Born : 3/19/1927 in Tilden, Nebraska Died : 9/91997 in New York, NY Debut: Pos : OF Ht: Wt B: T: R Years Games AB Hits HR RBI SB Avg The leader of the 1950 Whiz Kids, Richie Ashburn was considered one of baseball's greatest leadoff hitters. From 1948 to 1959, he was at the top of the order for the Phillies. He finished his career with a .308 average, fueled by nine seasons in wich he hit .300 or better. In 15 years, he collected 2,574 hits and was the league batting champ in 1955 (.338) and 1958 (.350). He led the league in hits three times with a career high of 221 in 1951. His career included stops with the Phillies (1948-59), Cubs (1960-61) and Mets (1962). As a defensive player, he established baseball records for leading the league nine times in chances, four seasons of 500 or more putouts and nine seasons of 400 or more putouts. His defensive skills rose to the top in the final game of the 1950 season. Ashburn grabbed a single from the Dodgers' Duke Snider and threw out Cal Abrams at home. Had the run scored, the Phillies would have faced a playoff for the pennant. Instead, Dick Sisler hit a home-run in the 10th to break the tie and give the Phillies the win.

Career batting statistics When Ashburn joined the NL's Philadelphia Phillies in 1948, Harry "The Hat" Walker, who had won the 1947 batting championship, was the starting center fielder. But Ashburn took over the job and held it for twelve years. The speedy Ashburn batted .333, led the league in stolen bases with 32, and was named rookie of the year. An outstanding leadoff man, Ashburn lacked power, but he had an extremely good batting eye, enabling him to earn a lot of walks, and he beat out many infield hits, leading one sportswriter to comment, "He's no .300 hitter. He hits .100 and runs .200." Ashburn hit over .300 in 9 of his 15 major league seasons and led the league with .338 in 1955 and .350 in 1958. He was also the league leader in hits with 221 in 1951, 205 in 1953, and 215 in 1958; in triples with 14 in 1950 and 13 in 1958; and in walks with 125 in 1954, 94 in 1957, 97 in 1958, and 116 in 1960. An outstanding defensive center fielder, Ashburn had more than 500 putouts in four different seasons and he tied Max Carey's record by leading in putouts and total chances nine times. Ashburn was traded to the Chicago Cubs after the 1959 season and in 1962 he became one of the original members of the New York Mets. He batted .308 and was selected to play in the All-Star Game for the fifth time. He might have had a few years left, but he retired after that season, in part because of frustration at the ineptness of his teammates.

A Tribute To Richie Ashburn © Erick Emert 1997 The last game of the 1950 season saw the Phillies and Dodgers tied for first place. The schedule had them playing their last game against each other in Ebbots Field. With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Dodgers had runners on first and second with no outs when Duke Snider lined a single to center off Robin Roberts. In center field, Ashburn was looking for a bunt and was playing in close, backing up a potential play at second. He fielded the ball and his throw was perfect. Catcher Stan Lopata applied the tag, and Cal Abrams was out by at least 15 feet. In the 10 th , Dick Sisler won the game for the Phillies with a three run-run homer. Richie Ashburn made it to the Hall of Fame in 1995. I’m glad he made it before he died because he deserved it. He waited 33 years to hear that call. He was a humble man in a lot of ways. This was his reaction to being selected: " It's pretty awesome in there. So I know what it means to be in there. Believe me. But for some reason, I think it's going to mean a lot more when I'm dead than when I'm alive. Because it's forever. You're immortalized. I don't feel immortal right now. I feel very mortal, really. But the neat thing is that it will be there forever, and that's kind of how I look at it ."

Richie Ashburn died today, and just about everybody who'd seen him play or heard him on the radio was in mourning. The Philadelphia papers overflowed with tributes. A couple of Internet sites collected touching anecdotes from his fans. In Philadelphia, without a doubt, Richie Ashburn's death left a bigger void than Princess Diana. Everybody around Philly knew Whitey. He was a decent guy who felt like a friend to everyone who heard him, even if you'd never met him. And if you'd seen him play baseball, you felt even more connected. He was just an old baseball player and announcer, after all, but the impact of his death says something important about the way baseball affects ordinary people. Richie Ashburn was a connection to many childhoods over hree generations. If you saw him play, you could share his accomplishments; it was easier to feel closer to a working-class player than a myth like Mickey Mantle. Ashburn didn't hit home runs, he hit singles, drag bunts, line drives to the opposite field, and he hustled on every play and almost never struck out. His lifetime batting average was .308 and he won two batting titles.

Excellence in academics is something that Ashburn and Graham, who carries a 4.00 grade point average in the Honors program, would have agreed on. While it is difficult to maintain that level of excellence, Graham said she is driven to excel. Graham, a Fox Chase resident, writes primarily feature articles for the Northeast Breeze and hopes to become a reporter when she graduates. The Phillies partial-season ticket-holder, however, is not sure that she wants to be a sports writer when she leaves Temple. Although she loves baseball, Graham confided that she is not a natural athlete. While her athletic endeavors may keep her on the sidelines, she is hopeful her journalist goals and determination will make her a starter at some newspaper.
