The 1996 Topps Stadium Club Members Only baseball cards were limited to a production run of only 750 in 1996 for the first time. Since they were only sold as sets you will be hard pressed to find these sold individually (unlike Refractors, APs and other rare cards that have production runs under 1,000). These cards are not only a great investment, but they are also beautiful. I also have non-Members Only of these same players (if card # is 226 or higher) at a fraction of the costs listed below. A copy of Topps' certification of the 750 print-run is also available upon request. Quantity discounts available. I'll pay postage on all orders of 5 cards or more. (A-B) (C-F) (G-L) (M-O) (P-S) ... The alomar reputation had been spotless before Roberto spit on umpire John Hirschbeckduring the We're a good family, sandy said then. We're a baseball family

Roberto Alomar follows brother as All-Star MVP
DENVER (Jul 8, 1998 - 0:57 EDT) First Sandy, now Roberto. The All-Star game's MVP award is becoming the Alomar family's personal property. Roberto, disparaged throughout baseball since his spitting incident with an umpire two years ago, went 3-for-4 with one of the game's three home runs as the American League outlasted the National 13-8 Tuesday night at Coors Field in the highest-scoring All-Star game ever. He singled in the first inning, popped out in the third and walked, loading the bases in the fourth. Then in the seventh, he connected off Trevor Hoffman with a 375-foot drive that put the AL ahead 9-6. Last year, it was Sandy who was the star, doing it before the hometown fans in Cleveland. The elder of the two sons of former major league Sandy Alomar hit a two-run homer off Shawn Estes to give the AL a 3-1 win at Jacobs Field. "It's real nice," Roberto said. "Last year, my grandmother died and Sandy won it. This year, I won it." Sandy had felt he had begun to redeem the family name with the big game last summer.

MLB FOREIGN EXPANSION by Craig Tomarkin It all started when the Montreal Expos debuted in 1969. They made their first and only post season appearance in strike shortened 1981, with a 60-48 record. Andre Dawson and Gary Carter were the team's hitting stars and they managed to beat the Phillies three games to two in the opening playoff series. In Game 5, Steve Rogers pitched a shut out for them against Steve Carlton to win it. They were unable to outlast the Dodgers in the next series though as Fernando Valensuela allowed only 3 hits in 8 2/3 innings to beat them 2-1 in a thrilling come from behind Game 5 victory. As of 2002, we are still waiting for them to make a World Series appearance. The Toronto Blue Jays were the second foreign team to join the MLB in 1977. Again, a team from Canada. This franchise proved to be stronger than the Expos. They first made the playoffs in 1985 and again in 1989. The team soon became a force, making the playoffs three straight years from 1991 to 1993. The last two seasons they won back to back World Series, establishing them as the first foreign team to build an MLB dynasty. Who will follow as the next foreign team? Will it be another team from Canada or will another country step to the plate?

A switch-hitter, Robbie became a regular at the age of 20 for the Padres. Two years later he was part of a blockbuster deal which landed him in Toronto. With the Blue Jays, Alomar won two World Series titles and solidified himself as baseball's most complete second baseman. Later he starred in Baltimore and Cleveland, forming All-Star double play duos with Cal Ripken Jr. and Omar Vizquel. Alomar has eventually worn out his welcome every place he's played, and has been involved in several controversial episodes which have tarnished his image. With the O's on September 27, 1996, he was called out on strikes by home plate umpire John Hirschbeck. Alomar responded with a tirade, and spit in the arbiter's face, drawing an ejection, and later a fine and suspension by Major League Baseball. The spitting incident hung like a cloud over Alomar for the remainder of his time in Baltimore, and opposing fans booed him frequently. Later, Alomar complained that his teammates were not retaliating when he was thrown at by opposing teams, even though he acknowledged several of the pitches were unintentional. In 1999, when Indians' teammate Manny Ramirez was accused of using a corked bat, Alomar stirred controversy by suggesting other players, specifically

All-Star Game proves baseball is back for good
    column by MATT SPURGIN
Going ... going ... gone! "Holy Cow!" Yep, Tuesday's All-Star Game was a great game, and despite how critics feel, baseball still has plenty of excitement. Two outs and your team is tied. There is one runner on base. You step to the plate hoping to help put your team in the lead, and what happens? A home run in front of your hometown fans what better could Sandy Alomar Jr. have done in this situation? This was the first All-Star home run by an Indians player since Rocky Colavito homered in the 1959 All-Star Game, and it was the first time a player hit a home run in his home ballpark since Hank Aaron's blast in the 1972 game in Atlanta. This was definitely an exciting game. Some baseball games can be boring. I remember when I could watch Cubs games in the afternoons on WGN, but that was in a city where the cable system actually carried decent channels. Those games could be boring, but not if you loved baseball. Then there are those certain games each year that promise to be exciting. The All-Star Game is one of those games.

Alomar played every position but pitcher and catcher in the majors. A light hitter, he became a regular with the 1968 White Sox after he learned to switch hit. Though he led AL second basemen in errors in 1968 and 1969, most observers considered the errors a by-product of his exceptional range. He was California's everyday second baseman for five years, played 648 consecutive games from 1969 to 1973, and in 1971 led the league with 689 at-bats - a since-broken AL record for a switch hitter. Sold to the Yankees in 1974, he led the AL in fielding at 2B in 1975. He stole 20 or more bases in seven seasons, and 227 lifetime. He became a manager in his native Puerto Rico, and a coach for the Padres, the team that signed his sons Roberto, an infielder, and Sandy, Jr., a catcher.

Not only did he hit .324, slamming 21 homers and knocking in 83 runs to lead all AL catchers, but he had a season-high 30-game hit streak and hit the game-winning two-run homer at the All-Star game played at his home park, Jacobs Field . If not for his own brittleness he made eight trips to the DL in the 1990s and the unparalleled defensive play of Texas' Ivan Rodriguez , Alomar might well have been considered the premier American League catcher of the decade.
