10 Questions with Jim Kelly

Quarterback Jim Kelly led the Buffalo Bills to an unprecedented four consecutive Super Bowl appearances in the 1990's. Kelly was a prep standout at East Brady (PA) High School where he won all-state honors after passing for 3,915 yards and 44 TD's in his career. But Jim starred on defense of his East Brady team and was even heavily recruited as a LB by Penn State's Joe Paterno . From there Jim went to the University of Miami to quarterback the Hurricanes. He was inducted to the University of Miami Hall of Fame in 1992. Kelly was drafted into the NFL in 1983, in the first round along with John Elway and Dan Marino , but chose to go to the the USFL , where he threw 83 touchdown passes in two seasons with the Houston Gamblers before joining the Buffalo Bills of the NFL in 1986. In 11 NFL seasons, he completed 60 percent of his passes for 35,467 yards and 237 TDs. His career passing rating of 84.4 is the sixth highest in NFL history, and he's one of only five quarterbacks in NFL history to throw for at least 3,000 yards in eight seasons, with a 101-59 regular season record and 9-8 postpostseason record as a starter. He has appeared on General Hospital The Late Show with David Letterman NBC Nightly News The Rosie O'Donnell Show The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Oprah Winfrey Arsenio Hall , and even had a part in the film Necessary Roughness Jim came to Long Beach, California, to race in the

S
eldom in the world of professional sports does the arrival of a single player significantly alter the fortunes of an entire team. However, the August 1986 signing of quarterback Jim Kelly was clearly the catalyst for the resurrection of a Bills franchise which hit the depths of despair with consecutive 2-14 seasons in 1984 and 1985. Kelly came to Buffalo with not only a strong right arm, but the heart and desire of a champion, and his leadership and inspiration brought the Bills first respectability... and soon after preeminence. The former Miami University and USFL Houston Gamblers star owns virtually every significant Bills passing record, including passing yards for a season (3,844 in 1991) and career and touchdown passes for a season (33 in 1991) and career. Over his career, Kelly completed 2,874 of 4,780 passes for 35,467 yards and 237 touchdowns. Among all National Football League quarterbacks who have ever played the game, Kelly is eighth in completions, tenth in yardage and fifth in completion percentage. The Bills regular season record with Kelly at the controls was a sparkling 101-59 (.631). Kelly's Buffalo career, and his legacy, cannot be appreciated with reference to personal statistics, however. Above all, he will be remembered as the spark behind eight playoff appearances in nine years by the Bills (1988-1996), six American Football Conference East Division titles, and an unprecedented four consecutive Super Bowl appearances. Given the current state of the free-agency ridden, high-turnover NFL, the last record may be safe for all time.

What Ever Happened to Jim Kelly?
Enter the Dragon Star Resurfaces in Black Belt Exclusive
Interview by David W. Clary
Jim Kelly (far right) and former world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali (far left) nearly squared off in a boxing-versus-karate match in the 1970s.
Born in Paris, Kentucky, Jim Kelly (not to be confused with the Buffalo Bills football player of the same name) grew up with uncanny athletic ability. He ran track and played football and basketball in junior high and high school, was voted the most inspirational junior high athlete in San Diego, and had a chance to become a professional football player. He first found interest in karate after leaving the University of Louisville as a freshman and moving to Lexington, where he began studying the martial arts under shorin-ryu karate instructor Parker Sheldon.
Kelly rocketed to fame in the martial arts community after an impressive showing at Ed Parker's 1971 Internationals, and he appeared as one of Bruce Lee's co-stars in the legendary film, Enter the Dragon. Since then, Kelly has faded out of the martial arts limelight as his interests have broadened. In 1975, he turned to tennis and became a professional player, rising to number two in California in the senior men's doubles rankings and reaching the top ten in the state in senior men's singles. Following a short stint in 1990 as a boxer, Kelly is currently working with the Gracie brothers, studying their unique form of jujitsu, while teaching both tennis and martial arts across the United States and overseas.
