The class of 34 A final farewell to Walter Payton By Jim Klobuchar
NFL Insider Magazine

Walter Payton rushed for an all-time best 16,726 yards. Pro football is big and boisterous and sometimes brutal. It also is glamorous and rich and often heroic. And there are times when it is so big and visible it is simply engulfing. Pro football has earned all of those characterizations and more. One thing it rarely is called is beautiful. The game is about spectacle and the clash of powerful and driven men colliding with other powerful and driven men. But there are exceptions. What happened in the hours following the death of Walter Payton though, transcended everything. The hours after Walter Payton died created for professional football players, coaches, and its followers a solidarity of grief and affection that seemed to wash away every conflict that divided them. It was an unforgettable moment. Yes, he was a marvelous football player and a human being of decency and honor with streaks of intramural mischief. He was called all of that and more when he played and when he retired. But in the hours after he died November 1, Walter Payton did for football what his athletic skills and all of his records could not have done, what perhaps no other football player could have done. In remembering who and what Payton was, pro football came together in a way that was spontaneous, passionate, and real. It cut across the whole range of the game's diversity. It brought together the men who had played with and against him, the coaches, younger players who knew him only through video flashbacks, and fans who only knew of his legend.

Widow of Football Great Launches Walter Payton Cancer Fund
By Dave Cureton, cancerpage.com In his 13-year career in the National Football League, Walter Payton carried a football more times for more total yards than anyone else in NFL history. When he was diagnosed in the fall of 1997 with a rare liver disease of the bile duct (primary sclerosing cholangitis, or PSC), the legendary Chicago Bears running back likened it to a penalty flag on the field, his widow Connie Payton recalled. But this penalty was far more than 15 yards. The following spring, cancerous tumors were discovered in the bile duct. In May of 1999, exploratory surgery found the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes. Payton was no longer a candidate for a liver transplant, he was told, because the anti-rejection drugs he would have to take to help his body accept the new organ would speed the spread of the cancer. oncology Walter Payton died November 1, 1999. He was 45. The fund is under the auspices of the non-profit Cancer Treatment Research Foundation, which says it is able to put 99 cents of every donated dollar directly toward cancer research programs because its daily operating expenses are underwritten by CTCA. The fund asks contributors to consider commemorating Payton by keying the amount of their donations to his Chicago Bears jersey number, 34.

    http://www.payton34.org/bio.cfm
Walter Payton Biography Walter Payton, NFL Hall of Fame football player, was born in Columbia, Mississippi, the son of Peter Payton, a factory worker, and Alyne Payton. Walter, or "Spider Man" as he called himself as a boy, was active in Boy Scouts, the church choir, camping with friends, and playing drums in the band before he finally turned to football his junior year in high school at the all-black Jefferson High School. Already bigger and stronger than most of his teammates, Walter was an instant starter. Halfway through his junior year at Jefferson, the all-white Columbia High School was ordered to integrate, and Payton and several of his teammates transferred there. They were upset, however, when a white coach, Tommy Davis, was hired for the Columbia job instead of their Jefferson coach, Charles Boston. Already socially conscious at the age of sixteen, Payton boycotted spring practice that year to express his dissatisfaction, but, recognizing that the decision would not change, he joined the team for the start of his senior season. Payton led his Columbia team to an 8-2 record that year and was named All State. But with just one year at the school and two years of high school football, he was not heavily recruited. He attended nearby Jackson State University, where he joined a team that featured a number of other future NFL players and Pro Bowlers, including Jerome Barkham, Vernon Perry, Ricky Young, Robert Brazille, and fellow Hall of Famer Jackie Slater. At Jackson State, Payton rushed for 3,563 yards, achieving a 6.1 average per rushing attempt, and became the NCAA's all-time leading rusher with 65 touchdowns. He majored in communications and graduated in 1975.

As a special fund of Cancer Treatment Research Foundation *, the Walter Payton Cancer Fund sponsors the world's most innovative and promising clinical research in complementary medicine and integrative oncology. Connie Payton has said that the Walter Payton Cancer Fund "will facilitate cutting edge cancer research with the same grit and determination that Walter showed on the football field. Watching Walter run the football was like watching a colt prancing through a meadow just for the sheer exuberance of running. Our family created the Walter Payton Cancer Fund to bring new exuberance to the quest for a cure for cancer." Walter lived his life and fought his disease with passion, idealism, and determination. His family now urges fans to continue fighting cancer in Walter's honor. The Walter Payton Cancer Fund provides a unique opportunity for fans to honor the memory of a national sports hero and change the face of cancer.
