The secondary will be solid and the linebackers decent by MAC standards. The line needs to generate a pass rush. Defensive Line: They all return but that doesn't mean they're going to be much better. The pass rush was anemic and the run D was miserable. Senior Mark Zachery returns at tackle alongside sophomore Greg Pagnara . the ends are big both tipping the scales at 260+ pounds. Seniors Evan Triggs and Richard Crable return. Triggs is the best player on the line registering 55 tackles and 3 sacks last season.

    Ryan Dempster Chat
Florida Marlins' pitcher Ryan Dempster, from Sechelt, B.C., joined SLAM! Baseball online this evening to talk about baseball and the Florida Marlins. Review his answers in the transcript below. Dave What's it like playing in Florida? Ryan Dempster: I have to say that it is great place to pitch but a little humid at times. Since I came home the weather has not been too bad, because it has been sunny. KEN @ COMOX,BC YOU JUST MISSED A WORLD SERIES RING (1997), COMING UP IN 1998, WHAT DO YOU FEEL ARE THE CHANCES OF THE MARLINS BEING COMPETITIVE NEXT SEASON? IF YOU SEE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT WHERE WOULD YOU MAKE THE CHANGES? Ryan Dempster: I think the chances are pretty good. We improved from last year quite a bit and I see us improving even more next season. I think that you can always use starting pitching, maybe another starter and the Marlins have been talking about going and getting a catcher. We have two great catchers but we did not get a lot of home runs out of that spot so maybe a more offensive catcher.

Several of the most important legal documents in the early history of modern major league baseball were created during a protracted legal battle that resulted from Napoleon Lajoie jumping his contract with the National League's Philadelphia Phillies in order to play for the upstart American League Philadelphia Athletics. This gave the Athletics instant credibility as a major league team, and helped to create great animosity between the two leagues. The Lajoie case is still cited as being relevant in sports law today. In early 1901, the owner of the Philadelphia Phillies, Colonel John L. Rogers, filed suit in state court to try to regain Lajoie's services. Rogers and his team, the Philadelphia Ball Club, Limited, were the plaintiffs vs. Napoleon Lajoie, Benjamin F. Shibe, President, Cornelius Magillicuddy (Connie Mack), Manager and Treasurer of the Philadelphia American League Base Ball Club, and Frank Hough, Agent were the defendants. Common Pleas Court No. 5 rejected the Philadelphia Phillies request for an injunction against Lajoie and the American League on May 17, 1901. The Phillies promptly appealed this decision.

    Star Pitchers- Father and Son
The Baseball Public Will Watch with Interest the Career of Ed Walsh, Second, as He Follows in the Footsteps of His Illustrious Father on the Hurling Slab
By I. E. SANBORN If, when, or as, Big Ed Walsh II makes good, either with the White Sox, or? eventually- Major League baseball will have its first conspicuous example of the illustrious father and son.
There have been fathers and sons in professional baseball; there have been famous sons of third rate players; there have been second rate sons of star players; there have been illustrious brothers, like the Wrights, the Tebeaus and the Waners, to mention only a few of the past and present; there has been a whole family like the Delehantvs who have made their name known throughout fandom. But up to date no outstanding star in the history of the national game has given back to that game a son who has become illustrious.
The famed heroes of old, like Old Hoss Radbourne, Cap Anson, King Kelly, Charley Comiskey, Amos Rusie, Tom Burns and John Clarkson, and the later crop of great players, like John McGraw, Hugh Jennings, Connie Mack, Herman Long and Hugh Duffy? none of them has bequeathed to baseball a son who has come anywhere near filling his place in the realm of the nation's sport. So far, perhaps, Connie Mack has come as near to it as anyone, but it looks as if it would be as a manager and strategist that the son of the eminent Cornelius would shine if at all, rather than as a player. And the others named either have no sons at all or none who displayed either great ability or, liking for the game.

What is a nice man like Charles Cornelius doing working in loan collections? What Charles Cornelius, Supervisor of Default Prevention, is doing is helping students pay their bills on time and helping schools collect funds that are owed to them through innovative programs such as the Early Intervention Program (EIP). Charles began working here in 1990, but left in 1997 to pursue other opportunities. He returned here in 2001 as Supervisor of Default Prevention, which was the same position that he held when he left. At the time of his return, the company had just launched EIP as a pilot program developed to reduce default rates at a few schools experiencing difficulties in that area. Charles was excited with the results that showed 85% of borrowers assigned to EIP became current on their student loan payments, and he began working to expand the program to more schools. The program is based on having extensive contact with past due borrowers during the early stages of delinquency before it is too late for borrowers to bring their account current. Past due borrowers receive phone calls when they are 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 days late with their payment, and they also receive letters urging them to pay their bills when they are 30, 50, 75, and 105 days past due. After automating these processes, his department now can serve an increased number of schools and can concentrate on what they do bestcounseling borrowers to pay their bills. "As a result of our work, someone might be able to buy their first car or house because they have not ruined their credit," Charles says with pride.

Growing up in the City of Philadelphia was a definite benefit for a little boy. It had everthing any large city could have; except the Yankees! There were plenty of other kids and lots of things for them to do. Whether we hopped the "el" and rode to 69th St or jumped on the subway and rode to South Philly, we found adventurous journies to fill our days. Our favorite pastime however, was the many trips to Connie Mack Stadium (Shibe Park) at 21st and Lehigh. We didn't mind that the Phillies were usually a dismal team, with a record of desperation unmatched in the millenium. They were the "Phillies", and we were faithful fans! We made the trips with the proper "reverence" in our minds, smiles on our faces and hope in our hearts. Though we were often disappointed, the memories aren't so bad! There are many, but here's one of my all time favorites.
    Nights in North Philly
The year was 1958, late April or early May. There was a chill in the night air, but the first hint of spring, immediately recognizable in the mind of an eight year old boy, was apparent when the breeze was still. Not much was on his mind as the trolley lurched to a stop at the corner of Broad and Lehigh, nothing but the seven block walk to 21st St. He didn't mind the walk. It was a chance to hear again, the old stories that he knew so well...Stories of Howard Ehmke and Rube Wadell; tales of Babe Ruth and Connie Mack and legendary yarns of roof- top crowds and the "spite" fence that shut them out. As they passed the "10th Inning Cafe", he asked about the name, as he had so often in the past. The answer was the same, and he wondered why anyone would want to spend the 10th inning in a bar.

You'll Have A Ball (and Bat) in Otsego County
    By PAUL QUIRINI Staff Writer
After returning from a trip to Otsego County last week, with an itinerary that included stops in Cherry Valley, Cooperstown and Oneonta, I realized one fundamental thing: I could live there. Having driven Interstate 88 on several recent journeys to Otsego County (and points beyond) in recent weeks, I opted to head down Route 20 this time. You can tell the difference between Western Avenue in Albany and Route 20 when you're going west: less traffic, the rising sun behind you, and the increasing amount of farmland around you. Cherry Valley My first destination was Cherry Valley, a tiny village so named by an early settler, Rev. Samuel Dunlop, for its abundance of cherry trees. From Albany, the trip took about an hour-and-a-quarter but didn't seem nearly that long because of the scenic beauty to admire as I drove. Most businesses didn't seem to open until 10 a.m., so I walked around town for a little while and learned about its history. At the traffic light, for example, is a Civil War monument erected in 1868 in memory of local men "who died that their country might live," as an inscription reads. Such men as Cornelius Hardendorf, of the 152nd New York Infantry; Sgt. William O. McLean, U.S. sharpshooter, and Charles D. McLean, 1st Regiment; and Charles P. Nicholls, of the U.S. Navy, are listed on the memorial, atop which sits an eagle.
