BENCH, JOHNNY LEE (1947-). Johnny Bench had a remarkable baseball career that can be measured by the opening line on his hall-of-fame plaque, "Johnny Bench redefined standards by which catchers are measured during his seventeen seasons with 'Big Red machine'." Bench, born on December 7, 1947, in Oklahoma City, grew up in Binger, Oklahoma. He excelled in athletics, achieving All-State honors in basketball and baseball for Binger High School. Idolizing another Oklahoma baseball legend, Mickey Mantle, Bench would later receive the same admiration from a new generation of Oklahoma baseball fans.
In 1965 the Cincinnati Reds drafted Bench, and at spring training Ted Williams autographed his baseball, "to a hall-of-famer for sure." In 1968, proving Williams prophetic, Bench became the first catcher to win the National League Rookie of the Year award. Playing his entire career with the Cincinnati Reds, Bench batted .267 and belted 389 home runs. The Reds, dubbed the "Big Red Machine" in the 1970s, won two World Series, four National League pennants, and six divisional titles. Bench made the NL All-Star team fourteen times, led the league in runs batted in three times, and received the Most Valuable Player award twice. In 1970 Bench was the youngest player ever named MVP.
Bench had exceptional defensive skills also. He won ten straight gold gloves and was one of the best at throwing out base-stealers. He became the first catcher to wear a protective helmet in the field, and he caught with one hand behind his back to protect it from foul tips. In the 1976 world series Bench hit .533, had two home runs, drove in six runs, and threw out the only attempted base-stealer to win the series MVP. In 1989, the first year he was eligible, the Baseball Writers Association of America voted Johnny Bench into the Baseball Hall of Fame. After baseball Bench started a broadcast career, among other projects.

Considered by some the greatest catcher of all time, Bench got a "can't miss" tag when Peninsula of the Carolina League retired his uniform after he hammered 22 homers in 98 games as an 18-year-old in 1966. He spent the first four months of the 1967 season at Buffalo, then took over the Cincinnati catching job in August 1967. In spring training of 1968, Ted Williams autographed a baseball "To Johnny Bench, a Hall of Famer for sure." Bench met expectations quickly by catching a rookie-record 154 games that season, setting a record for catchers with 40 doubles, and becoming the first catcher to win

JOHNNY BENCH
Dreams of the Big Leagues Johnny Lee Bench was born on the 6 th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, in Oklahoma City. He was the youngest of three brothers, and Johnny played baseball as soon as he could walk. Bench’s father Ted was a good athlete who played baseball in the service, and like his future Hall of Fame son, he was a catcher. In the mid-1950s Ted Bench organized a PeeWee baseball team in Binger, Oklahoma, where he had moved his family when Johnny was three years old. The youngest Bench was made catcher of that PeeWee team. His father soon realized he was a natural. Growing up in the tornado ravaged region of Oklahoma, in a small town, Bench found little to do but play baseball. Though his class had just 21 students, it did have a baseball and basketball team, and Johnny starred on both. As an American legion player Bench hurled a no-hitter at the age of 16, playing with boys older than him. Johnny admired fellow Oklahoman Mickey Mantle, and he wanted to follow his hero into the big leagues. In his senior year tragedy struck the small town of Binger when a bus carrying the baseball team went off the road and flipped several times. Bench was not hurt seriously, but two of his teammates were killed.

JOHNNY BENCH Baseball Hall-of-Famer Johnny Bench was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on December 7, 1947. The third of four children of Ted and Katy Bench, he was All-State in basketball and baseball at Binger High School and the Valedictorian of his graduating class. Johnny's childhood dream was to become a major league baseball player and his father counseled that the position of catcher was the most direct route to that goal. Taking that advice, he was selected in the 1965 amateur draft by the Cincinnati Reds and signed with them. After two seasons in the minors, Bench made Cincinnati's Major League roster for the 1968 season. This marked the beginning of one of the most successful careers in baseball history and to Johnny's ascension as a celebrity. He maintains a sense of balance by using his celebrity status to aid worthy causes, such as the Heart Association, the American Cancer Society (as National Chairman of "Athletes vs. Cancer"), the Kidney Foundation, Franciscan Sisters of the Poor Health System and Muscular Dystrophy. He also supports the Cincinnati Symphony, the Museum of Science and Industry, and his own Johnny Bench Scholarship Fund, which grants financial aid to Greater Cincinnati-area college students. Bench has enjoyed maximum national visibility through his thousands of hours of entertainment experiences and personal appearance of the Bob Hope Christmas Shows in the Far East has sung with the Cincinnati Pops, authored books including Baseball For Idiots, and hosted a wide range of television programs, from his Emmy Award-winning instructional show The Baseball Bunch, a 1984 PBS special Billy Sunday, and various baseball oriented programs. The year 2000 marks Johnny's 27th anniversary as spokesperson for Fifth Third Bank based in Cincinnati. He has appeared in hundreds of advertising campaigns promoting the banks' products and services as well as teaming up to support a variety of community events.
