    8. Say Hey, Kid!
For years, Joe DiMaggio held the title of baseball's greatest living player. As of 8 March that was no longer possible, so the Denver Post surveyed explayers, managers, and sportswriters to anoint a successor. Their choice Willie Mays. While a quick look at the stats is impressive (the Giants outfielder was the ultimate five-tool player He could hit, hit for power, run, field, and throw), many believe what separated Mays from the others was his sheer baseball intelligence. In topping the survey, the Say Hey Kid beat out some pretty fair competition hank aaron, Ted Williams, and Sandy Koufax, in that order. Wired News

Baseball begins season-long tribute to Hank Aaron
Click here for more on this story Posted: Thursday April 08, 1999 10:35 PM AP ATLANTA (CNN/SI) It's taken 25 years, but it appears as though Hank Aaron is finally getting his due. On the 25th anniversary of his hitting career home run No. 715 and breaking the all-time record, Aaron was saluted by the Atlanta Braves before Thursday's game with the Phillies. This ceremony was the beginning of season-long celebration of The Hammer that will have the home run king being honored at ballparks across the country. Commissioner Bud Selig, NL president Len Coleman and Al Downing, who surrendered the historic homer, were among the many on hand to honor Aaron during the 45-minute ceremony. "You know 25 years ago ... when I hit that home run to beat the Babe's record, it was truly one of the most remarkable evenings that I have ever had in baseball," Aaron said following a two-minute standing ovation from the big crowd at 50,000-seat Turner Field.

Career Batting Record Other Resources Aaron began his professional baseball career as an 18-year-old shortstop for the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League. A right-handed hitter, he batted cross-handed, with his right hand below his left hand. Still, he showed enough promise as a hitter that the Boston Braves bought his contract and changed his grip. After two years in the minor leagues, Aaron became the starting leftfielder for the Braves in 1954, the team's second season in Milwaukee. He replaced the veteran Bobby Thomson, who had broken his ankle. No one could have imagined that the slender, 160-pound rookie would eventually break Babe Ruth's career home run record, although he hit a respectable .280 with 13 home runs before breaking an ankle in September. In 1955, Aaron became the Braves' starting rightfielder and he won the NL batting title in 1956 with a .328 average and 26 home runs. By 1957, Aaron was a solid 180-pounder, a feared power hitter and a genuine superstar. He was the league's most valuable player that season, leading in home runs with 44, runs batted in with 132, and runs scored with 118. The Braves won the pennant and beat the New York Yankees in a seven-game World Series, led by Aaron's .393 average, 3 home runs, and 7 RBIs.

On the 25th anniversary of Aaron's breaking the all-time career home run record set by Babe Ruth, the Henry Aaron Award was established to honor the best overall hitter in each league. Winners were chosen in 1999 by a system that assigned points for each hit, home run, and RBI. They're now selected by radio and television broadcasters and analysts, who vote for three players from each league, with 5 points for a first-place vote, 3 points for second place, and 1 point for third place. Henry (Hank) Aaron
    By: Gabe P.
Henry Aaron was born on Feb. 5, 1934, one day before Babe Ruth's 39th birthday. He was the 3rd child of Estella and Herbert Aaron. He was born in Alabama during the Great Depression as the son of a poor boilermaker's helper. His father was happy to support the five of them with $75 to $80 a week.
As a youngster Hank stayed out of trouble because he was constantly playing baseball. Baseball equipment was not easy to get so he practiced in his yard with a ball of tightly wound rags. When he finally got a hold of a rubber ball, he used one of his mother's broomsticks to smack it against the side of the house.
When Hank was growing up in the 1930's, the schools were racially segregated so Henry, who was an African-American, went to an all-black grammar school. After grammar school he went to Mobile's Central High School. They didn't have a baseball team so he joined the fast-pitch softball team. During his spare time, he played baseball for a local sandlot team.
Hank's boyhood hero was Jackie Robinson. By this time in high school, Hank knew he wanted to be a baseball player. Then one day during a league softball game, the talented teenager was approached by Ed Scott, who was a scout for the Mobile Black Bears. Hank began to play with the Bears for $10 a game until he turned 18 and then he signed with the Indianapolis Clowns to play for $200 per month. Indianapolis played 8-10 games a week which was tiring, but it paid off when a scout for the Braves, Dewey Griggs came to talk to Hank about moving up the big leagues.
