. They got them. The list starts with Steve Farr, who darn sure wasn't thinkin of a game like this one when he wore an Omaha uniform early in the season. "In fact, last winter I was thinking about getting a job in the real world," said Farr, who in 1984 was a 3-11 pitcher with the Cleveland Indians.
