Ernie Banks Birthday Boy: Ernie Banks Turns 72 By Steve Holley
Date: Jan 31, 2003
No, he didn't get a national reception from Hallmark or Good Morning America, but Cubs legendary icon Ernie Banks turned 72 Friday, and if that's not enough to warrant just a little bit of recognition, nothing is. Ask any Cubs fan who of the old school class qualifies as their favorite, and almost 9 out of 10 will tell you it's Ernie Banks. Born on January 31, 1931 in Dallas, Texas, finished with a total of 512 career homeruns on the North Side, and holds the distinction of being one of very few Cubs players who spent their entire Major League Career with the North Siders. He was known as a quiet kid, yet one who was almost always seen smiling. He didn't believe in starting riots because of the way he was or wasn't treated, and didn't let others tell him how he should play, or what he should be doing to help his fellow man. He quickly became as much of a Wrigleyville icon as Bob Dylan at Woodstock. His famous "Let's Play Two!" is still echoed today throughout

Banks was poster boy for title futility
By MICKEY HERSKOWITZ
In September 1953, the Chicago Cubs bought the contract of Ernie Banks from the Kansas City Monarchs. He appeared in 10 games and delivered 11 hits, including a homer. Then he went back to his home in Dallas and a job as a bellhop at the Adolphus Hotel. Ernie was 22 years old and that rare jewel, a shortstop with home run power. The future beckoned clear and strong, and from hard and humble beginnings, he would follow it to the Hall of Fame and a unique distinction. He would become the symbol of every great player whose team never won a championship. Banks was destined, or doomed, to play 19 seasons, every agonizing one of them with the Cubs. Yet there is no public record that Banks ever admitted to any frustration or despair.

71 Year Old Knees Helped By Prolotherapy
Baseball Great and Hall Of Famer Ernie Banks My name is Ernie Banks, I am 71 years young and feel I have one more season left, thanks to the help of Prolotherapy Ernie knows that many people remember him in his days as one of baseball's most feared hitters and that the sight of him limping around could be very disconcerting to a lot of his fans. "The one unusual thing about playing professional baseball and you retire, other people see you limping around, (and it bothers them.) They call my wife and say what in the world is wrong with Ernie ? Do something. He can't even walk. We remember him running." As Ernie reached his mid-50's, his knee pain really began to kick in.

Corrections Ernie Banks talks baseball and business After retiring from the Chicago Cubs, the former slugger says he developed a new passion making money. By Michael Craig You have to know two things about Ernie Banks: He never stops moving, and he never stops talking. Half a year from being a septuagenarian, Banks repeatedly postponed the interview to exercise, play golf and meet Nelson Mandela. I was going to question that last excuse, until I remembered that Banks introduced Hillary Clinton at the 1996 Democratic National Convention. Banks has come a long way from Dallas, where his parents' grocery shopping would consist of buying a month's worth of rice and beans. Between Mandela and Hillary Clinton, and rounds of golf with Bill Gates and Warren Buffett Ernie is a gold glove name-dropper, but he's earned the right Banks established himself as a part of baseball history. In 19 years with the
