Henry Aaron On this date in 1934, Henry Aaron was born. Now an African American baseball executive, he is major league baseballs all-time home run hitter. Henry Louis Aaron was born and raised in a segregated neighborhood in Mobile, Alabama. Aaron's father worked at the Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company.
Young Aaron was a good student, but from an early age he knew he wanted to play professional baseball. He spent most of his spare time at Carver Recreational Park, a neighborhood playground a block from his home. There he played sandlot baseball, essentially teaching himself the game. When Aaron was a young teenager, professional baseball slowly began to integrate with the arrival of Jackie Robinson, the first black to play in the major leagues. Aaron’s high school did not have a baseball team, so he played in local amateur and semi-pro leagues.
Aaron was recruited by the Mobile Black Bears to help win an exhibition game against a professional Negro League team, the Indianapolis Clowns. The young man's talents attracted the attention of Syd Pollock, the Clowns' owner. In 1952, the Clowns offered Aaron a contract — $200 a month to play in the Negro League during baseball season. He was thrilled, and at that time he thought the salary was a small fortune. After only a short time in the Negro Leagues, the Milwaukee Braves recruited Aaron. He joined the Braves' system in 1952 and was sent to the minor leagues. There he became one of the first black players to break the color line in the Deep South a dangerous proposition in the last, desperate days of segregation that was legally enforced by Jim Crow laws.

byname of HENRY LOUIS AARON (b. Feb. 5, 1934, Mobile, Ala., U.S.), American professional baseball player who, during 23 seasons in the major leagues (1954-76), surpassed batting records set by some of the greatest hitters in the game, including Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Stan Musial. Aaron, a righthander six feet tall and weighing 180 pounds, began his professional career in 1952, playing a few months as a shortstop with the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League . His contract was bought by the Boston Braves of the National League, who assigned him to minor-league teams, first at Eau Claire, Wis., then at Jacksonville, Fla. He joined the Braves, who meanwhile had moved to Milwaukee, in 1954, thereafter playing mostly as an outfielder. In 1956 he won the league batting championship with an average of .328 and in 1957, leading his team to victory in the World Series, was named the league's Most Valuable Player. Before the Braves moved to Atlanta, at the end of 1965, Aaron had hit 398 home runs. In Atlanta on April 8, 1974, he hit his 715th, breaking Babe Ruth's record, which had stood since 1935. After the 1974 season, he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers of the American League. After the 1976 season, Aaron retired as a player and rejoined the Atlanta Braves as an executive. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Jan. 13, 1982.

July 18, 2000. Did Hank Aaron's Race Diminish His Reputation? Join Our Forum Online. Journalist Sandy Tolan grew up in Milwaukee a devout Hank Aaron fan, even when the Braves moved his favorite slugger to Atlanta. Twenty-five years after Hammerin' Hank broke Babe Ruth's unbreakable home-run record, Tolan says Aaron is still the most underrated ball player ever. And he feels race has everything to do with it. As Hank Aaron got closer and closer to the Babe's magic toll of 715, he was also getting death threats and hate mail from Americans who couldn't stomach a black man taking a white man's record. "Don't listen to them," young Sandy Tolan wrote Aaron. "You're my hero." How much have we all changed since then? When the Williams sisters are the queens of tennis, and Tiger Woods is the world's greatest golfer - when John Rocker, playing for Hank Aaron's old team, stands on the mound as a symbol of racial division and is described as a human confederate flag? Guest: Sandy Tolan , author of Me and Hank Jose Masso , Director of the Sports in Society Program at Northeastern University;

Home Sports BaseBall A portal dedicated to famous persons of the world Hank Aaron
Hank Aaron is Major League Baseball's all-time leading career home run hitter with 755 over a 23-year career. Not only did he set baseball records, but he did it while under the racial criticism of people from all over the country. He received death threats on a regular basis and was often booed from the stands of his own team. Never once did he let that slow him down, although he sometimes feared for the wellbeing of himself and his family. Henry Louis Aaron was born in Mobile, Alabama. He began his baseball career as at the age of 15 as a shortstop for the Mobile Black Bears, a semiprofessional baseball team. When he was 17, he drew the attention of Syd Pollock, the owner of a professional Negro League baseball team. After graduating from high school, he played with the Indianapolis Clowns only briefly. Soon he attracted the interests of several Major League Baseball teams, and in 1952 he signed with the Milwaukee Braves (now Atlanta Braves). He played for the Braves' minor league teams. He spent a year in the Class C Northern League and was promoted to the Class A Southern League for the 1953 season. Not only was he among the first African American players admitting into the league, but he won most valuable player (MVP) honors. In 1954 he made his major league debut on opening day. The 20-year-old made immediate contributions to the team in home runs and runs batted in. He won National League batting titles in 1956 and not only won MVP in 1957, but led the Braves to a World Series Title that same year. He finished his career with 755 home runs, 2297 runs batted in (RBI's), 6856 total bases, 1477 extra base hits, and times at bat (12,364) times at bat, all Major League Baseball records.

HANK AARON Baseball Star Henry "Hank" Aaron hit 755 home runs during his major league career, making him America's all-time home run leader. Aaron hit #715 on April 8, 1974, moving him past the record 714 career homers of Babe Ruth . Much like Roger Maris , Aaron was maligned by some fans who thought he was somehow unfit to surpass the mighty Ruth. (Racism played a part; Aaron was black, and passed Ruth's record only 28 years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball.) Aaron retired after the 1976 season, holding the all-time home run and RBI records and having played in a record 24 All-Star Games.
Extra credit : Aaron's nickname was "Hammerin' Hank"... He batted and threw right-handed... Aaron wore uniform #44 in the major leagues except during his rookie year, when he wore #5... His brother Tommie Aaron was also a major-leaguer who played with the Braves... Aaron published his autobiography, I Had a Hammer, in 1991... He was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1982... Aaron hit his 715th home run off of Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Al Dowling... Slugger Sadaharu Oh hit 868 homers during his career (1959-80) in Japan's major leagues, making him the worldwide home run leader... Aaron started his career with the Milwaukee Braves; the team moved to Georgia in 1966, becoming the Atlanta Braves. Aaron played for a new Milwaukee franchise, the Brewers, in 1975 and 1976.

Hank Aaron: Hammerin' back at racism
By Larry Schwartz

Special to ESPN.com
Alphabetically and arithmetically, what could be finer than having "Aaron, Hank" as the first name listed in The Baseball Encyclopedia ? The book's leadoff man is better recognized as the cleanup hitter who holds the Cadillac of baseball records: His 755 home runs are the most by a major leaguer. Hank Aaron saw his name bypass Babe Ruth's on this April 8, 1974 swing of the bat. Aaron also hammered his way into the record book for knocking in the most runs (2,297), total bases (6,856) and extra-base hits (1,477). He ranks second in at-bats (12,364), tied for second with Babe Ruth in runs (2,174), and third in hits (3,771) and games played (3,298). He is the only player to hit at least 30 homers in 15 seasons and at least 20 homers in 20 seasons. He hit at least 40 homers eight times, with a career-best of 47. He is the first player to reach 3,000 hits and 500 homers. He led the National League in homers and RBI four times each and played in 24 All-Star Games. A lifetime .305 hitter, Aaron did most his damage for the Braves, first in Milwaukee (1954-65), then in Atlanta (1966-74), before finishing his 23-year career with the Milwaukee Brewers (1975-76).
