  • It's unclear what Sandy Alomar Jr. does to improve over Mark Johnson. The projection for Joe Crede seems low. It's due to the poor season he had in 1999. The White Sox longshots are fairly uninteresting.

Washington Baseball Club Foundation
The mission of the Washington Baseball Club Foundation is to revitalize youth baseball and softball in the Nation's Capital. We are dedicated to restoring area baseball and softball fields, as well as providing uniforms and equipment to youth teams.
On Saturday, May 18, we sponsored the kick-off reception for the "Legends for Youth" baseball clinic. All of the proceeds from the event went to the "Midtown Youth Academy"—a community center serving kids from the '14th street corridor' in Northwest D.C.
The highlight of the weekend was a FREE baseball clinic at RFK Stadium conducted by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association. Over 100 kids participated and learned some great tips on baseball and life from the likes of Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins, Harold Baines, and former Washington Senators Chuck Hinton, Jim Hannan and Fred Valentine.

SAY IT AGAIN: More Quotes
This page is under sporadic construction as I attempt to dig up a ton of really good quotes. Bear with the confusion.... On staying mellow even under incredible pressure: "I have the ability to say, 'Whatever.'" "Just because you're slow doesn't mean you can't run the bases. If you play enough baseball, you know what you can and can't do." An alternate career choice: "I would like to be a Goodyear blimp pilot. Blimps are kind of fascinating to me. I grew up in California where the blimp would land pretty often. That's what I would have been, if you can believe that. It's better than saying a plumber, right? That's what I've always wanted to be. I got to go up in one so that was pretty cool." (Borrowed from AthleteDirect.com.) Defending his "unearned" rep as the clubhouse prankster: "There are a lot of guys who do that stuff. It's just that I get blamed for everything." (Reminds me of an interview with AM-1000's Steve Cochran where he said "I just tell 'em (players that actually cause mischief) what to do." Also borrowed from AthleteDirect.com.)

Youth served, but Ripken remains
Once the youngest Star, Oriole is now AL's elder statesman By Globe Staff, 07/13/99 Cal Ripken making his 17th consecutive All-Star appearance, 16th as a starter, was asked about the changing of the guard in baseball. There are 24 first-time All-Stars in this year's game. ''In the beginning, there were a lot of the same guys,'' he said, ''then all of a sudden, you'd get to the clubhouse and look around and there would be a whole new group of young, talented players. ''The game evolves with the changing of the guard. I've gone from being the youngest guy to the oldest [he'll be 39 Aug. 24]. You look at some of these 21-year-olds, they have birthdays close to when you graduated from high school.'' Orioles righthander Mike Mussina , on whether Pedro Martinez will wear down in the second half of the season in his attempt to become the first pitcher since Denny McLain in 1968 to win 30 games. ''It's a long year,'' Mussina said. ''Whether you're built like Pedro and I, who have essentially the same build, or Randy Johnson at 6 feet 10 inches, it's a long year, putting your arm and body through that 35, 36 times a year. It's a grind. It's not easy to do. If he does stay healthy, pitches well, and actually accomplishes this, it'll be an amazing year.''

THE CLEVER BASE-BALLIST Insight and Opinion of the National Pastime #5 May 19, 2000 The Greatest Hitter You Never Gave A Moment’s Thought Of! There’s an active player right now with the following impressive batting: Totals: AVG .291 G 2732 AB 9648 R 1279 H 2811 HR 376 RBI 1595 BB 1029 OBP .357 SLG .468 Is it Barry? No! Junior? Wrong again? Would you beleve thesr numbers have been posted by a man who has only played 80 or so games on the field since 1987. The man is DH-extraordinaire Harold Baines! Still going strong at age 40 (albeit he is only batting .262 in the early part of this season), Harold seems to have quietly amassed batting numbers worthy of Cooperstown. The purists froth in the mouth with such a thought. How can a man who never plays the field and seldom broke into the Top-10 of any significant batting stat even be considered. There’s much spirited debate about Harold Baines entry into the Hall of Fame. I just want to present some factual data on the issue. First off, we generally look at Baines as striclty a D.H., having virtually abandoned his glove by his 28th birthday. It's may be a bit troubling that he has played a total of 81 games in the field since the start of 1987. If a D.H. wants to be regarded as a Hall of Fame candidate, he better be a darn good D.H. - a la Edgar Martinez. This was not totally a voluntary move by Baines. In 1986 Baines suffered a serious knee injury that required two operations, and forced him to the DH role. Hence the lack of games on the field and the low number of stolen bases after the ’86 season.

The players are ranked by position, so first basemen are not compared to second basemen, etc. The players are then broken down into Type A, Type B and Type C (and the rest). When a team loses a free agent who is ranked in one of the three categories, they receive compensation as follows (if and only if they offered that player arbitration before he signed with his new team):
  • Type C. Team losing player gets a supplemental pick after the second round.
If a team doesn't offer arbitration to their free agent, they get nothing when he signs with another team. This brings up the next question of why don't the teams always offer arbitration? The answer is, they might simply be afraid he'll accept it. It's a gamble some teams aren't willing to take, even if it seems likely the player is heading out of town. Teams must offer arbitration by Dec. 7.
