21. Duke

http://www.hawaiifive0.org/Cast Members/duke.htm
Hawaii Five-0 Fan Club Duke Lukela We first meet Edward D. "Duke" Lukela as a uniformed HPD sergeant. He works with Five-O a number of times before being assigned in 1972 to help Five-O full-time. He continues in this capacity for three years. Then, when Ben Kokua leaves the squad, Duke is promoted to plainclothes detective and becomes a full-fledged member of the Five-O squad. He continues to work for Five-O for the rest of McGarrett’s tenure as head of the agency. McGarrett seems fond of Duke and treats him in a more affectionate manner than some of the other members of the squad. Duke has a well-developed network of street sources and informers and is somewhat protective towards the prostitutes who give him information. He is also a sharpshooter and a martial arts expert. Duke was born June 19, 1926 to a family of "old missionary stock." His family is religious and strict, and Duke is forced to be secretive when helping his niece Gladys when she becomes pregnant out-of-wedlock. Raised in this environment, Duke seems to be ambivalent about the "old ways." He sometimes observes Hawaiian tradition and other times seems to have a wistful feeling that it should be "left in the past." As a young man, he was an Eagle Scout, served in the Navy or Naval Reserves where he learned about explosives, and acquired two degrees from Stanford University. He carries Badge #260. He is 5'10", weighs 175 pounds and has blood type A, Rh negative. He likes Hawaiian music, knows how to play the harmonica, and denies any knowledge of the ukulele.

Early in 1998, This is True author Randy Cassingham was distressed to see that not only had actor Jack Lord died, but that his death was virtually ignored in the mainstream media. Wanting to honor him somehow in his online column, Randy came up with the idea of an "honorary unsubscribe" symbolically deleting Lord from the This is True online distribution list. (Randy had no way of knowing if Lord actually was a subscriber, since it's virtually impossible to positively identify someone by their e-mail address alone.) Reaction was immediate: True 's readers loved the honor, so now someone is honored almost every week in This is True 's online mailing. Obituaries are pretty much a lost art in America, and most people ignore them. Why? Because few can relate to the usually poorly-written paragraph that tries to sum up a person's life. When Randy writes an "honorary unsubscription" notice, he makes it interesting as few writers can. When he skips a week here and there, readers complain that they miss reading about someone who made a difference in the world. (Randy notes that he cannot always include an honorary unsubscribe because sometimes he doesn't hear about a death that meets the criteria [more on that below], or because he doesn't always have time to research and write it the main part of

I knocked Michael Anderson, Jr. unconscious, stuffed him behind the wheel of his van, and sent it flaming down the slopes of the Pali. I fenced hot opals, laundered syndicate money, and was hired twice by rival actors to kill Jack Lord - once as he was jogging in Kapiolani Park. Unfortunately that caper was unsuccessful, because I was shot in the head by a sniper hidden in the Rose Garden across the street. It was a classic double cross, sweetheart. Over the past ten years I have been pistol-whipped twice, strangled twice, shot four times, and booked by "Danno" annually. That’s right, baby, I’m a character player on Hawaii Five-0 Normally I am disguised as a meek, middle-aged staff specialist for the Hawaii State Department of Education, but with a single call from my agent, I take vacation time, break out my hardware (I prefer a .44 caliber magnum - like Dirty Harry), and start working on the latest contract.

No top-ranked teams were beaten in 1945. 1945 Recap The war was over by autumn, but Army kept up its football offensive with a second straight unbeaten season. Each time the Cadets snapped the ball in 1945 they gained eight yards. The average score of their nine wins slipped a bit to 46–5, but again they treated Notre Dame harshly. Facing the No.2 Irish at Yankee Stadium on Nov.9, Army crushed them, 48–0. A thousand miles from West Point, the talent pool wasn't quite so predictable. The war effort had wiped out Alabama's roster in 1943 and forced coach Frank Thomas to cancel the season. A year later, the Crimson Tide returned to go 5–1–2 and reach the Sugar Bowl. In '45, with sophomore Harry Gilmer at quarterback, they beat everyone they played, including Southern Cal by 20 points in the Rose Bowl. The loss was USC's first in the Rose Bowl after eight wins. The Cotton Bowl, however, belonged to Texas' sophomore quarterback Bobby Layne. Layne ran for four touchdowns, passed for two others and kicked four extra points as the No.10 Longhorns showed Missouri, 40–27.

During the 1940’s, Babe Nomura played for San Jose State. For most Nissei (second generation Japanese Americans) student athletes, the internment of Japanese Americans into concentration camps during WW2 ended or delayed their participation in sports. Conkling and Francis Wai both played for UCLA during the late 1930’s and 1940s’ Abe Dung played for Santa Clara University during the 1940s. One of the early professional pioneers was a halfback named Walter Aichieu who played for the Dayton Triangles during the 1920’s. Wally Yonemine played halfback and kick returner for the early San Francisco Forty Niners in the late 1940’s. Yonemine later played and coached professional baseball in Japan during the 1950’s. Football was a different game in those days since players went on both offense, defense and special teams. Helmets were made of leather and had no face masks. Broken noses and knocked out teeth were common. In the 1970’s-1980’s quite a few Asians and Asian Pacific Islanders played football in college and in the pros. Many were of Samoan and Hawaiian decent. Some of the most notable were Mosi Tatupu FB USC and New England Patriots (one time NFL rushing leader), Manu Tuiasosopu DT (Super Bowl SF49ers vs Miami) John Lee UCLA PAC 10 scoring leader (kicker), Micah Matsuzaki WR BYU (caught 4TD’s in one game) Jesse Sapolu offensive linemen for Hawaii and Super Bowl Champion SF 49ers. One of the most notable coaches is Norm Chow offensive coach for BYU. Coach Chow was a key architect of the famous “West Coast Offence” at BYU.
